The white light faded slowly, reluctantly, like fog burning away beneath a rising sun.
Alex blinked until his vision cleared. He stood on the same black metal floor, though the vibration beneath his feet had settled into a low, constant purr. Above them, the holographic sphere still floated, turning lazily as endless streams of data cascaded across its surface. Cyan lines glowed along the curved walls. Floating panels hovered at eye level, symbols racing too quickly to follow. The dome overhead revealed only endless black speckled with unfamiliar stars—no moon, no clouds, no constellations he recognized.
Kaelith crouched on one knee, claws extended, and a deep growl rumbling in her throat. Her tail lashed from side to side. Amber eyes darted in every direction, ears pinned flat, fur bristling along her spine.
Mara gripped Alex's arm, fingers digging in hard. The manic smile had vanished, replaced by wide eyes and trembling lips.
"Hero…" she whispered, voice cracking. "Where are we? What is this place?"
The Flamefist Gauntlet still smoldered on his left hand, crimson light clashing against the cool cyan glow. Alex gave Mara's hand a single reassuring squeeze, then turned his attention to the sphere.
"It's a control room," he said, voice steady. "Machines from a distant world, but far more advanced."
Kaelith rose slowly. Her claws retracted partway, though the growl never ceased.
"Machines? Like forges?" She sniffed the air. "No coal or iron, only cold and emptiness."
A soft electronic chime rang out, clean and precise.
Then the female voice returned—calm, modulated, almost intimate.
"Welcome to the Labyrinth's Heart, Alexander. You are now recognized as Administrator."
The gauntlet flared brighter. Flames licked up his forearm.
"Explain," Alex commanded, voice flat and unyielding. "Everything, now."
A new projection unfolded beside the sphere: a cross-section of the Labyrinth, floors spiraling downward in a perfect nautilus pattern. Glowing nodes pulsed at regular intervals along the descent.
"The Labyrinth is not a natural dungeon," the voice continued. "It is a constructed engine. A self-sustaining power generator built by the Architects long before the world, existed in its present form."
The view zoomed to a single floor. Tiny avatars moved, fought, and fell. Each death triggered a red flash. Every flash fed upward through glowing conduits, converging at the center in a massive, throbbing core of crimson energy.
"Every death within the Labyrinth, monster or sentient, releases a measurable surge of what your world calls soul energy. This energy is harvested, refined, and stored. It powers the system: monster respawns, loot generation, floor expansion, trap resets, and environmental cycles. Greater death yields greater power. Greater power yields greater rewards to lure new participants."
The projection shifted to show adventurers stepping through rifts, slaying goblins, skeletons, and minotaurs, perishing to traps or bosses. Each event fed the core, making it pulse brighter.
"The Labyrinth is engineered to be irresistible. It offers gold, artifacts, power, and glory—knowing mortals will kill to claim them. The more they kill, the stronger it grows. A perfect, eternal closed loop."
Kaelith's growl deepened. Her tail whipped violently.
"So, we are fuel? All the blood we spilled… it fed this machine?"
"You were," the voice replied, serene. "Until now."
The sphere refocused on Alex. A sharp green spike appeared when his avatar materialized on the display.
"The Keystone served as a failsafe—a backdoor left by the previous Administrator before the system locked them out. You activated it. Administrative privileges are now yours. You may access core functions, adjust parameters, view data, and, if you choose, alter the cycle."
Alex stared at the sphere, thoughts racing.
He understood the logic, if not the runes or the soul-energy physics. Input death, output rewards. Scale the input, scale the output. A game economy running on real lives.
"Why me?" he asked quietly.
"Because you have potential ant the system measures potential"
A panel opened. Statistics scrolled past:
Soul Energy Harvested (Personal Contribution): 1,847 units
Combat Efficiency: 98.7%
Dominance Index: 99.4%
Will Resistance to Binding: Unquantifiable
His mouth twisted.
"And if I do nothing?"
"The Labyrinth continues, adventurers enter and die. While power accumulates, eventually the cycle reaches critical mass. Then expansion, new worlds, new rifts and more fuel."
Mara's nails bit into his skin.
"Hero… we can stop it. Right?"
The voice answered before he could speak.
"You can. As Administrator, you may shut down floors, disable respawns, and seal rifts. Or increase efficiency, amplify rewards, and attract more participants. The choice belongs to you."
Alex's jaw clenched.
"And if we walk away?"
"The Keystone is bound to you, Alexander. You cannot abandon it and you cannot destroy it. You are part of the system now. The Labyrinth will always call you back."
He glanced at Kaelith, then Mara, then at the stone fragments still clutched in his fist.
The green dot representing him pulsed brighter on the map.
He crushed the remaining pieces. Dust drifted between his fingers.
The sphere responded with two slow pulses, then dimmed slightly.
"Administrative access confirmed," the voice said, a trace of satisfaction in its tone. "Welcome, Administrator. The Labyrinth awaits your first command."
Alex studied the projection—the endless floors spiraling into shadow, the three green dots, the red lines carrying death energy upward like blood through veins.
He looked at Kaelith, then Mara.
Then back at the sphere.
"Show me everything," he said, voice hard and certain.
The holographic sphere pulsed once more. Red data streams converged like veins into the beating heart at its center. The female voice calm, and almost soothing continued without hesitation.
"As Administrator, you have full access to the core systems. Allow me to detail the mechanics."
Panels expanded around the sphere. Red lines traced energy flow, blue grids displayed structural maps and green charts tracked participant metrics. Alex stepped closer, a mara and kaelith flanked him, eyes wide.
"The Labyrinth is a self-sustaining engine created by the Architects—an ancient trans-dimensional race that harnessed soul energy as universal fuel. Every death generates red essence, measured in units. Monsters yield 1 to 50 units depending on strength. Sentient beings yield 100 to 500, scaled by power and will. Invisible conduits embedded throughout every floor, wall, and trap harvest the energy instantly."
A simulation unfolded: a red avatar slew a blue one. Crimson energy burst from the corpse and raced upward through glowing pipes to feed the core.
"Harvested energy converts at 85% efficiency, with 15% lost to entropy. The refined energy powers the primary systems."
The voice listed them methodically.
Monster Respawn: Red energy recreates creatures from templates. Basic goblins require 5 units; minotaur-class bosses require 200. Respawn timers shorten during high-death periods.
Loot Generation: Rewards manifest to entice participants. Loot tables use refined blue energy. Common items cost 1 to 10 units; rare artifacts like your Flamefist require 500 or more. The system scans participant desires to tailor drops and maximize engagement.
Floor Expansion: At 10,000-unit thresholds, new levels generate automatically, increasing difficulty to sustain death rates.
Trap and Environment Cycles: Energy sustains illusions, layout shifts, pitfalls, dynamic weather. Each cycle costs 50 to 100 units.
Rift Management: New world entry points open at 100,000-unit milestones. Additional rifts accelerate participant inflow and exponential growth.
The panels shifted to Alex's contribution chart.
"Your Dominance Index and Will Resistance marked you as an ideal candidate. The system prioritizes individuals who generate high yields without dying."
Kaelith snarled, claws flexing.
"So, it's all a game? We're cattle?"
"It's a cycle engineered to perpetuate itself eternally," the voice replied neutrally.
Mara pressed closer to Alex.
