Chapter 202 - Chapter 198: The Bell

The day after the second loss felt quieter than the losses themselves.

Not because people stopped talking.

Because the talking changed.

It stopped being loud, excited, and hungry.

It became whisper-talk, the kind that makes your skin itch because you can't tell where it's coming from. You can only tell it's about you.

Health Track woke up to a campus that had already started counting them out.

The scoreboard still glowed in everyone's mind. 0–2. Two down. Five left. No room left for "we'll be fine."

The rumor still lived too, crawling through corridors like a rat that no one wanted to acknowledge but everyone fed anyway.

And the bell sat in the center of campus, unmoved, rope hanging still, as if it had patience longer than any human.

XH woke before the dorm lights even flicked on. His ribs hurt immediately when he inhaled. He lay still for a moment, listening to the dorm breathe.

JP snored lightly, not from peace, but from exhaustion that finally won. TZ's breathing was steady but shallow. HS's breathing was not steady at all. HS was awake, XH could tell that from the small stutters, the way HS's inhale caught like he was trying not to sob.

NS was already up, sitting at his desk.

Of course.

The calm posture. The straight back. The face that looked composed even when the room felt like it was collapsing.

XH hated how much that calm anchored the room.

He hated it because he needed it.

He also hated it because he didn't trust it.

XH pushed himself up slowly, wincing.

HS flinched at the movement like a startled animal.

XH swung his legs off the bunk and looked at HS.

HS was sitting upright, shoulders hunched, eyes wide, face pale. His hands were clasped together so tightly his knuckles were white.

XH's voice came low. "Did you sleep."

HS shook his head immediately. Too fast. Honest.

XH swallowed. "Eat today."

HS's mouth trembled. "I can't."

JP groaned in his sleep and rolled over, then muttered something and fell back into silence.

TZ opened his eyes slowly and stared at the ceiling like he was counting reasons to get up.

NS turned his head slightly toward HS.

His voice was calm. "You will eat. If you don't eat, you'll pass out on court. They will film that."

The mention of film hit HS like a slap.

HS swallowed hard.

XH looked at NS with irritation. It was true, but it was harsh.

Then XH remembered they didn't have the luxury of softness.

Not in this place.

Not with staff watching.

Not with cameras hungry.

XH stood up and moved to the sink, splashed water on his face, and watched his reflection.

His bruises looked worse today. His face looked older.

His eyes looked like someone had taken something from him and never gave it back.

The rumor thread had done that.

Not because it changed what he was.

Because it reminded him how easily people would believe the worst if it made them feel safe.

He brushed his teeth, tasted blood again, and forced himself to swallow the nausea.

He had to keep it together.

Not because he wanted to be strong.

Because if he wasn't, HS would collapse.

If HS collapsed, the bell would become a door.

Breakfast was a battlefield without fists.

Students stared. Staff watched. Whispers moved like smoke.

Health Track sat together, tighter than usual.

Even the ones who had been drifting due to stress found their way back to the table, pulled by fear more than loyalty. Fear is a powerful glue.

Kitty sat with June and NC at their usual spot, but the mood was different. Kitty looked tired, eyes glossy as if she hadn't slept. June looked composed, but there were faint shadows under her eyes too.

Cherry sat with arms crossed, expression hard.

Anna ate slowly, barely.

Jihye didn't touch her food at first. She just stared at the cafeteria TV, which played propaganda clips on mute.

The supreme leader's face.

The slogan.

The smiling crowd.

The lie.

A staff member walked by and turned the volume up slightly as if to remind students what this place served.

Kitty's jaw tightened.

June didn't react outwardly, but her fingers tapped once against the table.

XH sat with the boys, forcing himself to eat.

JP poked at his food like it offended him. TZ ate calmly. NS ate with controlled precision.

HS stared at his plate like it was a trap.

XH leaned slightly toward HS. "Small bites."

HS nodded, swallowed, and took one small bite.

His hand trembled.

XH's chest tightened.

Across the cafeteria, VT's cohort sat with better portions again. They laughed louder than necessary. VT sat like a prince in a court he didn't build but inherited anyway. Wink sat with them too, posture composed, eyes avoiding Health Track's table.

Kitty spotted Wink and her expression sharpened.

Cherry followed Kitty's gaze and muttered something under her breath that sounded like a threat.

June didn't look at Wink. She looked straight ahead, chin lifted like she refused to give Wink even a glance of power.

After breakfast, a campus notice flashed on the main board.

TRAINING WINDOW EXTENDED

PROPAGANDA CREDIT INCREASED

PHONE ACCESS REDUCED

ATTENDANCE MANDATORY

Extended.

Increased.

Reduced.

Mandatory.

The institution didn't punish them for losing.

It punished them for still existing.

JP read the notice and laughed once, sharp and humorless. "They're tightening the cage."

