The silence that followed the partial destruction of the crystal dome was not a relief, but a pause of pure terror.
The air on the Kanzaki battlefield had grown thick, charged with a static electricity that made the hair on the ninjas' arms stand up even miles away.
In the center of this epicenter of chaos, Daigo remained standing.
Before him, the figure of Kushina Uzumaki no longer held a trace of the woman she used to be. The red chakra of the Nine-Tails erupted from her body like boiling lava, bubbling and hissing upon contact with the cold morning air. It was a dark energy, so ancient and heavy that it seemed to sink the ground beneath her feet.
Daigo completed the sequence of hand seals he had begun. His fingers moved with precision, molding the Shōton chakra in a way never before seen in the ninja records of any village.
"Shōton: Crystalline Imprisonment Chains."
With a crystalline roar that seemed to emerge from the very bowels of the earth, the ground exploded. From the depths, two chains of pink crystal emerged thick and segmented.
Unlike the famous Adamantine Chains of the Uzumaki clan, which shimmered with golden light and flowed like liquid silk, Daigo's chains were brutal and rigid.
They lacked the flexibility of the Uzumaki version, but the razor-sharp crystal edges placed them on an equally dangerous level.
Daigo launched the chains with a whip-like motion. He didn't seek to trap Kushina directly yet; he used them as tactical anchor points. They allowed him to pull himself through the air via chakra tension, avoiding the Jinchūriki's initial lunges with almost inhuman agility.
"Your chains are impressive, Kushina the legacy of a clan that the other three great villages had to unite just to defeat," Daigo murmured as he landed gracefully on a stone pillar, dodging a lash of red chakra that reduced his previous position to dust.
"But they lack a good user who wields them with intelligence. What good is moving them like a madman if you can't hit or catch anyone?"
However, Daigo was a strategist above all else. He knew his current state was precarious and that his tactical advantage was slipping away.
Kushina was already manifesting the second tail, and the chakra cloak was beginning to burn her own skin. Every step the beast-woman took created small pressure explosions that cracked the ground.
The heat emanating from her was now comparable to Pakura's scorch release.
"Well... time to stop running," Daigo thought, closing the only eye for a moment to focus on his breathing.
"Seven Heavens Breath... Fifth Breath, Activate!"
The change was violent, almost traumatic for his body. A burst of hot air erupted from Daigo's pores, kicking up a cloud of dust around him. His heart beat with the force of a war drum; his muscles surged with a pulse of extra strength, and his reflexes skyrocketed beyond normal limits.
Now enveloped in a shimmering aura of chakra, Daigo felt more alive than ever. His eye, boosted by chakra, saw everything with terrifying clarity. His body was ready for a new fight.
The battle entered a phase of pure brutality. Kushina launched herself like a blur of red death, but Daigo met her head-on. It wasn't a fight of long-range jutsus; it was pure, Taijutsu.
The clash of Daigo's fists against the Kyūbi's cloak created shockwaves of wind, his hands reinforced by a layer of crystal.
Daigo demonstrated why he was considered the greatest genius of his generation in Suna.
He used his crystal chains not just for defense, but to redirect Kushina's brute force. When she launched a blow capable of demolishing a stone wall, Daigo used a chain as a lever, spinning in the air with technical elegance to strike the Jinchūriki's exposed points with his elbows and knees, both hardened by thin layers of crystal.
Every strike from Daigo carried the high-frequency vibration of the Shōton, attempting to destabilize the cohesion of the beast's red cloak.
It was a battle that a person who often spoke of "youth" would have loved to see.
two auras of pink and red clashing The tactical genius of Suna was achieving the impossible: holding a force of nature at bay.
But the Nine-Tails' hatred is infinite, and its patience is zero. Kushina, frustrated by the superior technique of that "insect," let out a roar so powerful it shattered Daigo's crystals and sent him flying back.
