"Would you refuse me?"
His question caused her to tremble.
She had not expected this—how could she have?
They had only known each other for three months now—courted for just one. How could she have expected it would lead to this question—so soon.
Her heart had nearly burst when she read the letter.
She had been unable to contain the overwhelming feeling swelling inside her. She feared it would consume her—or that she might shatter if she tried to hold it in.
So she screamed.
And she had run all the way here—to confirm his words… to know if it had all been a jest, because she was just to dazed to belive that the words in the letter could have been true.
But now, he was saying it to her face—just like she demanded.
And, as she always was every time she found herself in awe of the actions or words of the man who held her—Damaris was at a loss for words.
"I—" she paused, searching for the right words to speak.
What, even, were the right words?
