Chapter 87 - Volume 2, Chapter 21: The Turning Tides of Fury

The temporary silence that had blanketed the western plaza dissolved like morning mist under a scorching sun. Whitebeard's monumental declaration of forgiveness had not softened the battlefield; it had set it on fire. The psychological trap orchestrated by the Marine headquarters had backfired spectacularly, transforming a disillusioned pirate fleet into an absolute juggernaut of unified, unadulterated rage.

"Pops gave us our march!" "Water Buffalo" Atmos roared, his armored frame shaking as his twin giant broadswords hummed with an intense, ink-black layer of high-grade Armament Haki. "Clear the path! For Ace! For the New World!"

"Ohoo!" the surrounding pirate divisions bellowed, a terrifying, wave-like chorus that shook the frost right off the landscape.

Before the sea of howling pirates could swallow the defensive line, Vice Admiral Momonga stepped forward, his standard Marine katana entering a traditional, high-profile stance. His face remained a mask of absolute, stoic discipline, but his sharp eyes were constantly calculating the rapid shift in enemy density.

"Maintain the structural geometry!" Momonga commanded, his voice cutting cleanly through the roaring battle cry. "Tenjin, Grus! They are rushing with blind momentum. Isolate the vanguard!"

"Right!" Tenjin barked.

Relying entirely on his ground-based footwork, Tenjin slammed his boots onto the fractured ice. The dense, Dead Wood fibers wrapped around his thighs and calves coiled tightly like heavily pressurized steel springs. With a sharp hiss, a thick plume of green steam erupted from his heels, the compressed wood properties forcing an artificial, supersonic acceleration.

BOOM!

Tenjin blurred across the plaza, his boots tearing deep trenches through the frost as he intercepted Namur, the 8th Division Commander. The Fish-Man commander lunged forward with terrifying physical speed, his powerful jaws snapping shut with enough raw force to crush steel plating. Tenjin twisted his torso with millimeter precision, the wind of Namur's bite ripping away a section of his matted green hair, before bringing his right arm around in a high-speed, horizontal sweep. The timber expanded exponentially into a dense, spiked battering ram. "Dead Wood Rush!"

Namur caught the incoming wooden beam with both webbed hands, his massive arm muscles flexing as he ground his heels into the ice to absorb the titanic kinetic force. "You're fast, Marine brat! But your wood isn't dense enough to crush a warrior of the sea!" With a feral grunt, Namur utilized his immense Fish-Man strength to physically lift the massive log, aiming a devastating, Haki-infused roundhouse kick straight at Tenjin's exposed ribcage.

"I didn't say I was done!" Tenjin yelled, his hyperactive energy flaring as he utilized his compressed leg springs to rapidly slide backward along the ice, turning his expanding arm into loose, flexible root tendrils that wrapped around Namur's ankle to disrupt his balance.

Simultaneously, a massive shadow fell over Prince Grus. Blamenco, the 6th Division Commander, lunged from a fractured ridge of ice, his hands gripping the handle of his comically massive wooden mallet. The weapon was completely enveloped in a swirling vortex of high-grade Armament Haki, carrying enough crushing pressure to flatten a Marine battleship.

"Die, rookie!" Blamenco shrieked, bringing the colossal mallet down with descending, cataclysmic force.

Grus's narrow eyes sharpened beneath the tilted brim of his Marine cap. He didn't panic, his characteristic gloom-ridden expression hardening into pure, tactical focus. He slammed both palms heavily against the frozen ground, his Devil Fruit powers pulling vast quantities of gray clay from the subterranean debris.

"Clay Phalanx: Bunker Shield!" Grus muttered coldly.

An immense, multi-layered dome of densely reinforced gray clay erupted from the ice, structured with internal shock-absorbing pillars to maximize its structural density.

SMASH!!!

The impact detonated with the sound of a heavy artillery shell. Blamenco's Haki-clad mallet collided dead-on with the apex of the clay bunker. The outermost layers of the dome instantly pulverized into loose gray mud, and deep, web-like fractures raced down the clay pillars. Grus groaned through his teeth, a trickle of blood escaping his lip from the sheer kinetic feedback, but the structural integrity held. The bunker successfully absorbed the entirety of the Emperor commander's crushing blow, keeping the surrounding Marine trainees safe from the vacuum wave.

"Tsk... impressive density," Blamenco grunted, yanking his mallet back to reset his posture. "But let's see how many of those toys you can mold before your stamina bottoms out!"

