Chapter 284 - The Weight of Steel

Versailles, FranceSpring 1853

The Empire had become too large to remain quiet.

That was what many foreign diplomats realized the moment they arrived in France now.

Everywhere they traveled, they saw movement.

Railroads crossing the countryside endlessly.

Factories expanding beside rivers and industrial corridors.

Steel mills burning through the night.

Locomotives carrying coal, machinery, troops, and raw materials across thousands of kilometers without pause.

The French Empire no longer felt like a traditional European power built purely on dynasties and armies.

It felt industrial.

Mechanical.

Alive.

And increasingly, that frightened the rest of Europe.

Morning fog covered parts of Versailles while distant train whistles echoed faintly across the countryside beyond the palace grounds. Servants moved through the halls carrying stacks of industrial reports and diplomatic correspondence between ministries that barely seemed to rest anymore.
