Daigo, standing in the center of the crater, felt the adrenaline begin to leave his body, giving way to a dull, throbbing pain that originated in his burned nerve endings.
With an effort that made every muscle ache, Daigo extended a trembling hand toward Rasa.
There was no trace of arrogance in his eyes; only the recognition of a warrior who had been pushed to the limit by an equal.
Rasa, with his jaw still dislocated and his gaze lost in the vastness of the sky, took his victor's hand. As he pulled him up, Daigo felt the true weight of responsibility: he was no longer responsible just for his own life, but for the life of that man and for everyone living behind the village walls.
Before they could take ten steps toward the village gates, four figures with porcelain masks and tactical uniforms appeared in a burst of speed, surrounding them in a perfect defensive formation.
The Sand ANBU, the Kazekage's personal elite ninjas, knelt in unison, sinking their knees into the scorching sand.
"Lord Kazekage," said the squad captain, whose crow mask hid all emotion.
"The village has witnessed your victory. Allow us to escort you and Rasa to the hospital immediately"
"You can take Rasa i get on my own to the hospital late" Daigo said with a majestic brevity, handing Rasa's weight over to the guards.
His eyes met those of his former rival for one last second.
Rasa nodded slightly a nearly imperceptible gesture of submission and respect, before being carried away in a blur of the Body Flicker Technique.
Only then did Daigo allow himself to falter.
As he reached the main gates, Chiyo and Ebizō were waiting for him. The counselor, known for her cynicism and toughness, had her hands tightly interlaced.
"You are a mess, boy," Chiyo commented, though her voice lacked its usual bite. Her eyes scanned Daigo's burns with a mixture of concern and maternal pride.
"Your chakra coils are overheated and your skin is raw. To the hospital, right now. I won't allow the Fourth Kazekage to die of an infection on his first day."
"There is no time for hospital beds, Grandma Chiyo," Daigo replied, his voice resonating with a strange tranquility. "The people of Suna need to celebrate this day, so prepare the congregation immediately. I will go to the tower, clean myself up, and put on the official robes. Pain is temporary."
Ebizō sighed, recognizing in Daigo the same stubbornness that made the previous Kazekages great.
"Then so be it. But don't expect the doctors to be kind to you during the preparations."
Inside the Kazekage Tower, the chaos was organized. While the banners were being installed and the podium was being prepared outside, Daigo was subjected to brutal treatment in the leader's private quarters.
A team of three nurses and a medical ninja worked against the clock. They used water to clean the remains of sand and blood from his wounds a process that made Daigo clench his fists until his knuckles turned white from the burning sensation.
They applied thick ointments made from desert herbs and healing extracts, designed to regenerate burned tissue at an accelerated rate.
Then, they wrapped his torso and arms in pristine white bandages. To ensure he didn't stain his clothes and to keep him
comfortable while walking, they also placed a new patch over his eye.
Even with the burns on his face, he could endure the pain.
Over the bandages, they placed the formal robes: a heavy silk garment white and blue tones, with the kanji for "Wind" embroidered on the back.
Looking in the mirror, Daigo barely recognized the young man who had woken up that morning.
His real eye shone with a new intensity, and his crystal eye, covered by a patch, was ready to be presented to his people.
While Daigo was being prepared for the congregation,
the atmosphere at the Daigo family residence was very different. Haru and Ilsa shared a hurried dinner with Sasori and Pakura. Haru, normally a man of many words, remained in silence, processing the fact that his son was now the most important man in the village. Ilsa, for her part, tried to maintain her composure, though her hands trembled as she held her chopsticks.
Pakura had barely eaten a bite. Her mind was still on the battle in the desert, reliving the moment the pyramid exploded. She felt a mixture of searing relief and an anxiety she couldn't explain. She looked at Sasori, who was eating as if nothing affected him, enjoying the meal.
"You should eat something, Pakura," Sasori said without looking up. "The congregation will start soon, and we don't know how long it will take. Besides, you wouldn't want to miss the day Daigo receives the Kazekage hat, right?"
Pakura nodded and began to eat. A short while later, the village bells began to ring. It was the signal.
The waiting was over.
Thousand of people crowded the plaza in front of the Kazekage Tower. The murmur of the crowd was like the sound of a distant tide.
The Third Kazekage was the first to step out onto the balcony. His presence was imposing, but the fatigue was visible in his shoulders the weight of a war that had taken too much from him.
"Citizens of Sunagakure!" began the Third, his voice projected by wind jutsus to every corner of the village.
"For years, I have walked with you through the deserts. I have seen our citizens fall and our dunes turn red. My time as your shield has come to an end due to the wounds that war engraved upon my body.
But I do not leave with sadness, but with the certainty that we leave our will in the hands of someone who has not only mastered the sand, but has mastered his own destiny.
I hope you receive him and treat him as you did me with all your support for his actions and that he leads Sunagakure to heights I could not reach."
The crowd fell into a silence so deep that the flapping of the flags could be heard.
"I present to you, your Fourth Kazekage, Daigo!"
Daigo stepped into the light. The crowd roared, a deafening sound that seemed to shake the very ground the village was built upon.
He walked toward the Third, who held the blue and white Kazekage hat. The ritual was brief but heavy with meaning.
The Third placed the hat on Daigo's head and stepped back, yielding the center of the stage.Daigo approached the edge of the balcony.
