Chapter 67 - Seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 4 – Episode 11: "What Was Left Behind"

Amara's POV

Luke didn't say much after Ethan arrived.

He finished the lunch rush like nothing had happened.

Calm.

Focused.

Precise.

But I could see it.

The weight.

It sat on his shoulders the way it always did when something from his past resurfaced.

Ethan stayed.

Not at a table.

Not as a guest.

He stood near the back most of the afternoon, watching.

Learning.

Waiting.

Marcus leaned toward me quietly.

"He's still here."

"I see that."

Marcus frowned.

"I don't trust people who just… linger like that."

Rose, overhearing, said calmly,

"He's not lingering."

Marcus blinked.

"What is he doing then?"

Rose didn't look up from the register.

"He's deciding."

Carl added from the kitchen,

"So is Luke."

That part stuck with me.

Because I was deciding too.

And I didn't like how uncertain it felt.

Later That Night

The restaurant finally closed.

Chairs flipped.

Lights dimmed.

The kind of quiet that only comes after a long day.

Marcus stretched dramatically.

"I survived another emotional rollercoaster."

Carl chuckled.

"Go home, Marcus."

Rose grabbed her bag.

"Get some rest."

Marcus pointed toward Ethan, who was still near the back.

"I'm watching him."

Rose shook her head.

"No, you're not."

Carl added,

"We've got this."

Marcus hesitated.

Then nodded.

"Fine. But if he turns into a villain, I called it first."

The door closed behind him.

Then it was just us.

Luke.

Ethan.

Rose.

Carl.

And me.

The baby was asleep upstairs.

Safe.

Quiet.

Luke finally looked at Ethan.

"Walk with me."

Ethan nodded once.

They stepped outside.

Into the cool night air.

Rose glanced at me.

"You okay?"

I nodded.

"I just… don't know what this is yet."

Rose said gently,

"That's because it's not finished."

Carl leaned against the counter.

"Give Luke time."

But I couldn't shake the feeling in my chest.

Because sometimes…

Time doesn't fix things.

Sometimes it just reveals them.

Outside — Back Alley

Luke stood with his hands in his pockets.

Ethan leaned against the brick wall.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Ethan broke the silence.

"You look different."

Luke didn't react.

"I am."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"Yeah… I can see that."

A pause.

Then Luke said the thing that had been sitting there all day.

"You think I abandoned you."

Ethan let out a short breath.

"I think you walked away."

"That's not the same thing."

Ethan looked at him sharply.

"It felt the same from where I stood."

Luke held his gaze.

"I warned everyone."

Ethan shook his head.

"You raised concerns."

"I said the numbers didn't make sense."

"And then you left."

Luke's voice tightened slightly.

"Because no one was listening."

Ethan pushed off the wall.

"I was."

That stopped Luke.

Ethan stepped closer.

"I believed you had a plan."

Luke frowned.

"I did."

Ethan nodded.

"Yeah. Your plan was to walk away."

The words hit.

Not loud.

But sharp.

Luke took a breath.

"I couldn't stay in something I knew would fail."

Ethan laughed once.

"And I couldn't afford to walk away."

There it was.

The difference.

Not just choice.

Circumstance.

Luke said quietly,

"I didn't think about that."

Ethan shook his head.

"No. You didn't."

A long silence followed.

The kind that doesn't rush to be filled.

Then Luke said something different.

Something harder.

"You're right."

Ethan blinked.

Luke continued,

"I made the right decision."

A beat.

"But I didn't think about the people who couldn't make it."

Ethan studied him.

That wasn't the answer he expected.

Luke went on.

"I was focused on the deal. The risk. The outcome."

He looked at Ethan directly.

"I didn't think about what staying would cost you."

Ethan's jaw tightened slightly.

"That cost me everything."

Luke nodded.

"I know that now."

Another pause.

Then Ethan asked quietly,

"So what now?"

Luke didn't hesitate.

"Now I don't make that mistake again."

Ethan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Luke gestured toward the restaurant.

"It means if you're here… you're not invisible."

Ethan looked at the building.

At the light still glowing inside.

"You're offering me what?"

Luke answered simply.

"A chance to build something better."

Ethan let out a slow breath.

"You trust me?"

Luke shook his head.

"No."

That surprised him.

Luke continued,

"But I'm willing to try."

Ethan stared at him for a long moment.

Then nodded slightly.

"Fair enough."

Back Inside

When Luke came back in, I was waiting.

Rose and Carl gave us space.

They always knew when to.

I crossed my arms.

"Well?"

Luke stepped closer.

"We talked."

I raised an eyebrow.

"That's it?"

Luke studied me.

"You don't trust him."

It wasn't a question.

"No," I said honestly.

Luke nodded.

"I understand."

I looked toward the door.

"People don't show up like that without something behind it."

Luke agreed.

"I know."

I stepped closer.

"This isn't just about business."

"I know."

"This affects us."

"I know."

I held his gaze.

"And the baby."

That one landed deeper.

Luke's expression softened slightly.

"I'm not letting anything touch that."

I believed him.

But belief and trust aren't the same thing.

"What do you see in him?" I asked quietly.

Luke thought about it.

"Someone who stayed when I left."

I frowned.

"And that makes him trustworthy?"

"No," Luke said.

"It makes him worth understanding."

I sighed softly.

"That's a risk."

Luke nodded.

"Everything we've built started as one."

I couldn't argue with that.

But something still didn't sit right.

"Just… be careful."

Luke stepped closer.

"I will."

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then nodded.

"Okay."

But as I turned to head upstairs…

I glanced back once more.

At Luke.

At the restaurant.

At the door Ethan had walked through.

And something in my gut whispered quietly

This wasn't over.

Not even close.