TZ's voice was quiet. "They want us exhausted by Game 3."

NS nodded once. "They want mistakes."

HS's breathing sped up just reading the board.

XH reached out and touched HS's shoulder lightly. HS flinched, then relaxed slightly, like touch reminded him he wasn't alone.

They walked toward the training area under staff supervision.

The court looked the same, but it felt different.

Because now the crowd wasn't cheering.

The crowd was judging.

Even when the stands were empty, you could feel the imaginary eyes.

The first hour was conditioning again.

Running drills. Sprints. Push-ups. Core work.

HS struggled early. His breath got shallow fast. He looked like he was trying to breathe through panic.

A staff supervisor watched with a clipboard, writing.

Not coaching.

Logging.

XH noticed it and felt rage flare, but he swallowed it.

Because rage was what they wanted.

They wanted him to explode again.

They wanted him to become a clip.

They wanted him punished.

XH moved closer to HS during a water break.

"Look at me," XH said quietly.

HS's eyes were glassy. "I can't do this."

XH's throat tightened. "Yes you can."

HS's voice cracked. "I'm red. I'm red and I'm weak."

XH shook his head hard. "You're not weak."

HS laughed once, broken. "Then why does my body shake like this."

XH didn't have a perfect answer.

So he gave the only honest one.

"Because you're human," XH said. "And they're trying to make you feel like that's shameful."

HS's eyes filled.

XH leaned closer, voice steady. "Your shaking doesn't mean you quit. It means you're still fighting."

HS swallowed hard.

He nodded once.

Not confident.

But present.

Across the court, NS watched silently.

XH caught his gaze for a second.

NS looked away, calm.

It made XH's stomach twist again, that unease returning.

The second hour was tactics.

No whistles.

No refs.

Just planning.

How to stop VT's drive. How to protect the lane. How to keep HS from being targeted into a freeze.

JP scribbled on a paper with furious energy. TZ suggested rotations calmly. NS spoke like a strategist, calm, precise.

XH listened, but his mind kept snagging on the other war.

The rumor.

The review room.

The threat.

Admin hadn't cleared him. They'd only leashed him.

If he fought too loudly, they'd pull the leash.

If he stayed too quiet, the narrative would swallow him.

Then Kitty and June arrived to watch.

Not officially allowed to coach, but allowed to watch because the institution liked pressure.

Kitty stood near the sideline with NC and the girls. Her eyes stayed on XH, scanning him like she was checking if he was still intact.

June watched too, but differently. June's gaze looked like it could cut through lies.

Cherry watched VT's cohort training on the far side and looked like she wanted to throw something.

Jihye stood slightly behind the group, quiet, eyes distant.

Anna stayed close to NC.

During a short break, Kitty took a step closer to where XH was stretching.

She didn't touch him. She couldn't. Staff were watching.

But her voice came soft. "Are you eating."

XH's mouth twitched slightly. Not a smile. A crack of humanity. "Yes."

Kitty's eyes were wet. "Good."

June stepped closer too, expression composed. "Don't let them isolate you."

XH nodded. "They already tried."

June's eyes sharpened. "And."

XH's jaw tightened. "And I didn't fold."

Kitty exhaled shakily, relief and fear mixed.

NC stood behind them and murmured, "We'll keep watching."

Cherry muttered, "We'll keep remembering faces."

Jihye's voice came quiet, almost like she was speaking to the rain clouds outside. "The bell is not mercy."

Kitty's eyes flicked toward the center of campus instinctively, where the bell stood far away like a quiet judge.

Kitty swallowed hard.

Then she saw NS step toward June slightly, just a fraction, as if to speak.

NS's voice was low, friendly. "June, don't push him too hard today. He's carrying a lot."

It sounded caring.

It sounded reasonable.

June's face softened a fraction. "I know."

Kitty's stomach tightened.

Because that line, said that way, didn't just sound like care.

It sounded like positioning.

Kitty glanced at NS.

NS's expression was calm.

He looked away quickly.

Kitty didn't know why, but she felt the smallest chill.

Then, later, NS spoke to Kitty separately when June had stepped away to talk to NC.

NS's voice was low. "Kitty, don't blame June if XH cracks. June's pride makes her harsh. She doesn't always know when she's hurting people."

Kitty's jaw tightened.

NS's words were subtle, gentle, framed like concern.

But Kitty heard the seed inside it.

Blame June.

Kitty's chest tightened.

She didn't answer.

She just nodded once, noncommittal.

NS walked away calm.

Kitty stood still for a second, feeling something shift.

Not a proof.

Not a confirmation.

Just a sense.

NS was not only trying to win games.

He was trying to adjust people.

Tiny pushes.

Tiny pulls.

To where.

Kitty didn't know yet.

But her dream did.

That afternoon, staff forced students into the propaganda hall again.

