Chapter 9 - The Hunter Becomes the Hunted

A thin red line appeared across Bear's neck.

He couldn't even scream.

Clutching at his throat, he staggered forward a few steps before collapsing to the ground.

The instant the dagger sliced across Bear's neck, Logan had already leaped from his back.

Holding his breath, he rushed toward the four robbers ahead, the bloodied dagger flashing through the air once more.

There was almost no sound behind them.

By the time Bear's body hit the ground...

Logan was already upon the remaining four.

Four men.

Three guns.

Who should he eliminate first?

The answer was obvious.

The gunmen.

But Harley wasn't his first target.

From Harley's movements alone, Logan could tell he wasn't an ordinary criminal. The man had real combat training.

In Logan's current physical condition...

A sneak attack on Harley had too low a chance of success.

Thud!

The dagger buried itself deep into the back of one gunman.

He let out a miserable scream before collapsing.

At the same moment, the others realized something was wrong and spun around, raising their weapons.

Whoosh!

Logan yanked the bloodstained dagger free.

Without the slightest hesitation, he threw it.

The blade became a streak of cold light cutting through the air.

One of the robbers had only just finished turning around when his eyes widened in horror.

The dagger pierced straight through his neck.

Although he still held his handgun...

He no longer had the strength to pull the trigger.

He collapsed instantly.

Bear...

One gunman...

Then another.

In the blink of an eye, only two robbers remained.

More importantly...

The two men carrying handguns were dead.

Now only Harley remained, gripping his rifle.

Bang!

Harley reacted with astonishing speed.

Flames burst from the rifle's muzzle.

But before the shot was fired, Logan had already moved behind the last surviving robber.

Unlike Harley...

This robber didn't possess the instincts needed to survive.

Before he even understood what was happening...

Logan seized him and pulled him directly into the line of fire.

A spray of blood erupted.

The robber died instantly.

Killed by Harley's own bullet.

Why had Logan eliminated the handgun users first instead of Harley?

First...

Harley was clearly the most skilled fighter among them. Logan couldn't afford to gamble on a failed ambush.

Second...

Although Harley carried a rifle, the other two carried handguns.

Logan had already judged that all three weapons were crude homemade firearms with poor penetration and stopping power.

Still...

He couldn't be completely certain about the handguns.

A pistol round might pass through one body.

But one thing he was sure of...

The homemade rifle couldn't.

Its greatest advantage was its wider spread.

Its penetrating power was far weaker.

Even military rifles sometimes failed to penetrate a human body cleanly.

These cheap knockoffs certainly wouldn't.

Of course...

The impact was another matter entirely.

The tremendous force of the rifle blast sent both the robber's corpse and Logan flying backward.

Unlike a handgun...

The rifle couldn't fire continuously.

It had to be reloaded after every shot.

Harley, shocked and furious, immediately reached to chamber another round.

The first shot had thrown Logan clear of the corpse that had shielded him.

There would be nothing protecting him from the second.

At that critical moment...

Two knives sliced through the air.

The original dagger had already been used to kill one robber.

But while moving, Logan had quietly collected two fresh knives from the fallen bodies.

Now...

He threw them both.

One flew toward Harley's chest.

The other...

Straight at the rifle.

Harley had only one choice.

His expression changed dramatically.

He could dodge one knife...

But not both.

If only he had realized sooner...

Regret came too late.

He instinctively sidestepped to avoid the blade aimed at his heart.

At that exact instant...

The second knife struck the rifle's barrel.

Clang!

The impact knocked the muzzle off target.

Bang!

The rifle roared again.

The bullet missed Logan by inches.

Without looking back, Logan sprinted toward a patch of waist-high grass.

The sudden burst of speed came from the last remaining trace of inner energy within him.

The moment he reached the grass...

That final reserve was exhausted.

He had reached his limit.

Yet Harley...

Was still alive.

Harley wasn't like the other robbers.

The others had relied on brutality and courage.

Harley relied on experience.

Standing perfectly still, he stared at the silent sea of grass before him.

If his opponent had been an ordinary man...

He would have charged in without hesitation.

With his skills, there would have been nothing to fear.

But after witnessing Logan's terrifying display...

For the first time...

Harley hesitated.
