Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: Finals – Part 1

The Iron Pit had become a screaming abyss under the night sky. The sand was no longer sand. It was a churning morass of blood, sweat, vomit, and pulverized bone fragments ground into the surface over hours of carnage. The massive braziers roared like open furnaces, fed fresh pitch by attendants who moved like ghosts between the flames. Their light painted everything in hellish reds and flickering golds, turning the arena into a living wound under the night sky. The crowd had transcended madness. It was a single organism now, thousands of throats fused into one continuous, guttural howl that shook the stone tiers and rattled ribcages. Nobles in their boxes gripped railings until knuckles whitened, silk torn and stained. Commoners climbed over each other to get closer to the ring, some already bleeding from elbows and fists in the press.

The announcer's voice cracked across the din like breaking bone.

"Final match of the Iron Ring Open Bracket! Slot A versus Slot B! Alex the Flamefist versus the Hooded One!"

The roar that answered was apocalyptic, deafening, physical, a wall of sound that pressed against skin and eardrums until it hurt to breathe.

Alex stepped onto the sand first.

He looked different.

The Flamefist Gauntlet burned steadily now, ruby blazing like a dying star, heat rippling off his skin in visible waves that warped the air. His longsword hung loose in his right hand, point trailing a thin line through the bloody sand. His face was stone, eyes black with rage, jaw locked so tight the muscles stood out in cords. Every line of his body radiated murder. The crowd felt it. Even the drunkest voices faltered for half a heartbeat when they saw him.

Then the opposite tunnel darkened.

A figure emerged, slow, deliberate, hooded and cloaked in midnight-black fabric that seemed to drink the torchlight rather than reflect it. No armor visible beneath the cloak. No weapon immediately apparent. The hood was deep; face completely shadowed except for the faint gleam of eyes like polished obsidian. The figure moved without sound, boots leaving no print in the sand, tail hidden beneath the cloak, posture unnaturally still. No flourish. No taunt. Just quiet, absolute menace.

The crowd's roar faltered, uncertain, then surged again, louder, hungrier.

Alex's Flamefist flared brighter, flames roaring up his arm to the shoulder. His voice cut through the noise like a blade, low, lethal, shaking with barely-contained fury.

"Take off the hood."

The figure stopped ten paces away. Slowly, deliberately, raised gloved hands to the cowl.

The hood fell back.

Black horns curved backward from a high forehead, polished obsidian, sharp enough to gut a man. Skin the color of fresh bruises, deep violet-black, shimmering faintly with inner heat. Crimson eyes burned like coals, slit pupils fixed on Alex with cold, amused cruelty. Full lips peeled back in a smile that showed fangs longer than Kaelith's, needle-sharp, gleaming wetly.

A female demonkin.

She tilted her head, voice smooth, smoky, carrying effortlessly over the roar.

"You wanted to know who broke your little pet, Flame-boy?"

Alex's gauntlet flared, flame roaring louder, heat warping the air around him.

"You touched what's mine," he said, each word carved from ice and rage. "You made her bleed and you made her yield."

The demonkin laughed, low, musical, cruel.

"She fought well. For a collared bitch. But chains make everything weaker." She flexed gloved fingers, black claws extending through slits in the leather. "I wanted to see how far your toy would go before it snapped. Turns out… not far."

Alex took one step forward, sword rising.

"You're going to scream," he said, quiet, certain. "You're going to beg. And when I'm done, there won't be enough left to bury."

The demonkin's crimson eyes narrowed, smile widening.

"Then come take it, little hero."

The horn blared.

They collided like thunder.

Alex exploded forward, longsword whipping in a diagonal arc meant to split her from collarbone to hip. The demonkin flowed sideways, boneless, the blade kissing empty air by a whisper. She countered instantly, claws flashing in a four-line rake across his chest. Wyvern leather shredded. Skin parted to muscle. Blood sprayed in hot arcs, splattering her face. Pain detonated white-hot through his ribs. He snarled, pivoted on his heel, and drove the Flamefist straight into her floating ribs.

