CHAPTER 18, Into the Heart of Darkness
The night had grown heavier than before.
It was no longer just darkness covering the sky—
it had seeped into the land itself.
The air felt thick, almost suffocating, as if something unseen was pressing down on everything that lived and breathed. The mountain ahead stood like a silent giant, its surface cracked and dark, pulsing faintly with an eerie energy.
Jay walked ahead, his steps calm and measured, while Elara followed closely behind, supporting the unconscious girl. The faint glow from Elara's magic barely pushed back the darkness surrounding them.
"She's stable… for now," Elara said quietly, adjusting her grip on the girl.
Jay didn't turn back. His eyes were fixed forward.
"For now isn't enough."
His voice was cold, firm—unchanging.
---
As they moved closer to the mountain, the environment began to change.
The ground beneath their feet turned black, as if burned long ago.
There were no trees.
No insects.
No sound.
Even the wind had stopped.
Elara suddenly slowed down, pressing her hand against her chest.
"…This place… it feels wrong," she whispered.
Jay stopped.
For a moment, everything stood still.
Then he spoke quietly—
"We're not alone anymore."
---
A low tremor ran through the ground.
Then—
a voice.
Deep.
Ancient.
It didn't come from a single direction—it echoed from everywhere.
"…You came."
Elara instantly stepped forward, alert.
"Who's there?! Show yourself!"
---
Silence.
Then—
a crack of dark light split open across the mountain's surface.
From within that crack, black energy began to leak out… slowly forming a shape.
A figure.
Tall.
Distorted.
Its body seemed unstable, like smoke trying to hold a human form.
It had no clear face.
No visible eyes.
And yet—
it was staring directly at Jay.
---
Jay's gaze sharpened.
"…The Core."
The figure let out a faint, distorted laugh.
"So… you understand."
---
Elara stepped closer to Jay and whispered,
"This… this isn't just a fragment…"
Jay replied without hesitation,
"No. It's something more."
---
The figure turned slightly—
toward the girl.
"…My vessel."
Elara immediately stepped in front of her.
"She doesn't belong to you anymore."
The figure laughed again, louder this time.
"You… cannot stop what has already begun."
---
Suddenly—
the ground shattered.
Cracks spread rapidly beneath them, glowing with dark energy.
From those cracks—
creatures began to emerge.
But these were not the same as before.
These were larger.
More solid.
More terrifying.
Their forms were twisted, muscular, almost armored in darkness.
Elara's eyes widened.
"Jay… these aren't like the others—"
"Elite forms," Jay said calmly.
---
One of the creatures roared and charged forward.
Elara raised her hand instantly.
"Arcane Barrier!"
A shimmering shield formed in front of them—
but—
BOOM!
The creature smashed through it with brute force.
---
Jay stepped forward.
"Stay back."
The creature swung its massive arm—
but—
FLASH.
Jay vanished.
In the next instant—
he appeared above it.
His blade came down with precision.
CRASH.
The creature collapsed.
---
Another one attacked from behind.
Jay sensed it—
but he didn't turn.
Instead—
he activated something deeper.
Something older.
Hiddenness.
His presence disappeared.
Completely.
The creature froze mid-attack.
Confused.
It could no longer feel him.
---
Then—
FLASH.
Jay reappeared behind it.
One clean strike—
and it fell.
---
But more were coming.
Three…
Four…
Even more emerging from the ground.
---
Elara struggled to hold them back with magic.
"They keep coming!"
Jay's eyes shifted toward the figure.
Each time the creatures fell—
new ones formed.
"…The source is him."
---
Without wasting another second—
Jay vanished.
This time—
he appeared directly in front of the figure.
---
The figure tilted its head.
"You chose to face me directly."
Jay said nothing.
He attacked instantly—
his blade slicing through—
but…
it passed through.
Like cutting smoke.
---
"I am not bound by form," the voice echoed.
---
Suddenly—
a force struck from behind.
Jay teleported away instantly—
but the attack followed him.
As if it was connected.
Tracking him.
---
For the first time—
Jay frowned slightly.
"…This is different."
---
The figure spoke again—
"I am not just a fragment…"
"I am awareness…"
"I am spreading…"
---
Elara's voice broke through—
"Jay! The girl—!"
---
Jay turned instantly.
The girl's body had begun to rise.
Her eyes—
turning black again.
---
"The connection is reactivating…"
Jay understood immediately.
If it continued—
she would be lost again.
---
He exhaled slowly.
Then—
for the first time—
he used both abilities together.
Teleportation… and Hiddenness.
---
He vanished.
Not just from sight—
but from existence itself.
No presence.
No trace.
---
Even the figure paused.
"…Where did he go?"
---
Suddenly—
multiple versions of Jay appeared across the battlefield.
Afterimages.
Teleportation illusions.
---
The figure hesitated.
For the first time—
confused.
---
And in that single moment—
the real Jay appeared beside the girl.
---
He grabbed her wrist firmly.
"Enough."
His voice was quiet—
but carried absolute authority.
---
Then—
he released his energy into her.
Everything he had.
The system activated—
📜 SYSTEM OVERRIDE INITIATED
---
A burst of light exploded outward.
The dark energy around her trembled violently.
The figure screamed—
"NO—!"
---
The girl's body shook—
then went still.
The black veins faded.
Her breathing normalized.
---
The connection broke.
---
The figure staggered backward.
Its form flickering.
"Weak… impossible…"
---
Jay stood up slowly.
His eyes were cold again.
"What you started… ends here."
---
But—
the figure didn't disappear completely.
Its body began to dissolve into dark smoke.
Retreating.
Escaping.
---
"This… is not over…"
And then—
it was gone.
---
Silence returned.
Heavy.
Unnatural.
---
Elara walked toward Jay, still catching her breath.
"That wasn't the end… was it?"
Jay shook his head slightly.
"No."
"…That was the beginning."
---
He lifted the girl carefully.
She looked peaceful now.
As if nothing had happened.
---
But deep within the mountain—
something stirred.
Something bigger.
Stronger.
Waiting.
---
Jay looked toward the mountain's core.
His eyes held only one thing now—
war.
---
"We're going inside."
---
Elara hesitated.
"…Are you ready for what's in there?"
---
Jay answered without a pause—
"I already am."
---
And without looking back—
they stepped forward.
Into the heart of darkness.
Where the next battle…
was already waiting. 🔥⚔️
