Chapter 201 - Chapter 197: The Shot That Didn’t Belong to Anyone

The ball hung in the air longer than it should have.

Not because physics changed.

Because fear stretches time.

VT's second free throw left his hands with perfect calm. His wrist flicked like he had done this a thousand times, like he had never once missed a moment that mattered.

The crowd inhaled as one organism.

Kitty's hands were clasped so tightly her fingers hurt. Her throat felt dry. Her eyes were wet but she didn't blink because blinking felt like surrender.

June leaned forward, spine straight, jaw clenched, eyes wide in a way she would never admit later. For all her discipline, for all her pride, for all her controlled calm, she still had a human heart. And right now that heart was pounding against the cage of her ribs like it wanted out.

HS stood at the lane trembling, hands on his knees, face pale. His eyes didn't track the ball smoothly. They jumped, like his mind was trying to run away from the outcome before it arrived.

JP's fists clenched at his sides. TZ's jaw tightened. NS's gaze sharpened, calm gone now, replaced by something focused and sharp like a blade.

XH stood at the lane, ribs screaming, jaw clenched so hard it felt like his teeth might crack. He didn't look at VT's face. He didn't look at the ref. He stared at the ball.

Because the ball was the verdict.

The arena was quiet for a fraction, then the rain hammered the roof again like applause from a cruel sky.

The ball hit the rim.

It rattled.

The sound was loud, metallic, like a coin spinning.

For a split second, it looked like it might bounce out.

Kitty's breath caught.

June's fingers tightened on the edge of her seat.

HS swayed slightly like his legs forgot how to be legs.

Then the ball dropped.

Swish.

The crowd exploded.

Engineering supporters screamed like they'd won a championship. Others booed, furious, but boos were swallowed by cheers. The camera zoomed in on VT's face as he smiled faintly and stepped back, as if the game had been his property all along.

The scoreboard updated.

Health Track down by one.

Buzzer.

Game 2 ended.

For half a second, XH didn't move.

His body froze like it couldn't accept that the story had just been written by a whistle and a rim.

Then reality hit.

Game 2 loss.

Series 0–2.

Two down.

Five more to survive.

Or five more to get erased.

XH's chest tightened so hard he felt dizzy.

JP cursed loudly and had to clamp his mouth shut immediately when he saw staff and cameras turn toward them, hungry for footage.

TZ stared at the scoreboard like he wanted to rip it off the wall.

NS stood still, breathing controlled, eyes sharp, like he was already calculating how to win the next game.

HS looked like he might faint.

XH reached out and grabbed HS's wrist quickly, steadying him.

HS's skin felt cold.

HS whispered, broken, "We're dying."

XH swallowed hard. "Not yet."

VT's cohort celebrated on the court like it was a festival. They high-fived. They shouted. They pointed toward the stands. VT looked directly at the girls' section and lifted two fingers casually like he was counting wins.

Kitty's chest burned with anger.

June's jaw clenched so hard her face shook slightly.

Cherry stood up behind them and muttered, "I hate him."

NC grabbed Cherry's sleeve gently. "Not here."

Anna started crying again, quiet and shaky, and NC pulled her close.

Jihye stared at the court, expression blank. Her fingers moved as if she wanted to shuffle tarot cards, but she didn't. Like she refused to make fate into a toy right now.

Kitty couldn't breathe properly.

The rain sound on the roof made it worse.

Because it felt like the dream again.

The glass. The silence. The rain. The feeling that she couldn't move.

Kitty stood up abruptly, not because she wanted attention, but because sitting felt like suffocating.

June grabbed her wrist lightly. "Kitty."

Kitty's voice trembled. "I can't watch him break."

June's eyes were hard, but her voice came quieter. "Then don't watch him break. Watch him fight."

Kitty swallowed hard.

She sat back down slowly, shoulders shaking.

On the court, Health Track was ordered to line up for the post-game handshake.

Handshake.

As if this was sportsmanship.

As if the institution hadn't just tried to erase them.

VT's cohort walked down the line with smug smiles.

Some shook hands hard, too hard, squeezing like they wanted pain to travel through the skin.

XH shook hands without looking up.

He felt rage burning under his ribs like a second heartbeat.

When VT reached him, VT's hand gripped XH's too tightly, then VT leaned in slightly, voice low.

"Two," VT murmured. "You still think you go back to Campus-2."

XH's jaw clenched.

VT smiled faintly. "Enjoy being remembered."

XH's hand almost snapped.

He wanted to punch.

He didn't.

He released VT's hand and stepped away without reacting.

Because cameras loved reactions.

Because reactions became discipline.

Because discipline became red.

As the teams left the court, staff guided Health Track toward a side tunnel, away from the crowd. It felt like being escorted out of a trial after being sentenced.

The hallway smelled like sweat and disinfectant.

XH's chest tightened.

JP's footsteps were loud, angry.

TZ's footsteps were controlled.

HS's footsteps were unsteady.

NS's footsteps were silent.

At the locker room door, a staff member stopped them.

"Captain XH," the staff member said.

XH's stomach dropped.

The staff member's tone was too polite.

"Your review is scheduled," the staff member continued. "Now."

Now.

Not after rest.

Not after recovery.

Now.

They wanted him isolated again.

JP snapped, "After the game. He needs—"

The staff member cut him off. "Now."

XH's jaw clenched.

He looked back at the boys.

JP's eyes were furious.

TZ's eyes were worried.

HS looked terrified.

NS looked calm again, like he had expected this.

XH exhaled slowly.

"I'll go," XH said quietly.

Kitty's face flashed in his mind. June's eyes. The rumor thread.

He couldn't afford to be cut from captain role mid-series. If he got suspended, the team would crumble.

He followed the staff member down a corridor with fluorescent lights and no windows.

