Suddenly, I felt immense pity for Alpha Gareth. If what Lucas and Theresa told me was true, then Alpha Gareth literally needed his life to be miserable if he wanted to maintain control over his wolf. Even something as simple as being happy that a battle was over could cause him to lose control and hurt his allies.
"Why was he cursed?" I asked. Did Alpha Gareth piss off a particularly malevolent witch?
"That is a question our Alpha should answer himself. We've already told you too much," Lucas said apologetically. "All I can say is that the curse was not of any fault of his own. He had it the moment he was born."
I sucked in a breath. How could anyone spend their entire life like this, purposely avoiding joy?
If I had to purposely make myself feel unhappy to ensure I didn't end up killing my friends and family, I didn't know if I could make it to a year.
"Is there a way to break the curse?" I asked.
