BWDC:SDDK Chapter 111: Kaito Kid is Motionless
Conan, Mouri Kogoro, and Mouri Ran were all unable to make it to the scene.
This was actually a good thing. At the very least, Ren Ichimonji didn't have to worry about how Conan's super-powered soccer ball might interfere with his plans like before.
However, thinking back to the hypothesis from this morning, Ren felt an inexplicable urge to laugh. He felt that as long as Conan went to school, some sort of malicious incident was bound to happen there. If not at school, it would surely occur after he was dismissed. Looking at it now, that seemed to be exactly the case. It was simply absurd.
Should he say it's truly the underlying logic of "Kei-science"?
"Still, it's a bit strange that no public security mission was triggered," Ren wondered to himself.
Teitan Elementary was within the jurisdiction of Beika Town. If a malicious incident had occurred, especially after Conan explicitly mentioned characters related to the case, the system should have issued a mission by now, no matter how slow its reaction time. Since it hadn't, did that mean whatever was happening at Teitan Elementary wasn't a "malicious" incident?
Was it just a common occurrence like petty theft?
Come to think of it, homicides in Beika Town seemed to outnumber thefts by several times over...
"What are you thinking about?"
Suzuki Sonoko's small head suddenly popped up from beside him. She held her hands behind her back, leaning in curiously to look at Ren.
"Thinking about me?"
Ren Ichimonji: ?
It was strange. Sonoko was also a character from the Conan cast. Why was it that Mouri Kogoro and the others were tied up with business and couldn't come, yet Sonoko appeared here at the Suzuki Financial Group's exhibition hall?
Was it because she was the chief chairperson of the Beika Town Kaito Kid Survival Fan Club? But this wasn't the Hanzawa the Criminal spin-off, was it?
Despite his surprise, Ren didn't let it show on his face. He simply smiled and replied, "I was wondering in what form Kaito Kid will appear at the scene later."
Hearing this, Sonoko asked with a hint of confusion, "In what form will he appear?"
"I remember you said before that you saw Kaito Kid's true face—that he looks exactly like Kudo. Now, someone who is believed to be Kaito Kid and looks exactly like Kudo has indeed appeared. Yet, you doubt he's the real one and think the real Kid is someone else?"
At this point, Sonoko suddenly leaned closer. She narrowed her eyes and asked suspiciously, "You're not teasing me with this too, are you?"
You can't tease a fool like this, and she certainly wasn't a fool.
Facing her scrutiny, Ren merely smiled and replied, "I'm not teasing you. I've always spoken the truth."
It's just that I've made other preparations to make these truths look less than true.
To this, Sonoko nodded half-doubtingly. She leaned against the railing with Ren, watching the situation below.
Currently, Saguru Hakuba and Kuroba Kaito were handcuffed together.
If Kuroba Kaito was indeed Kaito Kid, then he clearly had no opportunity to commit the crime.
Meanwhile, Great Uncle Jirokichi Suzuki was beside the gemstone, looking over his speech notes. This was the speech he had prepared for his victory over Kaito Kid. Usually, after achieving a feat difficult for ordinary people, he would hold a press conference to brag. With so many reporters outside now, he could even skip the trouble of organizing a formal conference.
Likely, Jirokichi was planning to walk straight out and address the media the moment the time was up.
"May 28th, 7:58:23 PM."
"Kaito Kid has one minute left before his true identity is exposed in front of everyone. Tell me, Mr. Kuroba, do you have any other thoughts on this?"
Saguru Hakuba used his free hand to pull out his pocket watch for a glance. He then shot an exceptionally confident look at Kuroba Kaito and asked, "If you have anything else to say, say it now. Otherwise, you'll only be able to say it in a holding cell."
Hakuba, you jerk! Every word you say is more irritating than the last!
Kuroba Kaito twitched the corner of his mouth, grumbling internally. However, on the surface, he maintained his "poker face," showing no cracks in his expression. He simply started a silent countdown based on the time Hakuba had just announced.
Five, four, three, two, one.
Hakuba's pocket watch completed a rotation, hitting exactly eight o'clock. He looked up at Kuroba Kaito and said confidently, "I win, Kaito Kid."
Kuroba Kaito, however, shook his head, sighed, and said, "Then why don't you look above you?"
Above me?
Hakuba froze. The next moment, shocked voices erupted from the crowd in the hall.
"It's—it's Kaito Kid!" "Kaito Kid appeared out of thin air!"
Startled, Hakuba looked up toward the top of the Pink Sapphire. A figure had appeared. White cape, white silk hat, white suit, and a monocle. Without a doubt, the person appearing now was Kaito Kid!
But if the one atop the Pink Sapphire was Kaito Kid, then who was Kuroba Kaito? Hakuba found it difficult to process an answer.
Meanwhile, Inspector Nakamori Ginzo waved his hand and shouted, "The despicable Kaito Kid has appeared! Everyone, join me in the hunt! Cowards need not apply!"
However, the figure of Kaito Kid laughed and declared, "Hahahaha! This gemstone, I, Kaito Kid, shall take it!"
He reached out, intending to grab the top of the Pink Sapphire and carry it away. Yet, the moment he touched the surface of the gem, the nearby traps were instantly triggered. Shackles immediately snapped onto Kaito Kid's body and limbs, locking tight.
Seeing this, Jirokichi Suzuki pumped his fist. Excellent, the trap worked!
But it wasn't over. A white curtain on the ceiling suddenly pulled back, and a massive capture net fell from the sky, shrouding both Kaito Kid and the Pink Sapphire.
Hakuba's eyes lit up. His trap had also been triggered. Regardless of who this "other" Kaito Kid appearing for the real one was, as long as they were hit by multiple traps simultaneously, there was absolutely no possibility of escaping the scene!
Kaito Kid remained motionless!
"Ah! Kaito Kid's been caught!" Sonoko exclaimed from the second floor. She hadn't expected such a formidable phantom thief to fail so easily.
However, Ren Ichimonji shook his head.
Kaito Kid being motionless wasn't because he had given up. It was because Koizumi Akako was currently chanting an incantation. Clearly, the Red Witch didn't have the "mobile casting" perk.
But for now... this was enough.
A powerful gale suddenly howled through the exhibition hall!