The chakra around her turned dark, almost black. Her skin began to peel away in strips, revealing a form of raw flesh and pure energy. The fourth tail emerged, and with it, her human form vanished. She looked more like a monster than a person.
As more Kyūbi chakra was released, the surrounding ninjas began to feel the pure malice and dread of that macabre energy.
Hiruzen Sarutobi, in the middle of his own duel against the Kazekage, knew Kushina had lost control the moment the fourth tail appeared.
"Kushina! Control yourself! Don't let it consume you!" the Hokage shouted, but it was useless. He knew that in her current mental state, she wouldn't listen to anyone especially when that chakra offered her the chance to take revenge on the one who put her in this position.
Daigo, feeling the alarm of his Seismic Sense like a drill in his skull, began to retreat defensively. His crystal chains dug deep into the ground, anchoring him as he watched Kushina open her mouth wide. Red and blue chakra began to spin violently, condensing into a black sphere of terrifying density that seemed to swallow the sunlight.
"A Bijūdama..." Daigo whispered. He looked behind him to see where the blast would land if he dodged. "It's headed for Kanzaki. If this hits, not even the memory of this place will remain and this city is too important for Suna to lose."
Kanzaki was the strategic heart of Suna on this front and vital for Daigo's future plans. If the city fell, the war was lost in that very instant.
Daigo's teeth ground together; his hands moved in a blur of desperate seals, raising wall after wall of reinforced crystal. But he knew, with the cold logic of a strategist, it wasn't enough. The crystal would shatter like ordinary glass against such a power.
"You're not alone in this, Daigo! We know how vital this city is!"
Rasa's voice resonated like a thunderclap of hope. He appeared to Daigo's right, hands buried in the earth as a tide of Gold Dust rose to form a massive shield. To his left, Arata landed heavily, his arms wrapped in sand, creating a reinforcement dome that intertwined with Rasa's gold in a hybrid structure.
Pakura appeared as well, her clothes somewhat tattered after facing the Ino-Shika-Cho trio. Her scorch orbs spun so fast the air seemed to melt.
"Use my heat to fuse the layers! Let's make it one solid piece!" she shouted, injecting her heat energy into the mix of crystal, gold, and sand, creating a defensive alloy never before seen in ninja history.
Kushina, having formed the Bijūdama, swallowed it whole before opening her mouth to fire.
The blast tore through the air with a screech that ripped the space itself, leaving a wake of vacuum behind it. The impact instantly vaporized the outer layers of pure gold.
Arata's sand wall held for a second of agony before being scattered like ash in the wind. Pakura's thermal defense was pierced, but she managed to deflect a critical portion of the energy toward the sides of the crater.
The attack finally slammed into the final barrier: Daigo's crystal, imbued with the Fifth Breath and reinforced by his comrades' chakra.
"RESIST!" Daigo roared, channeling his chakra into the wall.
!BOOOOOMM!
The explosion was cataclysmic. A sphere of absolute white light enveloped the battlefield, followed by a shockwave that swept the land for miles, uprooting rocks and tossing ninjas from both sides like dry leaves in a hurricane.
The roar was so loud that the entire world seemed to go deaf for a long, agonizing minute where no one could hear a thing.
As the dust and gold vapors settled, a giant crater marked the Kanzaki soil. A cracked, smoking, half-melted dome opened slowly from the center. Daigo, Rasa, Arata, and Pakura emerged, staggering.
Their clothes were in rags, their bodies covered in burns and blood, but they were alive. The collective sacrifice of their energy had managed to contain the uncontainable.
Daigo, moved by a survival instinct that surpassed his exhaustion, saw Kushina in the distance. The Bijūdama had temporarily drained her energy, and her four-tailed body was smoking, motionless for a brief but vital moment of recovery.
"It's now or never. If I don't stop her now, there won't be another chance," Daigo thought. Using a Shunshin boosted by the last vestige of his breath, Daigo covered the distance between them in a heartbeat, leaving a trail of broken crystals behind him.
