Finally, after a fierce battle with the Marines, a Buster Call was launched on Egghead Island, annihilating tens of thousands of pirates from the Three Emperors Alliance. Their bodies sank into the sea. Even so, the pirate leaders—Marco, Kaido, and Big Mom—and a small number of captains managed to escape.
After reading the newspaper, Marco was at a loss for words. The World Government's skill with rhetoric really was something. The Marines had clearly been beaten and forced to retreat in chaos, yet the report twisted it into them relentlessly pursuing the pirates. That was the power of controlling the narrative.
Kaido grinned viciously. "Worororo! Now you see it, don't you, Marco? This bogus report doesn't mention the God's Knights or the Gorosei at all. It claims the Marines fought us the whole time and even drove us into a corner. Worororo, how amusing!"
Marco, however, wasn't bothered. He understood perfectly well why the World Government would write it that way.
"There's nothing strange about it. The Marines are the public face of the World Government. Whether it's credit or blame, they're the ones who have to carry it. The God's Knights are basically the World Government's trump card—they'd never want ordinary people to know they exist."
At that point, Kaido went on, "Oh, and the bounties! All of ours went up—except Linlin's."
"Damn you, Kaido! If you can't talk properly, then shut up!" Big Mom roared, furious the moment she heard it.
"Worororo, don't be mad, Linlin…" Kaido laughed, baring his teeth.
Just then, Jom walked over with a wanted poster in hand. "Captain Marco, your bounty went up by a full two billion berries this time. It's much higher than the old man's back then."
Marco took the wanted poster and the paper. When he saw the print, even he was surprised.
"The strongest man in the world, Phoenix Marco. The strongest pirate of the current era, surpassing Whitebeard and Roger. Bounty: 7.5 billion berries."
As he stared at the newspaper, the voice of Marco's system AI suddenly echoed in his mind:
"Mission complete. You have surpassed the old era, become the strongest of the new era, reached an unprecedented bounty of 7.5 billion Berries, and become the strongest man in the world. Reward: 10,000 attribute points."
With another 10,000 points added, his total rose to 20,000 attribute points. Just 30,000 more, and he could upgrade his Devil Fruit.
Marco flipped through the bounty posters of the Phoenix Pirates' other members. Most of the commanders had now broken past the one billion Berries mark, and even those who hadn't were close. Ace's and Yamato's bounties had even soared to 2.5 billion berries each, thanks to the record of them jointly defeating an admiral.
"By the way, Kaido, Linlin," Marco asked curiously, "what are your bounties now? You just said Linlin was an exception. Did her bounty not go up?"
Kaido burst out laughing, clearly in a great mood. "Worororo! If it had just not increased, that would've been fine. Her bounty didn't just stay the same—it went down by 200 million. Now it's only 4.8 billion Berries."
"Shut your mouth. Is that so funny, Kaido…?" Big Mom's furious voice crackled from the Transponder Snail.
For a pirate, having their bounty reduced was extremely rare.
It only happened when the Marines decided a wanted criminal's previous evaluation had been an overestimation and lowered the bounty to show that their threat level wasn't as high as before.
In the pirate world, having your bounty cut by the Marines was one of the greatest humiliations.
Marco didn't care much that Big Mom's bounty was "only" 4.8 billion; among the Three Emperors Alliance, she was already the weakest. He continued, "Kaido, what about you? How much is your bounty?"
Kaido grinned viciously. "Worororo! Me? My current bounty is 6 billion Berries. They're saying I've surpassed Whitebeard and Roger. I'm still a bit behind you, though."
At the same time, today's news was spreading across the world.
The Marines and the Three Emperors Alliance had clashed in a massive battle on Egghead Island, ending with tens of thousands of pirates from the Three Emperors Alliance sinking beneath the waves.
The newspaper didn't mention how many Marines had fallen, but the report had clearly stated from the start that Fujitora and Aramaki led 30,000 Marines to fight the Three Emperors Alliance. So no matter how heavy the Marine casualties were, they couldn't have exceeded 30,000.
After reading this, many pirates across the Grand Line and the New World began to stir.
"Hahahaha! Looks like that so‑called Three Emperors Alliance really got wrecked by the Marines this time! If what's in this paper is true, then they must've taken a huge hit!"
In the New World, the newly appointed Shichibukai Bartolomeo threw his head back, laughing wildly as he scanned the front page.
Tossing the newspaper aside, he kept laughing. "Let them kill each other! The more chaotic the New World gets, the better it is for me. Ideally, both the Marines and the Three Emperors Alliance will bleed each other dry."