He imbued his voice with a precise amount of chakra, making his words not just heard, but felt in the chests of those present.
"Village of Sunagakure," Daigo began, his voice clear and firm.
"Many see these bandages and think the path to this hat was one of personal sacrifice. And it was. But the sacrifice does not end here. For generations, we have been told that Suna is a poor village, a village that must settle for the scraps of the other Great Nations because our soil is sterile. I tell you that is a lie!"
A shout of approval erupted from the crowd excited about his next words
"Our strength does not lie in the fertility of our land, but in the toughness of our people. From this day forward, Sunagakure will change its course.
We will not just be a military power that sells its blood to the highest bidder. We will invest in irrigation technology, in trade routes that connect the desert to the world, and in an economy that does not depend on the whims of feudal lords.
My goal is not just to win wars; my goal is that no child in Suna ever goes hungry or feels that their village is inferior."
He paused, letting his words sink in.
"As for the war... we will not seek it, but we will not fear it. Those who think Suna is weak because of its change in leadership will find in me and my ninjas an answer of crystal and winds. We are not a village that survives. We are the village that will lead!"
Another shout of approval erupted from the crowd more loudly
"Before I step down and let you celebrate your new Kazekage, I want to let you know that thanks to our ninjas and my command, we managed to secure a very important city in the Land of Fire, along with a territory.
If things continue this way, it will no longer be part of Fire, but part of the Wind. Now, have a good day!"
With that, Daigo gave a bow and retired from the podium along with the others, leaving the city to celebrate.
The explosion of joy was so great that the desert birds took flight miles away. Daigo's name was chanted by thousands a single voice proclaiming the start of a golden age.
Hours later, the sun had set behind the dunes and the Kazekage's office was submerged in a dim light.
Daigo was sitting behind the enormous oak desk, surrounded by maps and state scrolls.
He let out a long sigh, allowing his back to relax against the backrest. The pain from the burns was now a constant pulse a reminder that they hadn't been healed because he wanted to act tough and hold the congregation.
The door opened softly. His parents, Haru and Ilsa, entered first, followed by Chiyo, Ebizō, and a Sasori who observed the office with curiosity. Pakura entered last, staying a step behind.
The congratulations were brief but deep. Haru give him a big hug a gesture that said more than any speech also celebrating him for using the six breath.
Ilsa hugged him with infinite tenderness, avoiding any pressure on the bandages.
Chiyo and Ebizō gave him the first logistical reports before retiring, recognizing that the new leader needed a moment of rest.
Soon, the room emptied, leaving only Daigo and Pakura. The tension between them was almost tangible, a thread of electricity
connecting their breaths.
For a long minute, neither spoke. The silence was dense, filled with words unspoken on battlefields, in training nights, or the times they spent together in Kanzaki.
"Daigo..." Pakura whispered, breaking the spell.
"Pakura..." he replied at the same time.
Both smiled, a small, tired laugh that dissipated the formality of the office.
Daigo slowly rose from the chair, ignoring the stabs of pain in his wounds, and walked toward her.
Pakura, the woman who could incinerate an entire battalion without blinking, was visibly nervous, her cheeks flushed with a soft crimson as she looked away.
Daigo simply raised his hand, bringing it to her face. With a soft touch, he turned her so she would look at him.
Daigo's pink eye met Pakura's brown eyes.
Pakura was the first to speak.
"I almost lost you today," she said, her voice trembling slightly as her eyes remained fixed on his. "When I saw the pyramid form and Rasa's jutsu finish, I thought you were dead. Don't ever do that to me again. Don't ever scare me like that."
Daigo took her hands, which were cold despite the desert heat, and pulled her toward him.
"Relax, it's over now. Rasa had me on the verge of losing; he surprised me, but you know I have many tricks up my sleeve," he said, lowering his voice until only she could hear him.
"Besides... I couldn't let anyone else take care of Suna... and I certainly couldn't let anyone else take care of you."
At those words, Pakura looked up, seeing Daigo's smiling face.
"You know, since as far back as I can remember, it was always about training and becoming strong for when this moment arrived...
to be the Kazekage, the plan was already made, and to lead the village to the top. But during that process, I met you."
Daigo paused, moving with her toward the tower balcony.
"I remember that first meeting was six years ago. You almost killed me with your Shakuton for using your training ground, but in the end, you let us use it.
Little by little, we trained together, and later we even created the Shoton together," Daigo continued, now looking out at the desert expanding beyond.
"And during the battle against Mangetsu where I almost died, I thought of many things... but through it all, you were always there. That's when I realized that I didn't want to build this Suna alone, I wanted to do it with you."
Daigo turned to look at her again.
"Pakura, I've realized that I love you. Will you be my girlfriend?" Daigo asked, looking into her eyes.
There was a second where nothing seemed to move.
In Daigo's mind, a thousand thoughts raced, doubts and imaginings, until reality forced its way back.
And Pakura didn't answer with words. She leaned forward and closed the distance, sealing her lips with his.
It was a kiss that tasted of victory, of relief, and of a promise for the future.
In that office, under the moonlight hitting the balcony, the Fourth Kazekage understood that today he hadn't just conquered Suna... he had conquered Pakura as well.
"I did it Todo Sensei," was Daigo's final thought after the kiss ended.
