Clearly, this creature was what Gregory had become. He was indeed one of the Mother Goddess's favored. Once human, he had entered a black hole tainted by the Mother Goddess and been reshaped into a mass of flowing black ooze, entering a "larval stage." His human form was now merely mimicry.
The unfinished egg—or more accurately, cocoon—was a boon granted after Gregory proactively offered sacrifices to please the Mother Goddess. The blood vessels and nerves of all the dead within the city had been extracted, hardened, and transmuted into the cocoon's threads, while their fat and Blood served as its nutrients.
Ideally, Gregory was supposed to pass through a brief larval stage, complete his metamorphosis inside the cocoon, and emerge in a new, perfect form.