Fire erupted on impact, white-hot corona swallowing her side. Cloak ignited in patches. Ribs cracked like dry branches under the blow. Flesh blistered black, fat sizzling as it liquefied. The wet hiss of burning meat filled the air. She staggered sideways for the first time, coughing wetly, blood flecking her lips from a punctured lung, then laughed through the pain, crimson eyes blazing brighter.

She lunged low, claws hooking for his thigh. Alex twisted, took the strike on the outside of his leg, deep gouges tearing meat to bone. Blood poured down his calf, soaking boot, making every step slick. He roared, flipped the longsword to his left hand in a brutal reverse grip, and slammed the gauntlet down onto her exposed shoulder.

Flame punched through cloak and muscle. Bone cracked audibly. Her arm dropped, limp, smoking. She hissed, fangs bared, then drove her good elbow into his temple with demonic force. Stars exploded behind his eyes. Vision swam. He staggered, sword slipping from numb fingers, clattering to the sand.

The crowd lost its collective mind, screaming both names, stomping until the tiers trembled, some spectators climbing the barriers in blind frenzy.

The demonkin pressed, claws dripping his blood, smile wide and ecstatic.

"Yield, Flame-boy. Or I'll carve your heart out and feed it to your broken bitch while she watches from the stands."

Alex spat a thick gob of blood onto the sand. Looked up at her. Eyes blacker than the void.

"You touched what's mine," he repeated, voice calm now, deadly calm.

He rose slowly.

Flame roared up his arm, engulfing the gauntlet entirely. The ruby blazed like a newborn sun. Heat waves shimmered so fiercely the nearest braziers flickered in response.

He charged.

They met in the center, claws against inferno, shadow against vengeance.

She raked at his face. He caught her wrist mid-strike, twisted hard, bone grinding under his grip, then yanked her forward into a brutal headbutt. Her nose pulped with a wet crunch. Blood exploded across both faces, hot and metallic. She snarled, tail whipping out from under the cloak, barbed tip lashing his calf like a whip, drawing fresh red. He ignored it, drove his knee into her gut, folding her over with a guttural wheeze, then slammed the flaming gauntlet upward into her jaw.

Fire met bone. Teeth cracked and flew. Her head snapped back. She staggered, spitting shattered fangs, then retaliated, good hand clawing for his throat. Nails sank into flesh just below his jaw. Blood sheeted down his neck in thick ropes. He roared, grabbed her horn with his free hand, used it like a handle, and slammed her face-first into the sand.

Sand sprayed in a choking cloud. She rolled, came up spitting grit and blood, lunged again, claws aiming for his eyes.

Alex ducked, came up inside her guard, wrapped his arm around her waist, lifted her clean off the ground despite the size difference, and hurled her toward the nearest brazier.

She twisted mid-air, cat-like, landed on one knee beside the roaring flames. Heat scorched her back. Cloak smoldered. She laughed again, wild, delighted, then snatched a handful of burning pitch from the brazier edge and flung it at him.

Molten pitch arced through the air. Alex rolled left, pitch splattered sand where he'd stood, igniting in a greasy flare. He came up running, tackled her low around the thighs, drove her backward into the brazier itself.

Metal screamed. Flames roared higher. Her back hit the iron rim, skin sizzling on contact with a sickening pop. She screamed, high, furious, then drove both knees into his chest, launching him off her. He skidded across sand, rolled, came up on one knee, gauntlet still blazing.

Blood streamed from a dozen wounds. Breath came in wet rasps. Vision tunneled to her alone.

The demonkin rose slowly, cloak half-burned away, skin blackened in ugly patches, horns cracked from the impact. Crimson eyes glowed brighter, feeding on the pain, on his rage, growing stronger.

She flexed her good claws.

"Come closer, hero," she purred through bloodied teeth. "I want to feel your heart stop beating in my hand."

Alex grinned, bloody, feral.

"Then come take it."

He charged again.

The Pit shook with every impact.

And the fight was far from over.
