"A toast?" Nevan asked softly as he pushed the crystal glass across the desk.
"Won't Madam Maeve be angry if we start without her?"
Nevan shook his head, "As long as we save some for her, she won't mind."
Reis took the glass. "Cheers."
It was the first drink he had ever been offered since coming here. Maybe that's why it tasted so odd.
Not in a bad way, though. It was something that tasted richer than most other non-alcoholic drinks. No matter how fascinating this world was, normal beverages didn't have much variety.
But this was different. The sweet flavor was intensified by the buzzing sensation and the slight bitter aftertaste. It felt warm when it passed his throat.
Nevan drank down his first glass pretty fast. But Reis had always been a slow drinker. More so now because he was in a body not used to alcohol.
He was sure to be washed out by more than one person if they found out. Even though he was more than old enough to drink by this world's standards.
