The Head Instructor's Quarters
Jax set up his command post in the abandoned Iron Descent. The massive, vertical tunnel with its unpolished concrete and stale air was the physical antithesis of the elegant academy above. His furniture was simple and functional—a field cot, chemically charged lamp, and obsolete data pads—all deliberately unsubsidized.
Kara, his Operational Strategist, sat nearby, diligently running logistics. Her Luminarch power, confined to low-output numerical mapping, translated the raw physics of the descent into equations, calculating the Null-dampening coefficients for the mission's Anchors.
Jax, the Architect of Silence, was now tasked with defining the Ascendancy Protocol. The philosophy was simple: capacity without subsidy.
Mira's Crucible
His first recruit, Mira Talon, stood at the top of the Iron Descent. Her usually fluid Aetherflow was held tightly in check, her posture tense with apprehension.
"My instructor told me this protocol is a rumor designed to scare Flow users into compliance," she challenged. "Prove him wrong, Hollow".
Jax handed her a simple, non-conductive wristband. "The Ascendancy Protocol isn't about compliance," he said. "It's about honesty. Your Flow is based on instinct and emotion, which the city always rewards. Here, we remove the city. You pay the tax".
The first drill was simple: descend the shaft without any Flow assistance.
* The Flaw Exposed: Mira pushed off, plummeted ten feet, and hit the landing with a sickening thud. Her aura spiked crimson with pain and humiliation before she forcibly suppressed it. She was completely reliant on the RCN's rhythmic support.
* The Lesson: "Your body is used to the academy's constant rhythm lifting you," Jax instructed, offering no hand. "You have to mentally calculate the fall, find the center of mass, and arrest the momentum with pure muscle and attention". Mira slowly got up, beginning the grueling process of converting her Flow instinct into pure, unsubsidized muscle.
Ryen's Reckoning
Ryen Yun appeared during Mira's second hour of descent, leaning against a neutral wall. His elegant Luminarch bracers were a stark contrast to the dust and raw effort below.
"The ghost surfaces," Ryen observed, his smile edged with professional curiosity. "I heard the Council confined you to concrete. Suits the Nullborn, doesn't it? Back to where power doesn't matter".
Jax countered, "Power always matters. You just don't know the capacity of yours until the city stops holding your hand".
Ryen abandoned the taunts, cutting to the core: "I need to understand the Null-kinetic shift you used to beat me. You achieved speed by subtracting mass, not adding force. That's not a discipline; it's a cheat code".
Jax took Ryen's complex Luminarch data pad and sketched the Comma Mark intersecting a straight line.
> "Your Luminarch threads trace the trajectory," Jax explained. "My Null shifts the point of origin, creating a momentary absence of mass at the point of action. When I move, I'm not pushing off the ground; I'm briefly erasing the friction holding me there. It's an attention tax paid with pure focus, not a flow deposit".
>
Ryen's face registered dawning comprehension. "You're using Null as a policy change for localized reality". He left, clutching the pad, his intense, secret training beginning immediately.
The Unranked Departure
Jax was later joined by Lenn, the scrawny, overlooked Veil Assembly student. Lenn's unique talent was functionally erasing his resonant signature—the ability to be unseen.
"Your task isn't to be invisible, but to be unseen—to master the art of moving between the city's beats. No power allowed," Jax instructed.
The team loaded their Null-dampened Anchor—a four-foot cube of inert quartz-granite—onto an ancient, combustion-powered Ground-Crawler.
Jax, Kara, Mira, and Lenn—the four non-ranked liabilities—stood at the mouth of the maintenance tunnel. Coach Aroha waited for them, her Flow suppressed out of respect.
> "The Continental Echo is not uniform. It is raw, primal Aetherflow... It will try to pull on your deepest weakness," Aroha warned. "It will try to make you harmonize with its power... The Ascendancy Protocol is your only shield, Hollow. Stay unsubsidized".

Jax nodded, leading his team out of Auralis Academy and onto the cold, damp asphalt of the surface world. The noise of the engine cut through the fading city hum—a crude, defiant anti-rhythm.
We are now outside the RCN. The mission is underway, and the f
irst major test is imminent.
