Chapter 28 - Chapter 28- Crossing the territory

Chapter 28 — Crossing the Territory

The bodies were already gone.

Ryan's men worked efficiently. Silent. Loyal.

By the time Hazel stepped out of the apartment building, it looked like nothing had happened.

But she could still smell it.

Blood.

Metal.

Power.

Ryan stood beside a black SUV, waiting.

Not rushing her.

Not explaining.

Just waiting.

Annabelle was already inside.

Klara arrived minutes later, pale, shaken.

She had felt it too.

The attack.

Her eyes flicked nervously between Hazel and Ryan.

Something had changed.

Hazel wasn't just Hazel anymore.

Ryan opened the passenger door for her.

Not gently.

Not aggressively.

Just… decisively.

"You can't stay here," he said.

Hazel lifted her chin. "You don't get to decide that."

His eyes darkened slightly.

"I already did."

Venom stirred.

Ralph remained steady.

Blade watched quietly.

Hazel hesitated.

Then she got in.

Not because she surrendered.

But because she knew he was right.

The city lights slowly faded behind them.

Buildings turned to open roads.

Open roads turned to forest.

The deeper they drove, the quieter the world became.

Hazel felt it before she saw it.

A boundary.

A line.

Her mark pulsed faintly as they crossed it.

Ryan glanced at her wrist.

"She recognizes territory."

Hazel looked at him sharply. "Recognizes?"

"You're stepping into Alpha land."

The forest grew thicker.

Older.

The air felt different here.

Alive.

Watching.

The car finally stopped near a clearing.

Hazel stepped out.

The moon hung high above, casting silver across the trees.

And then she saw them.

Figures stepping out from the shadows.

Wolves.

Not shifted.

Human.

But unmistakably wolf.

Dozens of them.

Eyes glowing faintly in the dark.

Assessing her.

Judging.

Whispers spread quickly.

"That's her?" "She looks human." "She killed a Hunter?" "Alpha brought her?"

Hazel stood still.

She refused to shrink.

Ryan stepped forward beside her.

Not touching.

But close enough that every wolf felt the message.

Mine to protect.

Not yours to question.

Liam moved forward first.

Beta presence strong.

He bowed his head slightly to Ryan.

But his eyes studied Hazel carefully.

"She's not stable yet," Liam murmured quietly.

"I know," Ryan replied.

A female wolf stepped forward next.

Sharp gaze. Dominant aura.

"And we're supposed to accept this?" she challenged.

Ryan didn't even look at her.

"Yes."

Simple.

Cold.

Absolute.

Hazel felt the tension ripple through the clearing.

This wasn't just about protection.

This was political.

If Ryan housed her here, he was declaring something.

Claiming something.

And the pack felt it.

The female wolf's eyes narrowed.

"She brings hunters to our border."

Ryan finally turned toward her.

The air shifted instantly.

Ralph surfaced just enough.

Not wild.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

"They crossed into my territory," Ryan said quietly.

"And they died."

Silence fell.

Hazel felt it then.

The weight of who he was here.

Not businessman.

Not negotiator.

Alpha.

Tribrid.

Untouchable.

She turned slowly, taking in the forest, the wolves, the power structure she had just stepped into.

Her mark pulsed again.

Stronger this time.

Several wolves stiffened.

They felt it.

Even if they didn't understand it.

Ryan stepped slightly closer.

Low enough that only she could hear:

"This is temporary."

Hazel didn't look at him.

"Is it?"

His jaw tightened slightly.

Because he wasn't sure anymore.

Liam gestured toward a large house beyond the clearing.

"Your quarters are prepared."

Hazel arched a brow. "Already?"

Ryan's voice was smooth.

"I don't leave things to chance."

Of course he didn't.

As she walked toward the pack house, wolves parted for her.

Some curious.

Some resentful.

Some afraid.

Hazel felt it all.

And instead of shrinking—

She lifted her chin higher.

Behind her, Ryan watched closely.

Venom murmured low.

She walks like a queen.

Blade observed.

They feel it too.

Ralph remained calm.

The pack senses strength.

As Hazel stepped onto the wooden porch, the wind picked up suddenly.

Her hair lifted slightly.

The mark on her wrist glowed beneath her sleeve.

And every wolf in that clearing felt it at the same time.

Not dominance.

Not submission.

Something older.

A presence.

Ryan's eyes darkened.

This was going to be harder than he thought.

Because bringing her here wasn't just protection.

It was the beginning of a shift in hierarchy.

Hazel stepped inside the pack house.

And the door closed behind her.

Outside, Liam looked at Ryan carefully.

"You just changed everything."

Ryan's gaze remained fixed on the door.

"I know."

And deep in the forest—

Something watched from beyond pack borders.

Smiling.