—
In Gran Tesoro, the Golden Emperor Tesoro lowered his own newspaper, a cold sneer tugging at his lips. "Two Admirals alone dealt this much damage to the Three Emperors Alliance? There's no way. Just two admirals couldn't inflict losses on that scale."
"Boss, you mean there's something else behind this?" Baccarat, standing nearby, asked in a teasing tone.
Tesoro sneered again. "The Admirals are monsters, no doubt. But two admirals taking down three emperors? That's pushing it. And look at this—Kaido and Marco's bounties have shot up way too high, far beyond even Whitebeard and Roger. I really can't picture Fujitora and Aramaki, two freshly appointed admirals, defeating those two beasts on their own."
Baccarat listened, brows knitting slightly in confusion. Tesoro's grin turned darker. "The World Government must've deployed some hidden trump card this time. Otherwise, there's absolutely no way the Three Emperors Alliance would suffer losses like this."
"Still, according to the intel, even though they were hit hard, most of their main forces remain intact. Give them a little time, and they'll definitely bounce back."
—
"It's about time I made my move as well."
Somewhere in the New World, Sir Crocodile, who had been quietly lurking in the shadows, felt his moment finally arrive. The sudden rise of the Three Emperors Alliance and their rapid expansion across the New World had thrown many of his plans into disarray. He'd been furious—but there was nothing he could do.
After all, even the most flawless scheme crumbles before overwhelming force.
Even Red‑Haired Shanks, a Yonko, had been forced to back off once the Three Emperors Alliance formed. What chance did he have as a former Shichibukai? But now, things were different. After two major Marineford campaigns against the Three Emperors Alliance, tens of thousands of their people had been killed or wounded. No matter how strong they were, they had to be quietly licking their wounds now.
Next, it would be his turn to act.
All across the New World, countless pirates saw a chance opening up before them.
The Three Emperors Alliance had lost tens of thousands of pirates in this war alone—a blow that was anything but small.
On top of that, not long ago, the alliance had also clashed with the Marines on Cake Island. In less than half a year since its formation, the Three Emperors Alliance had already fought two large-scale battles against the rulers of the sea, Marineford. The Marines had paid a heavy price, but the pirates had bled just as much.
Because of this, pirates dreaming of taking the heads of the Emperors were starting to stir. The New World was now effectively under the rule of the Three Emperors Alliance, while the last remaining Emperor had already been driven out and was rumored to be living in quiet retirement in the East Blue.
In the end, the grand war between the Three Emperors Alliance and Marineford had been a lose-lose affair. Now, to many eyes, the seas were shining with opportunity—a perfect moment to make a name for themselves.
Meanwhile, in the East Blue—Foosha Village
After withdrawing from the New World, the Red-Haired Pirates had dropped anchor there.
Shanks stared down at the newspaper in his hand, his expression uncharacteristically grave. "I never expected this… Your strength has become terrifying, Marco."
He truly hadn't imagined that in less than half a year since he'd left the New World, Marco would be hailed as the strongest man in the world.
Shanks had originally believed that, after Whitebeard, the title of strongest would fall to Kaido. After all, Kaido's power after awakening his Devil Fruit was enough to make even him wary. Yet Marco's growth had far exceeded his expectations—so fast it almost felt unnatural.
Behind him, Benn Beckman took a drag on his cigarette and asked calmly, "Are we going to keep staying in Foosha Village? Or do we have any other plans?"
Shanks fell silent.
Even though the Three Emperors' Alliance had taken heavy losses, the three emperors still stood. If the Red Hair Pirates rushed back into the New World now, they'd almost certainly be marked as targets. Shanks didn't believe his crew could go head-to-head with the Three Emperors Alliance as things stood.
"Boss! Boss…!" At that moment, the ship's doctor, Hongou, came running over, barely able to contain himself. "Congratulations, boss!"
Shanks, a little confused, smiled and asked, "Hongou, what's got you so happy?"
"It's not me, it's you, boss!" Hongou sauntered over with a mischievous grin, chuckling. "Makino-san just said she wasn't feeling well and asked me to take a look. Guess what I found?"
The whole crew leaned in, curiosity piqued, as Hongou announced excitedly, "Makino-san is pregnant!"
"What?!" The Red Hair Pirates all stared, eyes wide.
Hongou's grin grew even wider. "That's why I said you should be congratulated, boss! You're going to be a father soon."
At that, Shanks immediately grabbed his head in distress. "No way, how could this happen so suddenly? I wasn't prepared at all!"
