Chapter 62 - The Ledger of Bones

The descent into the Sixth Sector was not a fall; it was a drop in liquidity.

As the brass sea drained away, the ghost ship didn't crash onto land or water. It slammed into a staggering abyss of pure, suffocating density. The air here was so heavy it felt like breathing liquid lead, every breath scraping against Kaelen's lungs like coarse glass.

When the thick, gray mist finally cleared, there were no sky-amphitheaters, no flashing ticker screens, and no oceans.

They were floating through an infinite, dark chasm surrounded by colossal, towering pillars that stretched up into an unseen ceiling. But the pillars weren't made of marble or stone. They were made of compressed, calcified human skeletons—millions upon millions of bones crushed together under immense gravitational force, forming the load-bearing architecture of the Syndicate's lower foundation.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

[Entering Layer: The Sixth Maritime House — The House of Absolute Mass]

[Conceptual Rule: Heavy Assets. Only absolute physical and spiritual weight holds value here.]

[WARNING: Gravitational Debt applied. Physical movement costs 3x energy.]

[Current Lifespan: 116 Days, 18 Hours.]

Kaelen knelt on the deck, his teeth grit so tightly a thin trickle of dark violet ink leaked onto the wooden planks. The sheer gravity of the Sixth Sector was pressing down on his frail, eighteen-year-old body like an invisible anvil. Every joint in his spine creaked.

"Master!"

Alaric dropped from the sky, landing heavily beside Kaelen. The glitched executioner-knight was visibly struggling. The static around his shoulders was compressed, flattened against his armor like dark oil, and the crack in his porcelain mask flickered erratically with weak, flickering white light.

"The space here... it's dense," Alaric rasped, his voice sounding compressed, as if passed through a heavy muffler. "The data isn't moving. They've frozen the market network. We can't execute short-sales or trade synthetic liabilities here."

"Because this isn't a trading floor," Kaelen wheezed, forcing his eyes open. His amber irises reflected the dreary, bone-white pillars surrounding them. "This is the Vault. This is where they store the collateral that defaulted."

"Kaelen, stop moving!"

Seraphina was already on her knees beside him. She was pale, her long white hair hanging in damp, tangled strands over her face, but her eyes held that same unhinged, protective fire. She didn't use her starlight to heal the ship or lighten her own weight; she funneled every single droplet of her primordial magic directly into Kaelen's legs and spine, acting as a magical scaffold to keep his bones from shattering under the gravity.

"You're burning through your soul output, Seraphina," Kaelen warned, his voice strained as he leaned heavily against her shoulder.

"I don't care," she spat, her voice sharp, trembling with a terrifying blend of devotion and terror. Her fingers dug into the fabric of his coat, clutching him as if the universe itself was trying to pull him away from her. "Let my soul break first. You are not allowed to collapse here. Not after what Lucian said."

Before Kaelen could respond, a deep, resonant sound echoed through the bone-chasm—not a bell or a trumpet, but the heavy, rhythmic thud of an iron gavel striking an anvil.

BOOM.

The pillars of bone trembled. Dust made of pulverized soul-ash rained down on the ghost ship's deck.

From the shadows between two massive bone pillars, a solitary figure emerged, floating casually through the heavy air.

He didn't wear gold, nor did he carry ivory scrolls. He wore a heavy, charcoal-grey three-piece suit made of tailored, leaden wool. In his right hand, he carried a massive, antique steel balance scale, and in his left, a thick leather-bound book with pages made of beaten iron.

Unlike the panicked deities of the Fifth House, his face was uncovered—a cold, middle-aged man with stone-grey skin, sunken eyes, and a mouth locked in a permanent, ruthless line.

[TARGET: Senior Auditor Vane (The House of Absolute Mass)]

[Role: Chief Liquidation Officer of the Sixth Sector]

[Status: Directly Commissioned by Executive Suite (Lord Lucian)]

"Director Kaelen," Auditor Vane spoke. His voice didn't echo; it was so dense it fell like a stone, vibrating straight through the iron hull of the ship. "Your market tricks were amusing in the upper layers. Floating synthetic debt, crashing short-positions... clever. But paper tricks do not work in the Sixth House."

Vane raised his iron-bound ledger, opening it to a page stamped with a glaring, bloody seal of Lord Lucian's personal emblem.

"Lord Lucian has signed an Executive Seizure Warrant," Vane declared flatly. "Your short-sale in the Fifth Sector created an un-collateralized deficit of 120 trillion points. Under Article 9 of the Syndicate Code, when paper assets fail, we perform a Physical Seizure of Core Assets."

Vane tapped his steel balance scale. A terrifying, violet-black gravity well instantly opened directly above Kaelen's head.

WHOOSH!

The force was instantaneous. Kaelen fell flat onto his hands and knees, the iron deck beneath him groaning and cracking. The violet veins on his neck bulged so violently they looked ready to burst. The system clock in his vision began spinning out of control—not counting down by seconds, but dropping by hours every heartbeat.

[ALERT: Physical Seizure in Progress!]

[Target: Kaelen's Soul Core]

[Lifespan Decreasing: 116 Days... 112 Days... 105 Days...]

"Kaelen!" Seraphina screamed. She threw her body over his, trying to shield him with her own flesh, but the gravity well ignored her, passing straight through her starlight to siphon the very life essence from Kaelen's core.

"Get off him, Auditor!"

A violent, glitched roar tore through the heavy air.

Alaric didn't hesitate. Bypassing Kaelen's orders, ignoring the crushing gravity that was cracking his own glitched armor, the Executioner-Knight lunged. His body shattered into a chaotic storm of un-coded black static, flying straight toward Auditor Vane with his massive glitched blade raised high.

Vane didn't even look up from his iron ledger. He simply adjusted the weight on his steel balance scale.

"Glitch data," Vane said, his voice dripping with bored disgust. "Zero intrinsic mass. Un-collateralized. Rejected."

BANG!

An invisible wall of absolute density slammed into Alaric mid-air. The sound of tearing metal and broken code screeched through the abyss as Alaric was smashed violently onto the bone-covered floor below, his static exploding into a cloud of scattered, flickering pixels.

"Alaric!" Kaelen coughed out, his eyes wide as he watched his first companion struggle to reform his body.

"Master..." Alaric's voice echoed weakly from the pit of soul-ash, his static flickering between pitch-black and a sickly, hollow white. The crack in his mask had spread across his entire face. "The code... it's too heavy... I can't... I can't lift the blade..."

Auditor Vane stepped closer to the edge of the ship, his steel scale tilting further as he stared down at Kaelen, who was bleeding violet ink from his eyes, nose, and mouth.

"Your companions are useless here, Director," Vane said coldly, raising his iron ledger once more. "Your short-sale ends today. Lord Lucian sends his regards."
