Macy hesitated, unsure if Jared's bond with her was real — unsure enough that she had kept the news of the pup hidden, afraid that knowing might push him toward a choice he wasn't ready to make and didn't yet understand. Truth be told, Jared probably didn't fully understand his own feelings yet either. Some people need time to catch up to what they already know.
Ashton's car rolled up to the entrance, and I parted from Jared with a brief wave. "I'll talk to you later — I have to go."
"Make sure you have someone trustworthy with you when you deliver!"
I stopped. Turned the words over, blinked at them. Strange thing to call after someone. But not entirely unwelcome, coming from him. I didn't have a mother-in-law hovering at the edges of every decision, and unless complications arose, the choices surrounding the birth belonged to me and no one else. I filed it away and got into the car.
