Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: Let Bats Defend Against Bats

The conference room of Osborn Group had been designed with secrecy in mind.

To prevent information leaks, its walls were layered with reinforced concrete, thick plasterboard, and multiple sheets of sound-insulating felt. While this structure wasn't as solid as a single block of pure concrete, it was still far beyond what ordinary people—or even standard gunfire—could damage.

And yet—

Under a single, brutal punch from Batman, Kingpin's massive body smashed straight through the wall.

The impact carried him into the neighboring conference room, where his body continued flying, finally slamming into another reinforced concrete wall. The collision collapsed more than half of it before Kingpin's enormous frame finally stopped.

The shockwave shattered the windows.

Glass rained across the floor like broken ice.

For a moment, everything went silent.

Silver Sable stood frozen, her hands slackening as the chair she had been holding dropped to the ground with a dull thud.

She stared at the destroyed wall, then slowly turned her gaze back to Batman.

When she had first encountered him in the underground human experimentation lab on the second basement level, Batman had only worn a simple black stealth suit. Back then, he had taken down her security personnel one by one—fifty against one.

Even then, Silver Sable had believed she could still fight him if necessary.

Now?

Watching Kingpin being launched like a cannonball erased that illusion completely.

Silver Sable swallowed.

Her earlier judgment shattered.

This thing isn't human, she thought.

That exposed chin… it's just misdirection.

Her imagination spiraled.

A vampire? A werewolf? Some resurrected monster from ancient myths?

Batman stood unmoving.

Only the floor beneath his boots betrayed the force he had unleashed, cracks spreading outward inch by inch from the recoil.

Silver Sable suddenly remembered the reports.

Scorpion Mac and Driver Walker had both described Kingpin's body as deceptively obese—almost entirely muscle, strength far exceeding human limits.

Batman knew this.

Which was why he hadn't tested the waters.

Using only half of Peter Parker's physical strength, Batman had chosen to end the fight quickly.

His goal was clear:

Subdue Kingpin fast.

Avoid excessive structural damage.

And, most importantly—do not break load-bearing pillars.

Batman stomped forward.

The floor trembled as he chased Kingpin through the ruined rooms.

From Silver Sable's and Matt Murdock's position, they couldn't see the fight anymore.

But they could hear it.

A rapid series of sharp, cracking sounds echoed through the building.

Like firecrackers.

Silver Sable's eyes narrowed.

"That sound…" she murmured. "Don't tell me—"

"He's crushing Kingpin's bones," Matt Murdock said calmly.

Silver Sable stiffened.

Minutes passed.

Then Batman reappeared, dragging Kingpin's massive, broken body across the floor like a discarded coat.

Kingpin was barely conscious.

Batman stopped in the center of the boardroom, released his grip, and looked toward Matt Murdock.

"He's yours," Batman said.

Without another word, he turned and leapt through the shattered window, disappearing into the city beyond.

By the time Silver Sable rushed to the window, Batman was already gone.

Only broken glass and cold wind remained.

Kingpin lay motionless.

Matt Murdock didn't touch him.

Instead, he calmly called the Manhattan Police Department and requested immediate transfer.

The man who once ruled Hell's Kitchen had fallen.

---

Even inside the detention cell, Kingpin said nothing.

He didn't scream.

He didn't beg.

He didn't rage.

His face returned to that familiar, gentle expression—as if the shattered bones beneath his skin belonged to someone else.

Matt Murdock and Silver Sable watched as officers locked the cell door.

Only when they were about to leave did Kingpin finally speak.

"You think of yourselves as heroes," Kingpin said slowly. "You believe prison can hold me."

Matt Murdock stopped.

He turned his head toward the voice.

"The real prison," Kingpin continued, "is the chaos outside. The disorder caused by cockroach-like gangs fighting over scraps."

His voice was calm.

Confident.

"In three months at most, I'll walk free again. Only I can bring order to the underground."

Kingpin leaned back on the narrow bed.

Yet the way he spoke made it sound like a throne.

"When you see a broken bridge," he said, "and you are the only one with the strength and the blueprint to fix it—you have a responsibility to do so."

"New York needs an underground emperor."

Matt Murdock nodded once.

Then he moved to the detention cell directly opposite Kingpin's.

With permission from the officers, he opened the iron partition separating the cells and pointed inside.

"You're right," Matt said calmly. "But they've already confessed."

Kingpin's eyes followed his finger.

Inside the opposite cell stood two men.

Scorpion Mac.

And Driver Walker.

"They've confessed to everything," Matt continued. "Cigarettes. Firearms. Prostitution. Robbery."

"As a lawyer," he added, "I can't name your sentence. But you already know what's coming."

For the first time, Kingpin's composure cracked.

His heart sank.

With Walker and Scorpion testifying, life imprisonment was almost guaranteed.

Matt Murdock turned away.

He had already made a decision.

Ivan and his daughter Maddie would never have to appear in court.

Walker and Scorpion were enough.

What did Batman do to make Walker talk? Matt wondered.

I hope he never learns who I really am.

With that thought, Matt Murdock left the station.

---

From a nearby rooftop, Batman watched.

He removed his cowl.

Now wearing a simple plaid shirt, Peter Parker blended back into the city like any ordinary man.

"That lawyer," Peter muttered, "is Daredevil."

During the fight, Matt Murdock had been listening to Batman's heartbeat.

At the same time, Batman had been using Peter Parker's enhanced senses to analyze Matt's.

Walker's confession mentioned injuring Daredevil's thigh.

Matt Murdock had the same injury.

The same heartbeat.

The same blindness.

The same faint scent of medicine on his leg.

Batman didn't need proof.

But Daredevil wasn't an enemy.

There was no reason to expose him.

Batman had more urgent matters.

Norman Osborn was still missing.

And Dr. Otto urgently needed surgery to remove the mechanical tentacles and restore his humanity.

Then there was the message.

That morning, when Peter returned to his apartment, Ursula—the landlord's daughter—had passed it on.

Tony Stark couldn't reach Batman.

So he contacted Empire State University.

They contacted Aunt May.

And Aunt May called Peter.

The request?

Technical assistance.

To put it simply—

S.H.I.E.L.D. wanted Batman to build a firewall.

To stop Batman.

Peter Parker smiled faintly.

"Let bats defend against bats," he said softly.

And vanished into the city once more.