Phones were confiscated at the door. Attendance logged. Bonus credit promised.

The screen lit up with the leader's face.

MALT.

Students sat in rows like prisoners in a theatre.

Some watched blankly. Some stared at the floor. Some slipped out quietly when staff looked away, gathering in small groups outside the hall in the dark corridor.

Health Track ditched too, like everyone else.

They stood outside the cinema hall, whispering.

JP muttered, "This man will bomb us one day."

TZ glanced around quickly. "Don't say that out loud."

JP laughed bitterly. "He's literally on the screen."

HS whispered, voice shaking, "Why do they make us watch this."

XH's voice was low. "To teach you you're small."

June's voice came from behind them suddenly. "Then we become bigger."

XH turned.

June stood there with Kitty and NC, faces serious.

Kitty's eyes looked tired. June's eyes looked sharp.

Cherry stood behind them, arms crossed.

Jihye lingered at the edge, watching the hallway like she expected someone to appear.

XH's chest tightened at the sight of them.

Even in chaos, the triangle held.

Not romance.

A shared line of survival.

They walked back toward dorms at dusk.

The sky looked wrong again.

Not stormy. Not clear. Just heavy.

Rain began without warning, light at first, then heavier, like the campus itself couldn't decide how to feel.

Students hurried under overhangs.

Kitty and June moved together with NC and the girls.

Health Track boys moved together too.

At the center of campus, the bell stood silent.

But tonight it felt louder.

Like the rope was calling without sound.

HS slowed as they passed.

XH noticed immediately.

HS's eyes fixed on the bell.

His breathing changed. Faster. Shallow.

XH stopped walking.

JP stopped. TZ stopped. NS stopped.

The girls slowed too, noticing.

Kitty's hand moved instinctively toward her mouth.

June's jaw clenched.

NC's posture tightened.

Cherry whispered, "No."

HS took one step toward the bell.

XH moved fast, grabbing HS's wrist gently but firmly.

"HS," XH said low.

HS's eyes were wet. "I can't."

XH's throat tightened. "You can."

HS shook his head, desperate. "I'm red. I'm shaky. I'm failing. I'm ruining you."

XH's voice broke slightly, just a crack. "You're not ruining me."

HS's lips trembled. "Then why do I feel like a dead weight."

XH pulled HS closer, not hugging, just closing distance enough to make HS feel less alone.

"Because they trained you to feel that way," XH said. "Because they want you to ring it so they can call it your choice."

HS's breath hitched.

The bell rope swayed slightly in the wind.

It looked like it was breathing too.

Kitty whispered, voice trembling, "Please."

HS looked at Kitty.

Kitty's eyes were wet, pleading, not romantic, just human.

June looked at HS too, eyes sharp but honest. "Don't give them the satisfaction."

HS swallowed hard.

His body shook.

His eyes slid back to the rope like it was a door out of pain.

XH tightened his grip gently.

"Not tonight," XH whispered.

HS's shoulders shook.

He nodded once, tiny.

He stepped back.

The bell remained unrung.

But the fact that HS had walked close enough to feel its presence meant the bell had already entered the story.

They walked back to dorms under heavy rain.

No forecast.

No warning.

Just weather that behaved like fate.

That night, Kitty couldn't sleep.

She lay staring at the ceiling, listening to rain tap the window.

Her dream returned in fragments.

XH and NS facing each other.

Silence.

Glass.

Her hands stained red.

She sat up abruptly, breath ragged.

NC stirred. "Kitty."

Kitty whispered, "He's going to fight NS."

NC's voice was gentle. "Who."

Kitty swallowed. "XH."

NC didn't ask why.

June sat up too, eyes sharp in the dark. "What did you dream."

Kitty's throat tightened. "A standoff. XH and NS."

June was quiet for a moment.

Then June whispered, low and firm, "Then we stop it."

Kitty didn't answer.

Because deep down she knew something terrifying.

Some fights weren't stopped by will.

Some fights were built by pressure until they became inevitable.

In the boys' dorm, XH sat on his bunk staring at his hands.

JP was writing something in his notebook, angry scribbles.

TZ lay back staring at the ceiling.

HS lay in bed shaking quietly.

NS sat at his desk calm, face unreadable.

XH stared at NS's back.

He thought about the way NS spoke to June, then Kitty.

The different shapes of truth.

The tiny pushes.

XH didn't have proof.

But he had instinct.

And instinct had started to sharpen like a blade.

XH whispered, very quietly, to no one.

"Not just them."

Not just the institution.

Not just VT.

Not just Wink.

Not just the whistle.

The war had more fronts now.

Trust was becoming a battlefield too.

Outside, the rain kept falling.

Inside, the bell waited.

And HS had touched the edge of quitting without ringing it, which meant the rope was already in his mind, swaying even when the wind wasn't there.
