Chapter 61 - Liquidation Margin

The air on the deck turned ice-cold.

It was a strange, impossible cold, because the sea of molten brass beneath them was still boiling, sending waves of metallic heat crashing against the hull. But Kaelen's declaration—his open, reckless short-sale on the Fifth Maritime House—had summoned a literal blizzard of system numbers.

White, glowing ticker symbols fell from the black marble dome above like frozen rain, clattering against the deck planks before shattering into pure data.

[MARKET PANIC IN PROGRESS]

[Sector: Fifth Maritime House (Speculative Souls)]

[Target Asset: 'Human Destiny' Index]

[Value Drop: -82.4% and falling.]

[Margin Call Warning Issued to 4,200 High-Tier Deity Accounts.]

"Halt his balance!" a deity roared from the sky. The four-armed golden god Kaelen had mockingly called 'Chairman' leaned over the black marble balustrade, his porcelain mask cracking along the cheekbone under the sheer pressure of his dropping portfolio. "Freeze his account! The boy is an un-audited singularity! He is printing synthetic liabilities!"

"We can't freeze him, Chairman!" a lower-tier clerk-god shrieked from a floating projection screen, his hands frantically tapping at a burning ivory tablet. "His debt is backed by the Void Protocol! If we pause his transactions, his 120-trillion-point liability immediately liquidates into our primary clearing house! It will wipe out the sector's reserves!"

Kaelen took a slow, agonizing step forward.

Every movement cost him. Beneath his black coat, the violet-black veins across his collarbones throbbed with a sickening, rhythmic pulse. A drop of dark, ink-like blood spilled from the corner of his lips, dripping onto the wooden deck.

One hundred and seventeen days.

The system was warning him, but Kaelen's amber eyes were completely dead to the threat. He had lived through three lifetimes of this corporate game. He knew that when a market was built entirely on greed, the one who controlled the panic controlled reality.

"You traded human lives like crop yields," Kaelen said, his voice quiet, yet carried by the static in his core so clearly that it vibrated through the ivory scrolls held by the gods. "You placed puts on famines. You bought futures on plagues. You sat up here in your marble amphitheater, laughing as mortals took out high-interest soul loans just to survive another winter."

He raised his broken rowan cane, pointing its jagged, split tip directly at the four-armed golden god.

"Alaric," Kaelen whispered.

The shadows behind Kaelen didn't just move; they ruptured.

Alaric materialized not as a man, but as a towering pillar of glitched, corrupted black static. The crack in his porcelain mask burst open, spilling raw, white un-coded energy into the air.

"Direct me, Director," Alaric rasped, his voice pitch-shifted into a terrifying, multi-layered roar. "Whose assets do we repossess first?"

"The gold one," Kaelen commanded cold-bloodedly. "He's over-leveraged. His entire divinity is built on borrowed capital from the Third Heaven. Execute a forced buyout."

"With pleasure!"

Alaric kicked off the iron deck, leaving a crater of glitched wood behind. He shot into the sky like a spear of pure black noise, tearing straight through the floating projection screens. The gods screamed as Alaric bypassed their defensive barriers entirely. Because Alaric was an un-listed glitch, the trading floor's automated defensive system couldn't target him—it didn't know what to target.

CRASH!

Alaric slammed into the marble balcony, his glitched executioner's blade carving straight through the four-armed god's golden torso.

Instead of red blood, a torrent of glowing, golden currency and thousands of tiny, screaming soul-glyphs poured out of the god's wound like a broken slot machine.

"Aahhhhh! My equity! My celestial rank!" the god screamed, his porcelain mask shattering completely to reveal a hideous, shriveled face made of dried parchment and greed. "I am a deity of the Fifth House! You cannot liquidate a deity!"

"Your margin was met, Chairman," Alaric growled, his glitched hand wrapping around the god's throat and crushing it into pure, un-tradeable data. "Account... closed."

[ALERT: High-Tier Deity 'Lord Vaelen of the Golden Ledger' has been Liquidated.]

[Asset Seizure in Progress...]

[10,000 Human Soul Contracts Recovered!]

[Kaelen's System Deficit Absorbed: 4,000,000,000 Points!]

On the deck below, Seraphina felt the sudden, massive backlash of celestial energy.

She didn't care about the thousands of souls raining down like golden light into the sea. She didn't care that the sky was falling. Her wide, dark eyes were locked entirely on Kaelen.

The moment the four-billion-point debt was absorbed, Kaelen's body violently jolted. The violet-black ink in his veins receded slightly, but the sheer friction of processing that much dark data made him stumble backward.

Seraphina was there instantly.

She caught him before he hit the deck, wrapping her arms around his waist with an intensity that bordered on painful. Her hands pressed firmly against his chest, her primordial starlight erupting in a violent, protective flare, wrapping around his heart like a burning cage.

"I have you," she rasped, her forehead pressed against his shoulder, her long white hair whipping in the hot wind. She was hyperventilating, her holy aura twisting into something suffocatingly dense. "I won't let them take a single second from you, Kaelen. If your body breaks, I will weave my own soul into your ribs to keep you together. Do you hear me? You aren't dying here."

Kaelen looked down at her, seeing the manic, terrifying devotion burning in her eyes. The saint who had once prayed for the salvation of the world was now entirely, sickness-level obsessed with keeping a single broken boy alive.

"Seraphina..." Kaelen rasped, his hand resting weakly on her hair. "Look up."

The sky was no longer flashing green or red.

With the liquidation of their Chairman, the remaining gods of the Fifth House were in a state of absolute, unmitigated horror. The black marble dome was cracking. The brass ocean beneath them began to drain away into massive, whirlpool-like drain plugs, revealing the dark, abyssal descent to the next layer below.

The Fifth House was collapsing. But amidst the chaos, a single, pristine white system screen descended slowly from the highest heavens, floating right in front of Kaelen's face.

It carried no numbers. It carried no charts.

It carried a single, hand-written message from the Executive Suite, sealed with a crest of liquid diamond.

"Impressive short-sale, Director Kaelen. You destroyed a trading floor to save yourself a few weeks of life. But tell me... what will you sell when the next house demands a currency you don't possess? I am waiting in the Third Heaven. Don't keep your creditors waiting."

— L.

Kaelen stared at the letter, his amber eyes narrowing as the brass sea finally emptied, dropping their ghost ship into the dark, uncharted waters of the Sixth Sector.
