Chapter 29 - Chapter 29- The Alpha's Choice

Chapter 29 — The Alpha's Choice

The pack house was too quiet.

Not peaceful.

Watching.

Hazel stood near the large window of the room they had given her. It wasn't a guest room.

It was central.

Strategic.

Like a statement.

She turned when she felt him.

Ryan didn't knock.

He entered like he owned the air.

Which, in this territory, he did.

"You're unsettled," he said calmly.

Hazel crossed her arms. "Your pack doesn't like me."

"They don't understand you."

"That's not the same thing."

Ryan stepped closer, slow and deliberate.

"They don't need to like you."

Her jaw tightened. "That's comforting."

His gaze dropped briefly to her wrist.

The mark pulsed faintly beneath the fabric.

"They need to accept you," he corrected.

Before she could respond, a sharp knock hit the door.

Not hesitant.

Demanding.

Liam entered first.

Behind him came five others.

The strongest wolves of the pack.

The Council.

Hazel felt the shift immediately.

This wasn't social.

This was official.

Ryan didn't turn.

"Speak."

The female wolf from the clearing stepped forward. Her name was Sera — Hazel learned quickly.

"You brought a marked supernatural heir into our territory without council consent," Sera said firmly.

Ryan's tone remained neutral. "I don't require consent."

"You risk war."

"I invited it."

Silence crackled.

Hazel's pulse jumped.

Invited it?

Liam stepped in carefully. "Alpha, hunters crossed the outer border. Twice."

Ryan's eyes sharpened slightly.

"And they died."

"That isn't the issue," Sera pushed. "The issue is why they're coming."

All eyes turned to Hazel.

She felt it.

The weight.

The judgment.

"You think I asked for this?" she said quietly.

Sera didn't flinch. "Power attracts predators."

Hazel took a step forward.

"And weak leadership attracts challenges."

The room went deadly still.

Even Liam stiffened.

Ryan's gaze shifted slowly toward Hazel.

Not anger.

Interest.

Sera's eyes flashed.

"Careful, human."

Hazel's mark flared faintly.

"I'm not human," she replied evenly.

The air pressure changed.

Subtle.

But real.

Several wolves inhaled sharply.

They felt it.

Ralph stirred inside Ryan.

Venom smiled darkly.

Blade observed in silence.

Ryan finally spoke.

"She stays."

Not loud.

Not shouted.

Absolute.

Sera's jaw tightened. "And when the Devourer comes?"

That name again.

Hazel's stomach dropped slightly.

Ryan didn't look away from Sera.

"Then he will learn what happens when something hunts what is mine."

The possessiveness in his tone wasn't romantic.

It was territorial.

Primal.

Hazel felt heat rise to her face despite herself.

Sera noticed.

Of course she did.

"This is no longer about protection," Sera said coldly. "This is about claiming."

Hazel's breath caught.

Ryan's expression didn't change.

But something in his eyes deepened.

"Careful," he warned softly.

Sera held his gaze.

"If you formally claim her without council approval, you divide the pack."

There it was.

The real threat.

Not hunters.

Not prophecy.

Internal fracture.

Ryan stepped forward slightly.

Power rolled off him in controlled waves.

Not enough to force submission.

Enough to remind them.

"You question my authority?"

Liam lowered his head immediately.

Sera held on two seconds longer.

Then bowed.

But her voice was still sharp.

"We question the timing."

Fair.

Ryan considered that.

Then his eyes shifted to Hazel again.

She stood tall.

Unbowed.

Unapologetic.

The mark pulsed once.

As if answering the tension.

Ryan made a decision.

"You want stability?" he said quietly to the council.

"Then you'll have it."

He turned fully toward Hazel.

And this time, when he stepped close, he did touch her.

Just her wrist.

Right over the mark.

The contact sent a visible ripple of energy through the room.

Gasps filled the space.

Not pain.

Resonance.

Hazel's breath hitched.

The mark glowed brighter.

Not rejecting him.

Responding.

Ryan's voice dropped.

"I will not claim her tonight."

The council visibly relaxed — slightly.

"But when I do…"

His thumb pressed gently against her pulse.

"It will not be up for debate."

The warning was clear.

This wasn't negotiation.

It was inevitability.

Sera stepped back.

"For now, she remains under protection," she said.

Ryan nodded once.

The council began to file out.

But before Sera exited, she looked directly at Hazel.

"If you bring war to our doorstep," she said quietly,

"You fight beside us."

Hazel didn't hesitate.

"I wouldn't do anything else."

Sera left.

The door closed.

Silence settled.

Ryan's hand was still around her wrist.

Heat lingered where he touched her.

Hazel looked up at him slowly.

"You enjoy this," she said.

"Enjoy what?"

"Control."

His expression turned faintly amused.

"You mistake control for preparation."

She tried to pull her wrist back.

He didn't release immediately.

Just long enough to make the moment heavier.

"You're not ready for what's coming," he said quietly.

Her voice softened.

"Then teach me."

That wasn't defiance.

That was acceptance.

Ryan studied her carefully.

Venom stirred with interest.

Blade approved.

Ralph remained watchful.

Finally, he released her.

"Tomorrow," he said.

"Training begins."

Outside, the wind howled through the trees.

And far beyond pack borders—

Silver eyes watched the pack house.

Unblinking.

Patient.
