Chapter 169 - Chapter 169: The Obsidian Swarm

"What is that?!" Xiao Yu yelled, landing heavily on her designated branch.

The screeching sound magnified exponentially. It wasn't just one. The fog around them seemed to vibrate with a thousand scraping glass shards.

Yoriichi's eyes widened as his Transparent World vision caught up with the rapidly moving, cold-blooded circulatory systems swarming through the haze.

"Take a defensive position!" Yoriichi shouted, his hand blurring to the hilt of his katana. "It is the Obsidian-Winged Dragonfly! And they never travel alone. They hunt in swarms!"

Before the warning could fully register, the fog was violently torn apart.

A massive swarm of horrifying, three-foot-long insects descended upon them. Their bodies were plated in dark, chitinous armor, but their true terror lay in their four massive wings. They weren't made of biological membrane; they were composed of a naturally occurring, razor-sharp obsidian-like crystal. When they beat their wings, they literally sliced the air, creating the horrifying glass-scraping sound.

"They are mostly Rank 1!" Yoriichi analyzed rapidly, stepping in front of Xiao Yu. "Do not let their wings touch your vital arteries!"

The swarm, recognizing the intruders, launched their attack. Dozens of the terrifying dragonflies dive-bombed the siblings, their obsidian wings extended like spinning buzzsaws.

Yoriichi inhaled a massive, pressurized breath of the humid air, his lungs expanding as he ignited his Dou Qi.

Haaah...

"Sun Breathing. Ninth Form....." Yoriichi whispered, drawing his blade in a blinding flash of crimson-gold fire.

He didn't just slash; he moved. Yoriichi leaped directly into the air, completely abandoning the safety of the branch. He initiated the Dragon Sun Halo Dance, moving in a continuous, high-speed zig-zag pattern through the humid air.

With every step he took upon the empty space—using brief bursts of Dou Qi to launch himself—his flaming katana carved a continuous, flowing arc. A massive, roaring dragon of solar fire manifested around him, instantly superheating the wetland fog.

SKREEEEE!

The Obsidian-Winged Dragonflies that entered the dragon's path were instantly subjected to extreme thermal shock. The intense, purifying heat of the Sun-Steel blade shattered their crystal wings into thousands of pieces, instantly scorching their biological bodies to ash. Flaming insect corpses rained down, splashing into the murky water below.

Simultaneously, Xiao Yu was not idle.

She coated her entire azure whip in her frosty-silver liquid Dou Qi. The temperature around her branch plummeted instantly. She moved with ruthless efficiency, lashing her whip in a rapid, jagged pattern, creating an impenetrable web of freezing kinetic strikes.

Whenever a dragonfly attempted to flank Yoriichi and dive at her, her whip would strike. The extreme Yin cold instantly froze their joints, causing their high-speed, vibrating wings to lock up and shatter violently against the air pressure, sending them plummeting to the swamp floor.

The fight devolved into a chaotic, high-speed battle of attrition.

The sheer volume of the swarm was overwhelming. For the time it takes an incense stick to burn, the canopy was a blinding hurricane of solar fire, freezing silver flashes, and shattering black glass.

Because of the sheer numbers, perfection was impossible. A few of the razor-sharp wings managed to slip past their defenses. Yoriichi felt a sharp sting as an obsidian wing grazed his left cheek and sliced a shallow line across his forearm. Xiao Yu grunted in pain as one of the beasts managed to clip her shoulder, and drawing a thin line of blood.

However, magical beasts possessed a primal intelligence. After losing nearly fifty members of their swarm to the terrifying combination of extreme fire and absolute ice, the remaining insects realized this prey was far too prickly to consume.

With a unified, echoing screech of frustration, the swarm abruptly changed direction, diving upward into the thick canopy and vanishing completely into the fog, leaving behind nothing but the smell of burnt chitin and freezing mist.

Yoriichi and Xiao Yu, exhausted from the continuous, high-output expenditure of their Dou Qi, simultaneously dropped down from the canopy.

Splash. Splash.

They landed heavily in the ankle-deep water below, leaning their backs against the wide, mossy trunk of a massive mangrove tree.

Yoriichi exhaled a long, measured breath, letting the blazing crimson heat recede from his blade before sheathing it with a soft click. He glanced at his forearm and cheek. The minor, glass-like scratches had already stopped bleeding; his Peak Nine-Star Dou Zhe physique possessed an incredible cellular clotting rate.

He looked over at Xiao Yu. She was panting softly, checking the scratch on her shoulder, which had been instantly sealed by a thin, painless layer of her own frost Dou Qi.

"Are you injured?" Yoriichi asked, his voice returning to its calm, stoic baseline.

"No," Xiao Yu shook her head, wiping a bead of sweat from her brow. "Just scratches. Those wings were like flying swords. If my Dou Shi cloak hadn't reflexively formed, my arm would have been severed."

"A perfect tempering exercise," Yoriichi noted pragmatically, his breathing returning to normal. "Our reaction speeds have successfully adapted to group-assault dynamics."

They leaned against the tree, breathing cautiously, taking a brief, hard-earned moment of respite in the sweltering heat. The silence of the wetlands rushed back in, broken only by the bubbling of distant mud vents.

But the Blistering Haze Wetlands were an unforgiving, treacherous hellscape that never truly slept.

While they were catching their breath, a sudden, unnatural phenomenon occurred in the dense fog directly in front of them. About fifteen feet away, beneath the murky, opaque surface of the ankle-deep water, a brilliant, hypnotic neon-blue light flashed.

Xiao Yu blinked, her eyes drawn to the beautiful, shifting glow. "What is..."

BANG!

The shallow water completely exploded upward.

It wasn't ankle-deep. The puddle they were standing next to was the mouth of a massive, hidden sinkhole.

A horrifying, serpentine beast—at least fifteen feet long, covered in thick, dark-green scales with a bio-luminescent neon lure dangling from its head—launched itself entirely out of the water like a released spring. Its jaws unhinged to a grotesque degree, revealing rows of translucent, needle-like fangs dripping with acidic venom.

The beast moved with the silent, terrifying velocity of a Rank 3 predator, lunging directly at their faces to swallow them whole.

It was inches away. The smell of rotting fish and acidic venom washed over their faces.

SHING!

In a display of physical speed that defied all logic, Yoriichi didn't even draw his blade fully. He unsheathed the Katana just three inches, violently slamming the thick, lacquered wooden scabbard and the exposed steel guard horizontally across the serpentine beast's open, descending upper jaw.

CRACK!

The sheer, explosive kinetic force of Yoriichi's block met the descending weight of the serpent. The air pressure ruptured between them, kicking up a massive wave of swamp water as Yoriichi gritted his teeth, his boots sinking deep into the mud, forcefully pushing the horrifying beast back into the fog.
