Chapter 168 - Chapter 168: The Blistering Haze

Three days of relentless, brutal navigation passed since Yoriichi and Xiao Yu departed from the sanctuary of the hidden waterfall cave.

Their objective was clear: before returning to Jia Nan Academy, they needed absolute, life-or-death pressure to hammer their rapidly inflated cultivation foundations into solid steel. A Peak Nine-Star Dou Zhe and a newly advanced One-Star Dou Shi were formidable, but rapid growth without combat tempering was akin to building a massive fortress on a foundation of loose sand.

As they pushed past the southern borders of the Abyssal Trench, the towering, ancient oaks and dense razor-ferns began to thin out, seamlessly giving way to an entirely different ecological nightmare.

The temperature spiked drastically, transforming the cool, miasma-filled air into a suffocating, hyper-humid sauna. The solid, earthy ground beneath their boots transitioned into ankle-deep, lukewarm water. Irregular, twisted mangrove-like trees with massive, sprawling root systems jutted out of the flooded earth at strange angles.

But the most defining feature of this new landscape was the fog.

It wasn't a natural mist. It was a thick, cloying, sulfur-scented haze that completely blanketed the area, reducing visibility to less than ten feet. The air was perpetually filled with the eerie, intermittent hissing of underground geological activity.

"The Blistering Haze Wetlands," Yoriichi noted quietly, his boots causing soft ripples in the murky water.

He suddenly stopped near the base of a massive, gnarled tree root. Crouching low, Yoriichi closed his eyes, extending his Transparent World vision through the opaque, swirling fog. He bypassed the visual obstruction of the haze, scanning the intricate flow of life force in the surrounding mile.

"There," Yoriichi whispered, his crimson eyes opening. He pointed slightly to his left. "About four hundred yards in that direction. The muscular density and Dou Qi circulation are highly condensed. It is a Rank 2 beast... no, wait. The circulatory flow is mutating. It is a borderline to Rank 3."

He turned his head slowly, looking back at his sister. "Do you want to use it to stabilize your new liquid Dou Qi?"

Before Yoriichi could even fully turn his body, Xiao Yu's eyes violently contracted. Her newly awakening granted her an acute, almost precognitive sensitivity to extreme thermal fluctuations.

"Ning'er, move!"

Xiao Yu didn't hesitate. She lunged forward, slamming both of her hands against Yoriichi's shoulder, forcefully shoving his crouched figure several feet away. The sheer physical force of a Dou Shi sent him skidding across the shallow water.

Simultaneously, Xiao Yu pushed off her back foot, executing a flawless backward aerial flip.

FSSSHHHHH!

The exact spot where Yoriichi had been crouching a millisecond prior violently erupted. The shallow, murky water blew apart as a geyser of hyper-pressurized, boiling steam shot thirty feet into the air. The sheer thermal kinetic force of the eruption stripped the bark completely off the nearby mangrove root, leaving the wood scorched and blistered.

Yoriichi landed smoothly on his feet a few yards away, his expression remaining perfectly stoic as he watched the boiling geyser slowly subside into a bubbling mud pit. With his physical tempering and the natural heat resistance, the steam wouldn't have killed him, but it undoubtedly would have caused severe, agonizing third-degree burns across his exposed skin.

He heaved a soft sigh, brushing a few droplets of boiling water off his dark robes.

"Truly, the Blistering Haze Wetlands live up to their name," Yoriichi murmured, acknowledging the lethal geography.

He immediately dodged to the right as another, smaller vent of steam hissed from the water just inches from his boot. Deciding the ground was a literal minefield, he channeled a burst of Dou Qi into his legs and leaped upward, landing silently on a thick, horizontal tree branch fifteen feet above the water.

Xiao Yu blurred through the fog, landing gracefully on the branch right beside him. Her breath was slightly elevated, a faint sheen of icy Dou Qi passively coating her clothes to repel the oppressive, humid heat.

"Be careful," Xiao Yu told him, her eyes scanning the bubbling water below. "The ground here is completely unstable. The thermal vents are shifting constantly."

Yoriichi nodded in agreement. He looked at the treacherous, fog-choked swamp stretching out endlessly before them.

"Yu," Yoriichi began hesitantly, his crimson eyes locking onto hers. "There is still time to turn back and exit the wetlands. This landscape is incredibly difficult to navigate. The fog blinds us, and the steam masks the scent of predators."

He pointed down at the ankle-deep, opaque water below them. "More importantly, the water level is an illusion. We do not know when a simple, foot-deep puddle will suddenly drop into a fifty-foot deep underwater sinkhole, hiding an aquatic beast waiting for us to stumble. It is a tactical disadvantage in every conceivable metric."

Xiao Yu looked at the bubbling swamp, her silver hair clinging slightly to her neck from the humidity. She knew he was right. The danger here was environmental, not just predatory.

"Hmm, I know," Xiao Yu replied, her voice firm and resolute. She tightened her grip on her coiled azure whip. "But we still need to go forward since we have come this far. My dantian is still sloshing wildly; it needs the pressure of a true battle to solidify. And your Peak Nine-Star realm is overflowing. If we retreat to the safe zones now, our foundations will crack from the lack of tempering."

Yoriichi analyzed her unwavering determination. She had truly evolved from a sheltered academy student into a hardened warrior of the continent.

"Hm. Very well," Yoriichi conceded, a faint spark of pride in his eyes. "Then we cannot risk the thermal vents on the ground. Let us proceed by jumping through the canopy. We will track the borderline Rank 3 beast from the trees."

They immediately began to move.

Swish! Swish!

The two siblings blurred through the upper canopy of the twisted mangrove trees. They leaped back and forth from branch to branch, moving in a synchronized, staggered formation. The fog was slightly thinner up high, but the humidity made the thick, moss-covered branches incredibly slippery, demanding absolute physical control and Dou Qi regulation for every single step.

They navigated the canopy for several minutes, slowly closing the distance toward the powerful aura Yoriichi had detected.

Suddenly, a bizarre, unnatural sound pierced through the ambient hissing of the wetlands.

Screee... chink... screee...

It sounded exactly like shards of broken glass scraping violently against one another.

Xiao Yu, who was currently mid-air jumping to a neighboring tree, felt the hair on the back of her neck stand up. A dark, jagged silhouette abruptly materialized from the thick fog, diving directly at her throat at a terrifying, blinding speed.

Acting entirely on instinct, she snapped her wrist. Her azure whip cracked through the humid air, striking the silhouette perfectly in mid-air.

CLINK!

Instead of the soft thud of flesh, the impact produced a loud, ringing sound of metal striking tempered glass. The creature recoiled, its trajectory violently thrown off, and crashed into a tree trunk.