"Congratulations, boss!"
"Looks like we're all going to be uncles now!"
"I wonder if it'll be a boy or a girl!"
"We already have Uta, so a boy would be best."
The Red Hair Pirates started teasing him one after another.
Shanks quickly made up his mind. "Alright, lads, leave the money behind—and get ready to set sail from Foosha Village."
The crew blinked in surprise at his sudden decision. Benn Beckman frowned slightly and asked, "You're not going to wait until your child is born?"
"Idiot. As a man, how can I let family ties hold back my voyage at sea?" Shanks broke into a wide grin. He had decided to follow his captain's example; as long as his child went out to sea one day, they would meet again sooner or later. There was no need to cling to formalities.
Hearing this, several crew members immediately gave him a thumbs-down and booed, openly showing their contempt for their captain.
Benn Beckman, however, just chuckled. "You're doing this to protect her, aren't you?"
At those words, a trace of longing flickered in Shanks's eyes. "Yeah. If the Marines found out about my relationship with Makino, then not just Makino—the whole Foosha Village could be in danger. The only thing we can do now is keep our distance from Foosha. The farther we are, the safer they'll be."
"That's right," Benn said with a relieved smile. "We're ruthless pirates. Getting mixed up with us never leads anywhere good."
Shanks stepped to the bow and shouted, his voice booming over the deck, "Lads! We're heading back to the New World!"
"Huh…?" A murmur of confusion spread through the crew.
"Are we going back again?" Benn Beckman asked.
Shanks grinned. "Yeah, we've got to go back sooner or later. Even if we end up facing the Three Emperors Alliance when we do… well! We can't keep hiding from them, can we? What's coming will come eventually."
Marineford.
After Sengoku took up the position of Fleet Admiral again, the workload on his shoulders only grew heavier. All of this should have been Sakazuki's headache—but there was nothing to be done. Sakazuki had fallen in the Whole Cake Island War. In the end, his retirement as fleet admiral had been completely meaningless.
Now, Kizaru had also died in battle.
Officially, the Marines announced that Admiral Kizaru had succumbed to an illness and passed away. The news was buried in a tiny corner of the newspaper, with no follow‑up reports at all.
If the world learned that Kizaru had also been killed by pirates, the impact would have been earth‑shattering. The Marines had no choice but to handle it this way.
After all, the World Government still held absolute control over public discourse. Morgans, that big bird who ran the news, had wanted to publish a very different story.
But in this era, with the Three Emperors Alliance on the rise, the World Government had resorted to direct force to seize back that control. Even Morgans was now under strict surveillance by World Government agents, unable to spread news as freely as before.
"Sigh… a new admiral, huh?" Sengoku stared at the list of candidates the World Government had sent him, feeling a headache coming on.
The World Government had recommended three people for the position of Marine Admiral. The choice itself was left to Sengoku as Fleet Admiral, but the final approval would still rest with the Gorosei.
The first candidate was, of course, Momousagi Gion, a vice admiral and one of Marineford's admiral candidates.
The second was also a Marineford vice admiral, who simultaneously served as director of the Marine Criminal Investigation Bureau: Kurouma Tensei.
The last candidate was a bit unusual—he was actually a Celestial Dragon and a member of the God's Knights: Figarland Gorum.
He was the son of Saint Figarland Garling, one of the current Gorosei, and the younger brother of Saint Figarland Shamrock, commander of the God's Knights.
Seeing these three candidates only made Sengoku's headache worse. This wasn't three options at all—it was clearly just one. If he didn't choose Figarland Gorum, wouldn't that be the same as openly disrespecting a Celestial Dragon? And not just any celestial dragon, but a member of the God's Knights.
If Figarland Gorum became the new marine admiral, Sengoku wasn't particularly worried about his combat power. The strength of the God's Knights had already been proven during the Egghead Island War.
What truly concerned him was that, if this went through, Marine authority would slowly be eaten away by the World Government.
The Marines had always operated under the World Government, but they also upheld their own brand of justice. For hundreds of years, the world government had rarely interfered directly in marine internal affairs. Now, suddenly assigning a member of the God's Knights to serve as an admiral made Sengoku uneasy in a way he couldn't ignore.
After all, if Figarland Gorum became an admiral, then the next step could very well be fleet admiral—and at that point, the Marines would completely lose the right to choose their own leadership.
Yet what choice did Sengoku have right now? He could only comply with the will of the Gorosei.
He could only hope that once Gorum took the position of admiral, he wouldn't still go around calling Marines "insects."
