Chapter 14 - OUTSIDE THE TOWER

The rift vomited him on top of the Tower. The Tower's rooftop gave him a better view of what was happening outside. What he saw as soon as he stepped out of the rift, made his heart ache. The peaceful world he had expected to welcome him was no more.

The monsters that were supposed to be in the Tower were now running rampart on the streets. Buildings that had stood for decades, were now piles of debris. Everywhere his sight stretched was the same. Everything had fallen apart. He slumped onto the ground as his legs gave out.

Then the leporid stepped out of the rift.

"What's wrong? Don't like my gift?"

A gift? How can this be a gift.

"What... do you mean by a gift?" He asked, despair filling his eyes.

"I was wondering what I should gift the last survivor of all Towers, and then something came up in my mind.

Since you've been alone for almost half a century and cleared all the floors, it's only natural you would despise the weak. So I did you a favor. I resurrected and released all monsters that died within the Tower. From the first to the last floor. That way you won't have them trouble you. Well, I did give them a chance but they were not strong enough to survive.

How does it feel to hear that all monsters you killed ended up eliminating weaklings? Are you happy?"

Reagan couldn't believe the ramblings of this mad creature. Part of him wanted to believe that humanity has ceased to exist but a part of him couldn't.

"You are joking right? Right... this has to be another floor." Reagan asked hoping that the curator could agree with him. But

"You don't like my gift? No matter where I go I will never understand humans. Why do you protect the weak?

...

"Well, I'll have to break it to you, there is no other floor after the 100th."

"But you promised you would spare the outside world if we cleared the floors."

"I did promise that, but some promises can't be fulfilled."

Reagan couldn't believe it. All those near death scenarios, the hard work, the sacrifices, the player's deaths, why they all for nothing? If so, why? What were they fighting for? And then Reagan remembered something. The last floor clear reward. The wish. If he could just get that reward, then everything would turn back. He faced the curator and asked him,

"The wish. The final reward for clearing the Tower. Where is it?"

"Wish? Are you talking about the wish?

"Yes. Where is it?"

Then came a maniacal laughter.

"What's funny?"

"HAHAHA! Right the wish. I always wondered what kept you pushing forward but I didn't think it was that. That is a thing the Outer Gods came up with, but I didn't realize it had this much effect. HAHAHA!"

Outer Gods?

"What do you mean by outer gods? Who are they and why didn't they fulfill their promise?"

"The Outer Gods are beings that a mere mortal can't comprehend. They are the rulers of creation. Since they created all beings, it's only natural they do their part. So they created the Towers and watched you as you all tried to clear it. There is no way they will have a deal with a mortal."

Only now did Reagan realize what Dracena meant when she advised him not to believe in the Tower. They were just tools for amusement in front of the gods. He couldn't hold it in anymore. How dare they use him. Rage welled inside him. He knows very that he is no match for the enemy in front of him, but he couldn't forgive him. His family, friends, everything he cherished is now gone. He couldn't accept it.

"Seems like you completely lost it. Well, I don't have anything to gain if I kill you so I will just toss you to your friends. They do hold grudges so make sure you put on a good show for the gods." With that, he snapped his fingers and the Tower together with him vanished. Reagan fell into the pit of the monsters.

Boom.

The noise alerted the nearby monsters. The monsters hadn't encountered any prey for a while, this was like a prayer come true. They immediately charged towards him stumbling on each other. Reagan withdrew his sword as the monsters surrounded him. He focused all his rage towards the monsters and charged forward slaughtering any monster. As strong as he is, he couldn't last more than an hour against the monsters.

The red dragon Dracena flew above them incinerating everything. The robe's durability was almost zero. It couldn't protect him from the Dragon's breath attack. The attack vaporized him together with the monsters near him.

As his consciousness faded into darkness, his life flashed before him. His mother, sister, brother, friends, lover, memories. He could only wish this was a dream but reality is cruel.

'Why? Why do I have to suffer? Is it because am a low race? I only wanted to have my life back. I only wanted to eat my mother's potatoes again. Why can't I have that. The outer gods. If only I had one more chance, I would make sure I kill all them.'

He prayed. But who was he praying to? The same gods who used him as a tool of amusement and then discarded him when his value was over?

Before despair could completely overwhelm him, he heard a voice.
