Just as they were chatting, another knock came at the door.
"Cecilia, Ian, dinner is ready," Aunt Ford said, standing at the door.
"Coming," Cecilia Adler said as she opened the door. "You don't need to make dinner for us tonight. We're going out to eat."
"Oh," Aunt Ford said. "So you passed the exam."
"Yes."
Aunt Ford flattered her. "With your father-in-law looking out for you, passing was a sure thing." 'Beautiful girls really do have better luck than plain-looking ones. Cecilia Adler is a perfect example.'
'She came from a humble background and managed to marry a university student all because of her good looks.'
'Her in-laws are capable people, too. She's set for life.'
Ian Quincy spoke up for Cecilia Adler. "Cecilia passed on her own merit. What does it have to do with my father?" 'He had only provided an opportunity. The path she walked from there depended on her own abilities.'
