Vera Xavier saw his slightly furrowed brow and decided it was best to soothe him. She said seriously, "I've never been in a real relationship before—what I had with Wesley Kane doesn't count. So I don't really know what jealousy feels like. That's why I can only say 'sort of' for now. When I understand it better and am more certain of my feelings, I'll tell you."
Nathaniel Nathan's gaze deepened as he looked at her. He reached out, gently tapped her nose, and said, "Such clever excuses."
Vera Xavier gave him a sweet smile, and Nathaniel Nathan froze for a moment at the sight.
Her smile was so radiant and lovely it seemed to brighten the humble room. The chill around him dissipated, and he gently reached out to touch her face.
