Chapter 38 - The Witch of The Market

The following morning was a normal routine. Elyra ignored Samara the whole way.

They ate breakfast at the same table but might as well have been in different rooms. Elyra's eyes never met hers. Her lips never smiled. She finished her meal quickly and left without a word, her footsteps sharp against the stone floor.

Samara stared at her empty bowl.

So this is how it is now.

After breakfast, Madam Gasel gathered a group of maids in the main corridor. Her sharp eyes scanned the crowd, landing on Samara.

"You," she said, pointing. "You will go with the others to town. We need supplies from the market."

Samara was confused for a second.

"Am I not to be appointed to a specific wing?" she asked. "I thought I was assigned to the east wing."

Madam Gasel scrutinised her, her eyes narrowing. Then she spread a smile that did not quite reach her eyes.

"Of course. You will join the east wing tomorrow. But as for today..." She waved her hand toward the courtyard. "The market."
