Chapter 62 - Volume 15: The Heart That Bends. Chapter 1: The Crack in the Smile

Ty Lee couldn't sleep.

The night was so still that every breath sounded like a whisper inside her tent. The White Lotus camp was silent, but she couldn't silence the storm raging within her.

She sat up on her travel cot, hugging her knees as the moon filtered a pale ray through the fabric.

Azula wasn't back yet.

Neither was Ren.

She had tried to convince herself for hours that she was imagining things.

But she wasn't.

She wasn't imagining anything.

Something had changed.

Azula had always been intense.

She had always had a way of dominating every space, even without saying a word.

But this afternoon… and especially tonight…

Ty Lee had felt something different in her.

An electric tension.

A gaze that was no longer just one of authority or pride…

but something deeper, sharper, more…

obsessed.

And Ty Lee had noticed because she herself was starting to feel something similar.

—"Ren…" she murmured, closing her eyes.

Just thinking about him made her chest tremble a little.

It was ridiculous, she knew.

Ren had this way of looking that pierced right through anyone's emotions, as if he knew what you were feeling before you did.

And it confused her.

It excited her.

It scared her.

A crunch outside made her jump.

She went to the tent's opening and peered out.

The forest was dark, but two figures were slowly emerging from the trees.

Azula…

and Ren.

They were walking back side by side.

But not as allies.

Not as companions.

Ty Lee saw the slight tremor in Azula's fingers, the way she kept them close to Ren's arm, almost touching but not quite, as if that centimeter of distance was more intimate than anything else.

She saw the expression on her face.

Softened.

Glowing.

Vulnerable.

Azula, the relentless princess, was… changed.

And Ren walked with that absolute calm, that dangerous and almost hypnotic confidence that made everyone lean toward him, that made everyone want to follow him.

Including Ty Lee.

Her heart leaped.

Azula and Ren stopped for a moment, murmuring something Ty Lee couldn't quite catch.

But Azula tilted her head slightly toward him, as if surrendering to a secret.

Ren raised a hand and stroked Azula's cheek with a slow, firm, silent gesture.

Ty Lee felt the air leave her lungs.

And Azula…

Azula closed her eyes.

There was no kiss.

No forbidden touch.

But the intimacy was deeper than any physical gesture.

It was emotional.

It was psychological.

It was absolute.

And Ty Lee felt it like a silent dagger.

Azula opened her eyes.

And for an instant—a single instant—Ty Lee saw her smile.

A small smile.

Rare.

Almost… happy.

As if for the first time in her life, she had found something that filled that constant void within her.

Ty Lee brought a hand to her chest.

And me?

Where do I fit in?

When Azula and Ren parted and each headed for their tent, Ty Lee retreated back into hers, trembling slightly.

She fell onto the bed, staring at the ceiling with wide eyes.

Her breathing was rapid.

Her heart ached.

Not from hatred.

Not from fear.

But because something inside her was bending.

Something that was starting to break.

Ty Lee had always been the cheerful girl.

The one who laughed.

The one who hugged.

The one who saw colors where others saw shadows.

But tonight…

Tonight she discovered a new feeling.

A feeling she didn't know how to handle.

A feeling that had the name Ren.

And another that had the face of Azula.

—"Why… why does it hurt so much?" she whispered, swallowing.

She received no answer.

The moon, outside, flickered between thick clouds.

And Ty Lee, for the first time in her life, felt jealousy.

Real jealousy.

Deep jealousy.

Dangerous jealousy.

Not of a friend.

But of a rival.

A rival she loved.

And a rival she feared.

A rival who had already won something that Ty Lee was beginning to desire…

without even realizing it.

Ren.
