[IRIS POV]
My peaceful morning was broken up by the sound of raised voices outside the tent. Martin's mother was especially effusive with her apologies while she began to prepare breakfast.
"I'm so sorry, we completely missed you," she said, sounding wretched. "I don't know why, all of us were so tired last night that we slept so soundly until morning."
"All of you fell asleep at the same time?" I heard Caius ask, his voice curious and probing. "Even Iris?"
"I think so," Marissa said hesitantly. "I saw her enter her tent to rest, before my husband and I turned in for the night."
"Was no one keeping watch?" Caius's tone was pleasant, but one would have to be a fool to miss the exasperation in his voice. "Please tell me at least Martin was awake and on duty then."
There was a pregnant pause, and I heard the shameful shuffling of feet, before Martin's groggy voice answered. "I… I think I was keeping watch. But then I fell asleep too."
