Seasoned With Love
Season 4 – Episode 10: "What Comes Back"
Amara's POV
The review dropped at 7:02 a.m.
Marcus was already inside.
Of course he was.
He stood behind the counter staring at his phone like it held the fate of the universe.
Rose walked in, set her bag down, and didn't even look at him.
"Well?"
Marcus didn't answer.
Carl came in right behind her.
"Don't tell me you're frozen again."
Marcus slowly turned the phone around.
Rose took it first.
Her eyes scanned quickly.
Then
She smiled.
Carl leaned over.
"What does it say?"
Rose read aloud:
"Hale Signature delivers precision, luxury, and technical excellence.
But Seasoned With Love offers something far rarer soul."
Marcus slammed the counter.
"YES."
Carl nodded slowly.
"That'll do it."
Rose kept reading.
"One restaurant impresses. The other connects.
In the long run, connection always wins."
Marcus pointed at the phone.
"That's a knockout."
I walked in just as the energy shifted.
"What happened?"
Marcus spun toward me.
"We just won the city."
Luke stepped out of the office.
He looked calm but I could see it in his eyes.
He already knew.
Rose handed him the phone.
Luke read the review quietly.
No big reaction.
Just a small exhale.
Carl watched him.
"That changes things."
Luke nodded.
"It does."
Marcus grinned.
"Expect a line out the door in about… ten minutes."
Right on cue
The front door opened.
Then another.
Then three more.
By 7:30, the restaurant was filling faster than we'd ever seen.
People weren't just coming for food anymore.
They were coming for what the review described.
For the feeling.
Marcus moved like he'd had five coffees.
"Welcome! Yes, we have soul! Table for two?"
Rose kept everything steady.
Carl stayed locked into the kitchen.
Luke was focused but lighter.
Like something had finally shifted in his favor.
I held the baby near the counter, watching it all unfold.
"Looks like we're busy," I whispered.
He blinked up at me like he already knew.
But by noon
Everything changed again.
The door opened.
And the air shifted.
Marcus noticed first.
"…oh."
Rose looked up.
Then froze.
Carl stepped out of the kitchen.
"What"
He stopped too.
Luke turned.
And for the first time all day
His calm cracked.
Standing in the doorway…
Was a man none of us had seen before.
But Luke had.
Tall.
Sharp.
Not dressed like an investor this time.
More… worn.
Like life had taken a few swings at him.
Marcus whispered,
"Who is that?"
No one answered.
Because Luke already knew.
The man stepped inside slowly.
Every step deliberate.
Every eye in the restaurant on him.
He stopped a few feet from the counter.
From Luke.
Then he said one name.
"Luke."
Not "Mr. Bennett."
Not polite.
Not distant.
Personal.
Heavy.
Luke didn't move.
"…Ethan."
Rose's eyes flicked toward Luke.
"You know him."
Marcus whispered,
"That's not a friendly 'know.'"
Ethan looked around the restaurant.
Taking it all in.
"This is what you built."
Luke stayed steady.
"Yes."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"Nice."
It didn't sound like a compliment.
Carl stepped closer to Luke.
Just enough.
Protective.
Rose crossed her arms.
Watching.
Always watching.
Ethan looked back at Luke.
"I read the article."
Luke said nothing.
Ethan continued.
"Funny how the truth comes out when it's convenient."
Marcus muttered,
"I don't like this guy."
Rose didn't disagree.
Luke finally spoke.
"What do you want, Ethan?"
Ethan smiled slightly.
"There it is."
He stepped closer.
"You walked away from that deal."
Luke nodded once.
"Yes."
Ethan's voice tightened.
"And I stayed."
The room got quieter.
Carl frowned.
"Stayed?"
Ethan looked at him.
"I worked on that project after Luke left."
Marcus blinked.
"…oh."
Ethan turned back to Luke.
"When everything collapsed…"
His jaw tightened.
"I lost everything."
There it was.
The piece no one had said out loud before.
Luke didn't look away.
"I didn't know."
Ethan let out a short laugh.
"Of course you didn't."
Rose stepped in carefully.
"What exactly are you saying?"
Ethan's eyes flicked toward her.
"I'm saying his decision didn't just affect investors."
He looked back at Luke.
"It affected people like me."
Marcus whispered,
"This just got real."
I felt my grip tighten slightly around the baby.
Luke spoke quietly.
"I walked away because it was wrong."
Ethan nodded.
"And I stayed because I believed in it."
A beat.
"Guess which one of us paid the price."
Carl shook his head.
"That's not fair."
Ethan snapped slightly.
"Fair?"
He laughed again.
"There's nothing fair about losing your career because someone else made a 'moral decision.'"
The tension in the room thickened.
Customers were definitely listening now.
Rose lowered her voice.
"This isn't the place for this."
Ethan didn't move.
"No," he said, looking around, "this is exactly the place."
Luke stepped forward.
"Not like this."
Ethan met his eyes.
"Then how, Luke?"
Silence.
Luke had no easy answer.
And that was the problem.
Ethan pointed around the restaurant.
"You get to build this life."
He gestured toward me.
Toward the baby.
"While people like me are still cleaning up the mess."
Marcus whispered,
"…okay that hurt."
Luke's voice stayed calm.
"I didn't cause the collapse."
Ethan's eyes hardened.
"You walked away before it happened."
Another beat.
"And left the rest of us inside it."
That landed.
Heavy.
Real.
Uncomfortable.
For a moment
No one spoke.
Then Luke said something different.
Not defensive.
Not sharp.
Honest.
"I can't change what happened."
Ethan stared at him.
"No."
Luke continued.
"But I can face it."
Rose glanced at Luke.
That was new.
Ethan folded his arms.
"Good."
He stepped back slightly.
"Because I'm not here for an apology."
Marcus whispered,
"Of course he's not."
Ethan looked Luke dead in the eye.
"I'm here because I want in."
The room blinked.
"…what?" Marcus said out loud.
Carl frowned.
"In what?"
Ethan gestured around.
"This."
Luke didn't react immediately.
Ethan continued.
"You built something real."
A pause.
"I want a place in it."
Rose's eyes narrowed.
"After that speech?"
Marcus added,
"Yeah, that was a very aggressive job interview."
Ethan didn't smile.
"I'm not asking for a favor."
He looked at Luke.
"I'm asking for a chance."
Silence settled again.
Luke looked at him.
Really looked.
Past the anger.
Past the history.
At the truth underneath.
Then Luke said quietly
"We talk."
Ethan nodded once.
"Good."
And just like that…
The past didn't explode.
It didn't end.
It walked in…
And sat down at the table.
And something told me
This wasn't going to be simple.
Not even close.
