Darkness closed in, thick and absolute.
Scarlett could hear her own heartbeat, sharp and uneven, filling the silence between each approaching step. It felt too loud. Too exposed. Like it might give them away even without light.
Julian did not move.
But his hand tightened around hers, firm and steady, anchoring her in place.
"Listen to me," he said under his breath. "Whatever happens, you do not let go of me."
Her fingers curled tighter around his.
"I will not," she whispered.
Another step echoed.
Closer.
Not rushing. Not careless.
Deliberate.
Whoever they were, they were not afraid.
Julian shifted slightly, positioning himself between her and the sound. Scarlett could feel the tension in him, coiled and ready, like something waiting to snap.
A faint click broke through the silence.
Then another.
Scarlett's breath caught.
"What is that?" she whispered.
Julian's voice dropped lower.
"Doors."
Her chest tightened.
"They are sealing the exits."
