"Get closer to the headstones!" I shouted. I wiped a layer of sweat and dust from my eyes with my good hand. "Do not let them get behind the line!"
Freda moved right next to me. Her shoulder pressed against my uninjured side, and she was breathing so hard I could feel her ribs expanding against mine. She held her knife out with both hands, her legs spread wide to keep her balance on the slippery grass.
"They are hitting Viktor's left flank first," Freda said.
"Let them eat each other," Rex said. He came up on my left, his face splattered with fresh dark blood that wasn't his. He had a tight grip on his iron pipe.
"They won't stop with Viktor," I said.
The first rogue wolf arrived at our little corner. It was a skinny gray female with half her left ear missing and long yellow teeth. She didn't growl. She just launched herself right at Freda's throat.