He launched his crystal chains with one final burst of strength, wrapping them around the neck and tails of the red beast, pinning them deep into the molten rock of the crater. With a scream that tore through his vocal cords and echoed across the field, Daigo concentrated all his remaining Shōton into his right fist.
Pink crystal grew over his hand, forming a gauntlet with sharp points that shone with a blinding white light, charged with the vibration of the Fifth Breath.
"It's not personal, but you need to go to sleep!"
Daigo struck Kushina directly in the center of her chest, right where the seal pulsed beneath the Bijuu's chakra.
The impact was so massive that the ground beneath them sank another three meters in an explosion of debris. Daigo didn't stop. Knowing he had to defeat her, he began to unleash a rain of blows upon the Jinchūriki. Every impact sounded like an anvil being struck by a steel sledgehammer.
His fists turned red, bathed in Kushina's blood and the corrosive chakra that tried to burn his skin. But Daigo did not yield. With every strike, the molecular structure of the crystal interfered with the Nine-Tails' chakra flow, forcing it back toward the seal.
Blow by blow, the red cloak began to lose its luster, turning transparent, then fragmenting like shattered glass until it finally vanished.
A heavy, dense silence returned to the outskirts of Kanzaki.
Daigo stopped with his fist raised, gasping erratically as his lungs screamed for air. His knuckles were destroyed, showing bone in some spots, and his chest burned as if he had swallowed glowing coals.
Beneath him, Kushina Uzumaki lay unconscious. Her skin was red from chakra burns and her clothes were little more than rags, but her chest rose and fell with a weak but steady breath. She was alive;
the beast had been contained.
Daigo raised his arm for an instinctive finishing blow a reflex from months of war but a tentacle of Iron Sand wrapped around his waist and pulled him away firmly but without violence.
The Third Kazekage had reached the center of the crater, observing the scene with a mix of pride, respect, and deep concern for his young disciple.
In that same instant, a figure dressed in combat armor descended like lightning from the sky, interposing himself between the Suna ninjas and the fallen woman. It was Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage.
His face, usually calm and full of wisdom, was lined with pain, fatigue, and the bitterness of defeat. He looked at Kushina with relief, then toward where his ninjas carried a Minato Namikaze fighting for his life, and finally fixed his gaze on Daigo.
Around them, the survivors of Konoha gathered defensively. Fugaku Uchiha kept his Sharingan active, though his eyes bled profusely from the overexertion. Hiashi Hyūga and the Ino-Shika-Cho team stood guard, forming an iron circle around their wounded heroes.
Hiruzen slammed his Enma staff into the ground with a force that made the Kanzaki earth tremble one last time.
"RECOUNT THE WOUNDED AND PREPARE FOR AN IMMEDIATE RETREAT!"
the Hokage ordered with an authority that allowed no rebuttal. He then stared at the Kazekage and Daigo. "I will stay here to ensure my men get out alive. If Suna wishes to end this conflict with total annihilation today, you will have to face me until my heart stops beating."
The Third Kazekage observed Daigo, who remained standing despite his wounds, and then Rasa and Arata, who were ready for what come next just waiting for a order.
Suna had won the battle of Kanzaki indisputably. But finishing off the Hokage would be the perfect victory for Suna and the Kazekage intended to take it.
"I'm sorry, Hiruzen, but this is war. Suna cannot allow you to leave just to return later."
At the Kazekage's words, the Suna ninjas roared, ready to charge the Leaf.
But Hiruzen, expanding his staff, blocked the path as he prepared himself. Daigo, watching everything, knew the Kazekage wanted to secure the territory completely and what better way than to end the enemy's Kage?
Using one hand, Daigo began attempting to heal himself while the Kazekage started fighting the Hokage once more, joined by Rasa, Arata, Pakura, and Sasori who had decided to join the fray after staying in the back.
