Chapter 64 - Volume 15: The Heart That Bends. Chapter 3: The Anointing of Loyalty

Ren's tent was lit only by an oil lamp.

The light was warm, golden, almost soft… but in that closed, intimate space, it seemed more like a watchful eye.

Ren pulled back the flap as he entered with Ty Lee beside him.

She walked slowly, barely limping.

She still felt the pain in her ankle, but her breathing trembled for another reason: they were alone.

Ren gestured.

—"Sit."

Ty Lee obeyed immediately, lowering herself onto the floor cushion.

Her hair fell messily across her cheeks, damp with sweat and tears.

The twist in her leg was slightly swollen, but she didn't take her eyes off Ren for a second.

He knelt in front of her, took a small bowl of cool water and a clean cloth.

Every movement he made was slow.

Calculated.

Serene.

Ty Lee watched him, mesmerized.

—"Does it hurt?" Ren asked, taking her ankle between his hands.

Ty Lee felt a shiver.

Not from the pain.

But from the touch.

—"Y… yes," she whispered.

Ren tilted his head with almost clinical interest.

—"It's good that it hurts," he said. "It will remind you why you got injured."

Ty Lee lowered her gaze, ashamed.

—"I just… wanted you to see me…"

Ren pressed the ankle slightly, making her gasp.

—"I'm not someone you should impress with clumsy sacrifices, Ty Lee," he murmured, taking the cloth and gently wiping her skin. "And certainly not by hurting yourself for it."

Ty Lee swallowed.

—"I'm sorry… I… I don't want to disappoint you."

Ren looked her directly in the eyes.

That kind of gaze.

The kind that makes a person feel like their soul is being registered, evaluated, measured.

—"You don't disappoint me," he said. "But I need you to understand something very important."

Ty Lee nodded, nervously, waiting for his words.

Ren took her foot with both hands, firm, warm, establishing a point of connection that forced her to focus only on him.

—"What's most useful to me," he spoke with a calm that was both chilling and enveloping, "is not your physical effort, nor your acrobatics, not even your strength."

Ty Lee's lips parted, surprised.

Ren continued:

—"What I truly care about…

is your surrender."

Her breath hitched, feeling his words strike her right in the chest.

—"My… surrender?"

Ren leaned his body toward her, getting close without touching, but closing the distance to the limit.

His voice dropped lower, more intimate, almost a whisper that slid over her skin.

—"Your willingness to follow me without doubts.

To trust my decisions.

To obey my instructions without questioning them.

To be mine… in loyalty, in will, in purpose."

Ty Lee felt her heart accelerate.

The heat rose up her neck.

—"R-Ren… I… I want that. I want… to serve you. I want… to be with you."

He kept his gaze fixed, piercing.

—"Even when I ask you to do something Azula won't understand?

Even when your emotions are in conflict?

Even when I need you to keep your distance… or get closer?"

Ty Lee didn't hesitate.

Not this time.

—"Yes," she whispered. "I'll do whatever you need. I won't fail you."

Ren smiled.

A slow, minimal smile… but enough to make Ty Lee's shoulders relax.

He took her leg and began to wrap it with firm, precise movements.

—"Good," he said. "Because from you, I expect absolute obedience.

Not because you're weak…

but because I know you have the strength to give yourself completely."

Ty Lee closed her eyes for a moment.

She felt relieved.

Seen.

Recognized.

And that recognition both broke her and elevated her at the same time.

When Ren finished the bandage, he lifted her chin with a finger, forcing her to look at him.

—"Don't injure yourself again trying to prove your worth," he said. "You already know: your worth isn't in your physical strength."

Ty Lee took a deep breath.

—"It's… in my loyalty."

Ren caressed her cheek for a second with the back of his hand.

—"Exactly."

She leaned toward him, as if trying to get closer…

but Ren pulled away before she crossed that line.

He left her with her breath hitched.

Her heart beating in a frantic rhythm.

With the sensation of having been touched without being touched.

—"Rest," Ren ordered softly, standing up. "Tomorrow I want you in condition. Not to impress anyone… but to fulfill your role."

Ty Lee nodded, obedient, submissive… but also filled with a new fire.

One that Ren had just ignited.

And controlled.
