Chapter 23 - Cocoon

It didn't seem to notice Sunny, to his luck.

It seemed to be preoccupied with its own predicament. Upon another look, it was heavily wounded.

Still, Sunny did not want to be anywhere near the thirty foot tall spider, irregardless of it's damaged abdomen and broken limbs or it's torn face– or opened up head– for it lacked a face.

Hurrying to seek a place to hide, Sunny stepped on a twig, the noise was like a whole explosion in the quiet, making him freeze for a moment before immediately hurrying behind a tree, holding his dagger tight. If the spider were to come for him, even wounded, he still wouldn't stand a chance against something like that.

"Aid me," the sound came out loud and thunderous, tearing through the smoke, making it shift for the first time, like a wind that could not enter the smoking woods.

Was that the– no, it couldn't be, Sunny thought to himself, spiders couldn't talk.

Then again, spiders weren't thirty foot tall smoking faceless creatures.

After a silence, the voice spoke again, "You are no beast of the woods, my blood is on you, no beast would approach my blood. You are human."

At this point, Sunny began rethinking his genius idea. If he hadn't smeared himself with its blood, maybe it wouldn't have noticed him.

He could just leave, it was injured, maybe he had an actual chance.

Before he could move, his mouth betrayed him, speaking in an act of defiance to the silence demanded by the situation.

"Even if I could, why would I?"

"Because you are weak."

Sunny was ready to just walk away after that reply.

"But by covering yourself in my essence you prove to be smart. And in such, you would not have entered the smoking woods for nothing. There is something you seek. And I am the only powerful enough being that has the ability to reason with you."

Sunny gazed at his own reflection on the dagger's silver blade. He didn't have to get himself in unnecessary danger. Just because the thing could talk didn't mean it couldn't eat him just as easily.

" No," he spoke, tightly gripping the dagger.

"If I die here there shall be chaos in these woods, everything hiding from me shall emerge."

That was the verbal equivalent of a checkmate. The beast had sensed the cowardice within Sunny and as such had utilised it, confirming a fear it knew well was seeded within Sunny.

In the simplest of terms, if Sunny refused to gamble with his life here, he would have an assured death in no more than a day.

Sunny knew that at times one had to act illogical, but both the choices offered to him were very much the definition of illogical; approach a monster with the hope that it won't kill you or run away and be killed later.

" Aid me, and I shan't forget your deed," it spoke yet again, as though tugging at the thread of uncertainty within Sunny.

"You'll kill me."

" If you don't, you have an assured death by the end of the hour, and so will your allies."

The statement made Sunny remember that he wasn't the only one that had entered the smoking woods. There was Moonlight and Luna was in there too.

"How do you–"

"I sense everything within these woods," it paused for a moment before speaking again, answering a question that had just started forming in Sunny's head, "with the exception of the Detested Deceiving Beast."

It must have been referring to the bat. That would explain just why it could get caught off guard.

Immediately, a thought crossed Sunny's mind, if it could sense everything in the woods then it would definitely know where Luna was.

"How would I help you, if I wanted to?" Sunny stepped from his hiding, despite knowing well he was taking a risky gamble.

At this moment, Sunny wondered just what he was planning to do. How exactly did he expect to heal a monster? Still, he felt his time hiding was dragging him too much. An opportunity to have such a powerful creature at your disposal would prove quite helpful.

"You must trust me," it spoke, drastically reducing Sunny's trust in it.

He took a step back.

"Say another weird thing and I'm leaving, I need to find someone and go home."

"I can be of help with that too."

"I know, that's why I'm willing to help you. Now tell me how."

"Pour your blood upon me, and allow me to be one with you."

Silence.

Absolute.

For a moment, Sunny thought that he was hearing things.

How would pouring his blood on it make it heal? This was a trap most definitely.

"If I do that, then what happens?"

"Then I shall be indebted to you."

Sunny couldn't allow himself to get close enough to pour blood on it. There was a border of illogical acting he wasn't willing to cross.

"All you need is my blood?"

"Yes."

Sunny looked at himself in the reflection on the blade yet again and took a deep breath before running the edge of the blade across his palm.

If he was going to die here anyways, might as well have at least made an effort in an attempt to seek Luna.

With his dagger soaked in his blood, Sunny threw it at the spider, immediately rethinking the decision the moment the dagger slipped his grip.

Immediately the dagger hit the spider, his blood coming in contact with it, Sunny felt a sudden pain grip him. His whole body was in a burning sensation, one so severe he dropped on the ground, accepting a fate he had simply brought upon himself.

"Why are you so stupid?" He cursed himself, his vision blurring until his consciousness faded.

When he came to be, Sunny found himself enshrouded in webbing. He dug, frantically seeking a freedom he found quicker than he expected. The cocoon was made with a webbing mich weaker than the one that had made the damaged web he had encountered before.

After catching his breath, Sunny rose his head, seeing before him a sword emitting a dark smoke similar to the one emitted by the trees.

"Is this supposed to be a thanks or a sorry, or a 'ha! Sucker!' kinda gift?" Sunny spoke out to a spider that was no longer present.
