Chapter 185 - CHAPTER 185

The first step always seems small.

Yet its impact.

is never simple.

The morning had not yet fully passed when the system began to move.

Across various points in the city, suspicious transactions were suddenly frozen. Unexpected audits appeared without warning. Anonymous reports flooded the regulators. Names that had remained hidden for so long.

slowly surfaced into the light.

All of this.

was not a coincidence.

It was.

the initial move.

Of a plan carefully crafted by Sophia.

Inside the hospital room

The atmosphere appeared calm.

But the laptop screen on the small table beside the bed.

told a different story.

Data shifted constantly.

Graphs fluctuated wildly.

And one small company.

began to crumble.

Daniel stood before the screen.

His fingers moved rapidly.

"The pressure is starting to be felt," he muttered.

Leonard Graves leaned against the wall.

"How bad is it?"

Daniel smirked slightly.

"Bad enough to make them panic."

Leonard nodded.

"Good. Panic usually makes people stupid."

On the bed.

Sophia watched.

Although her body hadn't fully recovered.

her eyes remained sharp.

"It's not enough," she said softly.

Daniel turned.

"We've only just started."

Sophia shook her head.

"He hasn't reacted yet."

Silence settled briefly.

Everyone understood what she meant.

If Marcus Sterling hadn't made a move.

it meant they hadn't touched the core yet.

The door opened.

Adrian Blackwood entered.

His steps were calm.

But the aura surrounding him.

immediately shifted the atmosphere.

"Update."

One word.

Daniel answered immediately,

"We've triggered three points in the network."

Adrian glanced at the screen.

"Reaction?"

"Not significant yet."

Adrian looked at Sophia.

Their eyes met.

And without a word.

they were already in agreement.

This wasn't enough.

"Push harder," Sophia said.

Daniel hesitated.

"If we go too fast."

"We lose momentum," Sophia cut in.

Her voice remained calm.

Yet it left no room for argument.

Adrian observed.

For a few seconds.

Then.

he nodded.

"Do it."

Daniel sighed.

"Alright…"

His fingers moved again.

Faster.

Deeper.

And within minutes.

the attack intensified.

Outside.

the world began to feel the impact.

Stocks of several small companies plummeted.

Accounts were frozen.

Investigations were opened.

And names that had long been hidden.

started to be exposed.

Yet amidst all this.

one thing remained the same.

Marcus.

had not moved.

In a dark room

a large screen displayed all the data.

Marcus Sterling stood still.

His hands behind his back.

His gaze was calm.

As if everything happening.

was merely numbers.

"Interesting…" he murmured softly.

Someone beside him asked,

"Should we respond?"

Marcus shook his head.

"Not yet."

He stepped closer to the screen.

Zooming in on one section.

The small company that was now the center of the attack.

"Let them play…"

A smile appeared.

Thin.

But dangerous.

"…they don't know what they are touching yet."

Back at the hospital

Daniel suddenly stopped typing.

His expression changed.

"There's something…"

Leonard immediately stood straight.

"What?"

Daniel pointed at the screen.

"That company… they aren't fighting back."

Silence.

Sophia narrowed her eyes.

"That's impossible."

Daniel shook his head.

"No movement. No attempt to cover tracks. No panic."

Adrian understood instantly.

"It's a trap."

One sentence.

But it was enough.

Sophia immediately sat up straighter.

Even though her body protested.

"Pull back."

Daniel moved instantly.

But.

it was too late.

The screen flickered.

Data shifted.

Fast.

Unstable.

"He reversed the system!" Daniel shouted.

Leonard cursed.

"Damn it."

In a matter of seconds.

everything they had done.

turned against them.

The audits they triggered.

were redirected back to their own companies.

The data they exposed.

was used to counterattack.

And worst of all.

their trail.

was laid bare.

Daniel tried to hold it back.

But it was overwhelming.

"It's too deep… I can't stop everything!"

Adrian stood up.

The aura around him shifted.

Colder.

Sharper.

"Disconnect."

Daniel looked at him.

"We'll lose all access."

Adrian did not hesitate.

"Disconnect."

Daniel gritted his teeth.

and pressed the button.

The system went dead.

All connections.

severed.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Leonard exhaled a long breath.

"Well… that didn't go according to plan."

Sophia stared at the now dark screen.

Her face was calm.

But her eyes.

held depth.

"He was waiting for us."

Adrian nodded.

"And we walked right in."

Several seconds passed.

No one spoke.

Until finally.

Sophia smiled faintly.

Leonard raised an eyebrow.

"Why are you smiling?"

Sophia turned.

"Because now I know."

Daniel looked confused.

"Know what?"

Sophia stared straight ahead.

"He cares about that path."

Silence.

Daniel understood.

"So it really is important."

Sophia nodded.

"And now… he knows we are getting close."

Adrian looked at her.

"And that is dangerous."

Sophia nodded.

"For him… too."

Elsewhere

Marcus looked at the now empty screen.

The system was stable again.

The attack had stopped.

He smiled faintly.

"They learn fast…"

He turned around.

But this time.

his gaze was sharper.

"Interesting."

Someone asked,

"What is the next step?"

Marcus paused briefly.

Then answered,

"We accelerate."

His voice was calm.

Yet heavy with meaning.

"It is time to raise the stakes."

Back at the hospital

the atmosphere changed.

No longer merely defensive.

No longer just holding on.

Now.

both sides knew.

The game had entered a new phase.

Faster.

More dangerous.

More… personal.

Sophia looked at Adrian.

"We almost touched him."

Adrian returned the look.

