He unhooked my legs from his waist and lowered me back down to the floor, but the moment my feet touched the cold ground, my knees completely buckled beneath me, my body too spent and shaky to hold any weight at all. Everything in me felt liquid, dissolved, as though he'd rearranged something fundamental inside my bones.
Jerry caught me instantly, his arms sliding around my waist to pull me tight against his chest before I could fall. The sudden withdrawal of his heat made me let out an embarrassing, pathetic whine, my body already mourning the loss of contact, craving the warmth I'd only just started to trust.
I hated how quickly I'd come to depend on it, how foreign and unwelcome the cold air felt against my bare skin now.