While the two elite trainees were engaged in their respective battles of attrition, Vice Admiral Momonga was executing a masterclass in top-tier warfare against the remaining two commanders. He stood alone against Atmos and Blenheim, a single Marine blade matching the simultaneous, heavy onslaught of three high-grade swords.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

Atmos swung his twin broadswords in a relentless, synchronized cross-slash, while Blenheim's massive cutlass lunged from the blind spot, targeting Momonga's vital organs with terrifying, veteran efficiency. Momonga moved like a silver streak, his footwork displaying the absolute peak of traditional Marine swordplay. He utilized short, perfect parrying arcs, deflecting Atmos's heavy blades outward before executing a mid-air twist to catch the tip of Blenheim's cutlass against the flat of his Haki-coated steel.

The sparks flying from their locked weapons illuminated the plaza like a frantic fireworks display. Momonga was single-handedly absorbing the brutal, hyper-motivated offensive output of two New World veterans, his face remaining completely placid despite the immense pressure. Yet, as the seconds ticked away, the sheer volume of the enemy numbers began to tell. The pirate divisions behind the commanders were advancing like a black tide, spilling over the flanks and threatening to completely isolate the three Marines.

High above the chaotic plaza, standing firmly on the main deck of the flagship, Edward Newgate raised his massive bisento. The white fabric of his coat coat was stained with the fresh crimson blood pooling from the wound in his chest, but his posture remained entirely unyielding, a towering monument of absolute authority.

He looked out over the sprawling battlefield, his deep, weathered voice gathering a monstrous resonance that echoed from the shorelines to the execution platform.

"Listen up, my sons!" Whitebeard rumbled, his words cutting through the roars of the cannons. "We have no more use for this frozen bay! Throw everything you have into the main plaza! We are going to crush their defenses and take Ace back! Follow me to the end of the world!"

"Ohoooo!!!"

The command acted as a cataclysmic catalyst. The allied pirate crews, completely erased of any lingering doubt or suspicion, launched into a furious, unhinged offensive.

Amongst them, Squard stood on the bow of his giant paddle ship, tears streaming down his face as his features distorted into a mask of absolute, weeping despair and guilt. The weight of his horrific mistake. The realization that he had pierced the heart of the father who loved him was suffocating his sanity.

"Pops! Everyone!" Squard screamed, his voice cracking with raw agony as he gripped the steering wheel of his vessel with a manic strength. "I was a fool! A blind, pathetic idiot! Let me use my life to clear the way for my brothers! I will be your shield!"

With a sudden, roaring activation of its engines, Squard's massive ship surged forward, grinding heavily over the frozen ice sheets. The sheer, colossal weight of the hull acted as a massive, armored ram, plowing directly through the outermost Marine fortifications and crushing rows of defensive cannons into scrap metal. The ship wedged itself tightly into a major fissure, creating a massive, improvised bridge that allowed thousands of New World pirates to bypass the tactical choke points and pour directly into the plaza.

"They're breaking through the western gate!" a Marine scout shrieked into his transponder snail. "The pirate numbers has reached critical levels! We can't hold the perimeter!"

Down on the ice, Momonga executed a sharp upward slash, the compressed wind from his blade forcing Blenheim to step back. He quickly scanned the shifting landscape, seeing Squard's ship providing a direct highway for the enemy numbers. The tactical geometry of the western plaza had been entirely compromised. Remaining here meant complete encirclement and annihilation.

"Tenjin! Grus! Break off the engagement immediately!" Momonga commanded, his voice carrying an absolute, military authority as he stepped back into a defensive retreat. "The Fleet Admiral's strategy has entered its final phase. We are ordering a tactical retreat toward the inner plaza!"

Tenjin delivered a heavy, pressurized kick from his Dead Wood leg springs, forcing Namur back a few paces as green steam hissed violently from his shoulders. His green hair was matted with sweat, his breathing heavy as he looked at the massive influx of enemies crossing Squard's ship. "Retreat?! We just started pushing them back, Vice Admiral!"

"Do not query a direct command, Captain!" Momonga snapped, his blade deflecting a stray rifle shot with absolute precision as he began to fall back toward the inner walls. "Our primary objective is to lure their main force deep into the center of the bay. The execution trap requires their density to be concentrated. Move!"

Grus quickly dissolved his clay golem into a massive, sliding wave of mud, using the fluid substance to sweep the remaining elite trainees back along the retreat path. "Follow the anchor, plant-boy. If we get isolated here, we become nothing more than a statistical casualty."

"Tsk... fine!" Tenjin muttered, his fists clenching as his competitive fire flared against the necessity of the retreat. He turned on his heel, his boots tearing across the frost as he synchronized his pace with Momonga and Grus, leading the trainees back toward the inner plaza.

Behind them, Atmos, Namur, Blenheim, and Blamenco raised their weapons, leading the howling vanguard of thousands of pirates as they chased the retreating Marines straight into the jaws of the World Government's ultimate execution trap.