Each step felt like walking deeper into a mouth.

The review room smelled like paper and cheap air freshener. Two administrators sat behind a table. A third typed. The same faces from yesterday.

They looked pleased.

XH sat down, hands on his knees, forcing his breathing steady.

The administrator spoke calmly. "Student XH. Your conduct review continues."

XH's jaw clenched. "You said cameras were down."

The administrator smiled faintly. "We said cameras were nonfunctional."

XH's chest tightened. "Same lie."

The administrator's smile faded slightly. "Watch your tone."

Tone again.

XH stared at the table, forcing calm.

The administrator continued. "The forum rumor has escalated."

XH's eyes sharpened. "Because you let it."

The administrator leaned forward. "We do not control student forums."

XH laughed once, humorless. "You control everything."

The administrator's gaze hardened. "Your denial is noted."

XH's hands clenched. "I want evidence. I want a log. I want a name."

The administrator shook his head. "Personnel identities are protected."

XH's throat burned. "Then how do you accuse me."

The administrator leaned back. "We are not accusing. We are monitoring. A captain must maintain image."

Image.

That was the word.

They weren't seeking truth.

They were shaping narrative.

The administrator continued, calm. "You will not address this publicly. You will not provoke unrest. You will focus on the series."

XH's jaw clenched. "So you want me quiet."

The administrator nodded. "We want stability."

Stability.

The word that meant obedience.

XH forced his voice steady. "And if I refuse."

The administrator's tone stayed calm. "Discipline threshold adjustments may occur."

The threat sat heavy.

They were holding his future like a leash.

XH swallowed hard.

He understood the trap fully now.

They didn't need to prove anything.

They just needed to keep him scared enough to stay quiet.

They dismissed him with polite cruelty.

XH walked back to the locker room with his hands trembling, rage burning behind his eyes.

In the locker room, the boys were waiting.

JP exploded the second XH stepped in. "What did they do."

XH's voice was low. "Nothing."

JP blinked. "Nothing."

XH shook his head. "They're not clearing me. They're just… holding it."

TZ's jaw tightened. "So it's leverage."

XH nodded once.

HS whispered, voice trembling, "They can cut you anytime."

XH's throat tightened. "Yes."

JP slammed his fist into the locker. "This is war."

NS spoke quietly. "It's always been war."

XH looked at NS.

For a second, XH's mind flashed to Kitty's dream again, even though he didn't know it. XH and NS facing each other. Something inside him felt uneasy.

But there was no time to chase unease.

HS was shaking.

The series was 0–2.

The bell was waiting.

XH stepped closer to HS and spoke low, steady.

"HS," XH said. "Look at me."

HS looked up, eyes wet.

XH's voice softened. "You're not going to ring that bell today."

HS's lips trembled. "I don't know if I can keep doing this."

XH swallowed hard. "One more day. One more game. Then another. That's it."

HS's shoulders shook.

JP stepped in and said, rough but real. "We win one, then the story changes."

TZ nodded. "We just need one."

NS's voice came calm again. "We can do it."

XH watched NS's face.

That calm was both comfort and threat.

Outside the locker room, students filled the corridor, buzzing with adrenaline, gossip, and hunger for updates.

The rumor still lived.

The series now looked like a slaughter to some.

People were already making jokes.

People were already placing bets.

The institution had succeeded in one thing.

It had turned survival into entertainment.

Kitty and June waited outside with NC, Cherry, Anna, and Jihye.

Kitty stepped forward the moment she saw XH.

Her eyes scanned his face quickly, checking for new damage, checking for collapse.

XH tried to give her a neutral look.

Kitty's voice trembled. "Are you okay."

XH's voice was quiet. "I'm fine."

Kitty's eyes filled slightly. She didn't believe him, but she didn't press. Pressing could crack him in public.

June stepped forward too, expression composed, but her eyes sharp. "What did they say."

XH's jaw clenched. "Nothing useful."

June nodded once, understanding. "So they're holding you."

XH's throat tightened. "Yes."

Cherry muttered, "I want to burn this place down."

NC shot her a look. "We survive first."

Jihye whispered, almost to herself, "The rain gets heavier."

Kitty looked up toward the roof.

The rain had started again outside, tapping the windows now, faint but steady.

No forecast.

Always at the worst moments.

Kitty's chest tightened.

Her dream's rain.

Her dream's silence.

She looked at XH and then, without thinking, looked at NS.

NS met her gaze for a second.

His expression was unreadable.

Kitty's stomach twisted.

She didn't know why, but she felt like the space between XH and NS was tightening in invisible ways.

Like the institution wasn't the only enemy growing.

That night, the dorm air felt heavier.

Students kept refreshing the forum.

New posts emerged.

Some defending XH.

Some attacking.

Some laughing.

Some hungry for more.

The planted photos had become a parasite that fed on attention.

XH sat on his bunk staring at his hands.

He wanted to scream again.

He didn't.

He swallowed it down and stared at the wall.

Rain slid down the window in thick lines.

Kitty lay in bed staring at the ceiling, heart pounding.

She didn't want to sleep.

She didn't want to see the dream again.

June sat at her desk with her notes open but not reading.

Her thoughts were on XH's bruises, on Kitty's shaking hands, on the institution's smile.

NS sat at his desk in the boys' dorm, posture straight, face calm.

His phone was restricted, but his mind wasn't.

HS lay in bed trembling, eyes open, staring at the dark.

The bell stood in the center of campus, rope hanging still.

The scoreboard now said 0–2.

The cameras would be back tomorrow.

And the war was no longer just on the court.

It was in their names.

In their reputations.

In the way trust began to strain under pressure.

Game 2 was over.

The series was dangerous now.

And somewhere under the rain, the institution waited to see who would break first.