"And he almost killed us."

Sophia smiled faintly.

"Which means we are on the right track."

A brief silence.

Then.

Adrian smiled too.

Thin.

But real.

"In that case… let's continue."

And between them.

there was no longer any doubt.

Because now.

this wasn't just a war.

This was.

betting everything.

And no one was going to back down.

The afternoon sky shifted slowly, the light that was once soft now felt sharper, as if adding to the pressure inside the room.

No one was truly relaxed.

They all knew they had just escaped a trap, not emerged from the war.

Sophia kept her eyes on the dead screen. Her hands rested on the blanket, her fingers slightly tense. Her face was calm, but her mind raced, rearranging all the possibilities that had just opened up.

"He wasn't just waiting," she said softly.

Daniel looked up. "What do you mean?"

Sophia took a slow breath. "He let us go that far. Which means he wanted to see how far we dared to go."

Daniel nodded slowly. "And we showed everything."

Leonard Graves clicked his tongue softly. "Meaning we just laid our cards on the table."

"Not all," Sophia replied.

Leonard glanced at her. "Are you sure?"

Sophia turned, her gaze sharp despite her weak body. "If he truly knew everything, we wouldn't be sitting here right now."

Silence fell for a moment.

The logic made sense.

And it was also terrifying.

Adrian Blackwood stood near the window. His hands in his pockets, his eyes looking out, but clearly he wasn't really seeing the view outside.

He was calculating.

Risks.

Time.

The next move.

"We need time," he finally said.

Daniel nodded quickly. "To rebuild access."

Leonard added, "And to make sure we don't fall into the same hole again."

Sophia fell silent for a moment.

She disliked that word.

Time.

Because the longer they waited, the more room Marcus had to move.

"He won't give us time," she said quietly.

Adrian turned.

Their eyes met.

"Then we take it," he answered simply.

Outside the room, footsteps were heard approaching quickly.

A security officer stopped at the door, knocking twice before entering.

His face was tense.

"There is movement outside," he said.

Leonard immediately stood alert. "What kind of movement?"

"Several suspicious vehicles. They aren't approaching, but they aren't leaving either."

Daniel immediately opened his laptop again. "He's watching."

Sophia didn't look surprised.

She simply closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them again.

"Not watching," she corrected.

Everyone turned.

"Pressuring."

Silence descended once more.

The weight of the word was heavy.

Marcus wasn't attacking directly.

He was creating pressure.

Slowly.

Continuously.

Until his opponent made a mistake.

Adrian walked to the door, then stopped.

He didn't go out.

But his presence there was enough to give an order without words.

"Secure all access points," he said.

The officer nodded quickly and left.

Leonard crossed his arms. "He's trying to lure us out."

Daniel added, "Or force us to defend until we are exhausted."

Sophia shook her head slowly.

"Both."

She looked toward the door.

As if she could see through it.

As if she could feel the presence of someone out there.

"He wants us to feel like we have no choice."

Several seconds passed in silence.

Then Sophia spoke again.

"Then we create a new choice."

Daniel frowned. "What do you mean?"

Sophia looked at him. "We don't attack him."

Leonard raised an eyebrow. "You just said we need to keep pressing."

Sophia smiled faintly.

"Not him."

She paused briefly.

Then continued in a softer tone.

"We attack the people he protects."

The atmosphere instantly shifted.

Sharper.

More alive.

Daniel immediately understood part of it. "The inner circle?"

Sophia nodded.

"The people he trusts. The people he needs."

Leonard grinned. "Finally, things are getting dirty."

Sophia didn't deny it.

"He plays from the shadows. So we pull him out."

Adrian watched Sophia.

More intently than before.

He knew the plan was effective.

He also knew the risk.

Because attacking the inner circle meant opening up a much wider conflict.

More dangerous.

Yet he didn't stop her.

Because he saw one thing that could not be ignored.

Conviction.

And something else.

Fear, hidden so neatly behind her resolve.

"Who is the first target," Adrian asked.

Sophia didn't answer immediately.

She stared at the blank screen for a few seconds.

As if remembering something.

Or someone.

"He has one person he never lets be seen," she said softly.

Daniel immediately started typing fast.

"Who?"

Sophia looked straight ahead.

"The one who handles the actual flow of funds."

Leonard let out a low whistle. "If we touch that, he will definitely react."

"Yes," Sophia answered.

"And this time, he won't be able to hide."

Elsewhere, far from the hospital, the dark room lit up again with the glow of screens.

Marcus Sterling stood motionless.

His eyes watched the moving data.

But his attention wasn't fully there.

He raised his hand slightly.

Someone approached.

"Yes, Sir."

Marcus didn't turn.

"They've changed direction."

The man nodded. "We see it too."

Marcus smiled faintly.

"Good."

He finally turned around.

His gaze was sharper.

More focused.

"Which means they are starting to understand."

A brief silence.

Then he continued.

"And that makes everything much more interesting."

Back at the hospital, the atmosphere was no longer just about survival.

The air felt different.

Denser.

More alive.

Because now they weren't just waiting for an attack.

They were preparing to change the course of the game.

Sophia took a slow breath.

Her body was still weak.

But her mind never stopped.

She knew the risk of this move.

She knew the consequences.

But she also knew one thing.

If they kept defending, they would slowly crumble.

And she would not let that happen.

Adrian stood beside her.

Without a word.

But close enough.

Close enough to show that whatever came next, they would face it together.

And out there, someone was also waiting.

Not to attack.

But to watch.

See who would fall first.

And this time, there was no room for retreat.
