Chapter 37 - The Proposition

Samara ate in silence.

The bread was fresh. The soup was rich. She hated how much she enjoyed it. Caelion watched her from across the fire, his green eyes unreadable, his white hair catching the glow of the embers.

"What now?" she said, her cheeks full with food.

Caelion looked amused. Sometimes she acted like she did not have a care in the world. Other times she was ready to jump out of windows. He was beginning to realize that both versions of her were real. Both versions were dangerous. Both versions made him want her more.

"As I said," he replied, leaning back in his chair, "you eat first. Then we discuss your escape plans. Is that not what you wanted?"

She swallowed. "You know, I was thinking."

"Dangerous habit."
