Chapter 122 - Part IV — A Path Called Velzahar

Silence.

Neither of us spoke.

The wind continued to drift across the cliff.

Far below...

An endless sea of darkness stretched beyond the horizon.

I lowered my gaze.

His words replayed over and over within my mind.

Create... Velzahar's path.

Simple words.

Yet...

They carried a weight heavier than any mountain I had ever lifted.

After a long while...

I finally raised my head.

"...If you knew."

The White Dragon quietly looked at me.

"If you knew all of this..."

"If you realized your thoughts weren't entirely your own..."

"If you discovered the invisible strings..."

I paused.

"...why didn't you stop?"

"...Why continue walking that path?"

The old dragon smiled.

Not bitterly.

Not proudly.

Simply...

Like someone remembering a distant dream.

"You believe realization changes everything."

His voice was gentle.

"It doesn't."

"It merely gives you a choice."

He slowly turned toward the endless darkness before us.

"When I realized..."

"I had already become the person those choices created."

"My habits."

"My instincts."

"My way of thinking."

"My understanding of strength."

"They had become me."

He closed his eyes.

"Breaking chains..."

"...is far more difficult than seeing them."

A quiet laugh escaped him.

"I struggled."

"I fought."

"I questioned every thought that crossed my mind."

"I doubted every decision."

"I wondered..."

"'Was that truly my choice?'"

"'Or another invisible push?'"

His smile slowly disappeared.

"There comes a point..."

"...where you no longer know the difference."

The words settled heavily in the air.

I understood.

No...

Perhaps I only understood a fraction.

But even that fraction felt frightening.

The White Dragon continued.

"So I stopped asking."

"I stopped trying to erase who I had become."

"Instead..."

"I began asking a different question."

His silver eyes met mine.

"'Who do I want to become now?'"

"Not yesterday."

"Not ten thousand years ago."

"Now."

He pointed toward my chest.

"That question..."

"...saved me."

I instinctively looked down.

"My future..."

He nodded.

"Exactly."

"You cannot rewrite your past."

"You cannot erase your mistakes."

"You cannot pretend your scars never existed."

"But every step you take after understanding them..."

"...belongs entirely to you."

A faint smile appeared on my face.

"...So that's why."

The old dragon chuckled.

"You finally understand."

"I was never trying to surpass Seraphim."

"I was trying..."

"...to surpass myself."

The dragon within his right eye seemed to become clearer.

Its gaze carried no arrogance.

Only unwavering conviction.

"Dracophim..."

"...wasn't born because Seraphim was incomplete."

"It was born..."

"...because I finally became complete."

The wind quietly swept between us.

For the first time...

I truly understood what he meant.

Techniques...

Were never just techniques.

They were reflections.

A sword reflected its wielder.

A cultivation method reflected its creator.

And the highest techniques...

Reflected an entire life.

No wonder...

No one could completely master another person's creation.

To truly master it...

One had to become its creator.

And by then...

It was no longer the same technique.

It had become something new.

The White Dragon smiled upon seeing the realization in my eyes.

"Good."

"Very good."

"You've reached the answer far sooner than I did."

He slowly looked toward the endless sky.

"I spent millions of years chasing another's perfection."

"You..."

"...still have the chance to chase your own."

His body flickered.

Very slightly.

Like a reflection disturbed by rippling water.

I immediately noticed.

"...You're disappearing."

He laughed softly.

"I told you before."

"I've been disappearing for tens of thousands of years."

"This conversation..."

"...was simply the last thing keeping me here."

I clenched my fists.

"...Will we meet again?"

The old dragon became silent.

Then...

He smiled.

"If fate wishes it."

"But don't wait for old ghosts."

"They belong behind you."

"You..."

"...belong ahead."

His body became even more transparent.

Individual scales dissolved into countless silver-white particles before reforming once again.

His time was running out.

The old dragon looked at me one final time.

There was no regret left within his eyes.

Only peace.

"Velzahar."

I stood a little straighter.

"Walk farther than I did."

"See farther than I could."

"When you stand upon the peak..."

"...do not look down."

"Look forward."

"The summit..."

"...is never the destination."

"It is merely where the next journey begins."

His voice grew quieter.

"And when the day comes..."

"...that someone stands before you."

"Someone seeking strength."

"Someone seeking answers."

"Do not give them your path."

"Help them find theirs."

The dragon inside his right eye slowly faded.

The circles within his left eye gradually stopped revolving.

He gave one final smile.

The warmest smile I had ever seen from him.

One completely free of burden.

"I no longer have any regrets."

"I leave the future..."

"...to you."

The wind blew once more.

His body shattered into countless silver-white particles.

They rose silently into the endless darkness.

Like stars returning to the night from which they were born.

I stood there.

Watching until the final particle disappeared.

Neither speaking.

Nor moving.

For a very long time.

Then...

I slowly bowed.

Not to a legendary dragon.

Not to a former Pure One.

Not to an Elder God.

But...

To my teacher.

"My path..."

I whispered into the silent darkness.

"I'll walk it."

"Not as another Nameless Sovereign."

"Not as another White Dragon."

"But..."

"As Velzahar."

The Shadow Realm remained silent.

Yet somehow...

For the first time since entering it seven years ago...

The silence no longer felt lonely.

It felt like a promise.
