Chapter 285 - Arsenal of Europe

Paris, FranceSummer 1853

Paris no longer sounded like a capital at peace.

The city sounded industrial.

Even before sunrise, the distant whistles of locomotives echoed across the outskirts while smoke drifted above factories lining the growing industrial districts beyond the old heart of the city. Freight trains rolled constantly through the rail terminals carrying coal from the Ruhr, steel from eastern foundries, machinery from Saint-Étienne, and industrial goods bound for ports across the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

The city still carried beauty.

Grand boulevards.

Stone buildings.

Palaces.

Churches.

Cafés filled with politicians and aristocrats.

But beneath all of it, another Paris had emerged.

A mechanical Paris.

A city tied together by railways, steel, steam, and industry.

And increasingly, Europe revolved around it.

Inside the Ministry of War near central Paris, the atmosphere felt heavier than usual.
