Under the night sky, on the rolling waves of the open sea.
The Bianca sailed smoothly.
Gibbs stood at the helm, raised a bottle of rum, took a massive swig, and shook his head in pure satisfaction. This life? It was paradise.
Caught up in the moment, Gibbs started humming a sea shanty.
Yo ho, yo ho...
On the deck, Carl, who was tagging along behind the other pirates like a puppy and not feeling sleepy in the slightest, heard the tune. He thought it sounded awesome, so he ran up to Gibbs without a shred of shyness and asked to learn it.
Time flew.
Carl managed to party all the way until the break of dawn before finally running down to the lower deck. He didn't care about comfort; he just found a spot and passed out.
Before long, the sun was high, the ocean surface was shimmering with light, and the scenery was breathtaking.
Dexter and Bianca slept until past ten in the morning before waking up.
Hygiene wasn't really a thing when you were a pirate. On the open sea, fresh water was liquid gold.
So, the two of them just rubbed some salt on their teeth and called it a morning.
Naturally, Bianca hated it.
Fortunately, the discomfort was nothing compared to the thrill of drifting on the high seas as a pirate. She didn't dwell on it.
In the blink of an eye, it was afternoon.
Isla Cruces wasn't far.
The journey had been smooth. They had spotted a few ships, but they were far off in the distance, and nothing happened.
After another hour of sailing.
The water ahead was getting shallow; the Bianca couldn't go any further.
"Captain, we'll have to drop anchor here," Gibbs announced.
"Good. Lower the longboat. We're going ashore," Dexter said with a smile, genuinely excited.
He couldn't help it.
Isla Cruces!
Davy Jones's heart was buried right under that sand!
Soon, he would have the heart. Then, he'd find someone to take a knife and give that heart a little poke...
Heh.
At that point, the Flying Dutchman would basically be under his command.
With that kind of firepower, who in the entire Caribbean would dare to mess with him?
As for the chest requiring a key...
Not a problem. It was just a chest. He didn't need a key; he just needed time. It wasn't that hard to break a lock if you didn't care about the condition of the box.
What's that saying? With enough patience and elbow grease, you can grind an iron rod down to a needle.
He wasn't worried.
Sitting in the longboat, Dexter got more excited the more he thought about it.
Before long.
The group successfully landed on the island.
The island was deserted, and the beach was incredibly pristine—a sight for sore eyes.
Dexter, pipe in mouth, took the lead. As he walked, his eyes scanned the area, looking for the geographical landmarks from the movie where the heart was buried.
He searched and searched.
Ding.
Found it!
He reached the spot, looked around carefully to confirm, and flashed a brilliant smile. He stomped his foot on the ground and called out to Gibbs. "Gibbs, this is the spot. Dig!"
"Aye!" Gibbs responded enthusiastically.
In moments.
Leading a few equally excited pirates, Gibbs dug rapidly.
They dug and dug.
Clang!
A crisp sound rang out.
"Stop!" Hearing the noise, Dexter immediately halted Gibbs and the others. He knelt by the pit and started clearing the sand with his hands.
Bianca and the others watched with unblinking eyes, desperate to know what was at the bottom of the hole.
Shortly after, a portion of an antique-looking metal chest was revealed.
The excitement on everyone's faces spiked.
Another minute passed.
Dexter gave a heave and pulled the metal chest out. He grinned. "Found it!"
"Captain, what's inside?" Gibbs couldn't help but ask first, his eyes glued to the chest.
Carl's eyes were shining. "Dexter, is it gold?"
Bianca's eyes were sparkling too; she was thrilled.
Dexter smirked triumphantly. "Not gold. Something much, much better than gold."
He stepped back slightly. "I don't have the key, so I can't open it yet. But you guys can press your ears against it and listen."
"Bianca, you want to go first?"
Bianca was indeed eager. Hearing this, she nodded immediately, moved over quickly, and pressed her ear against the chest.
One second, two seconds, three seconds...
Whoosh!
Bianca's face went pale. She scrambled backward in terror, lost her balance, and landed on her butt in the sand. She looked at Dexter with pure horror. "You knew what was inside, didn't you?"
Prank successful. Dexter was delighted, his face full of mirth. "Of course!"
"And you still made me listen? You bastard, you scared me on purpose!" Bianca shouted angrily.
"No, no, absolutely not. Why would I scare you on purpose? Do I look like that kind of person?" Dexter denied it with a laugh.
"Yes, you do!" Bianca huffed.
By now, Carl couldn't wait any longer. He moved in and pressed his ear tightly against the metal chest.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump...
The sound of a beating heart traveled clearly into Carl's ear.
Carl heard it, but he couldn't process what it was. He was confused. "??? It sounds like something is beating. What is it, Dexter?"
Gibbs couldn't wait either. "My turn!"
A few seconds later.
Gibbs recoiled sharply, backing away from the chest. He looked at Dexter in shock. "Captain, why does it sound like there's a living heart inside that box?"
The moment those words came out.
The other pirates, who had been preparing to take a listen, froze. They looked at Dexter with dread.
"Sharp ears, Gibbs!" Dexter laughed. "That is indeed a living heart inside."
With the confirmation, the pirates were spooked.
"Captain, how can a heart be alive on its own?"
"What the hell is going on?"
"Captain, is this heart worth more than gold?"
"..."
The pirates started chattering nervously, talking over one another.
Dexter stood up leisurely. "Pick up the chest. I'll explain as we walk."
Gibbs was an excellent First Mate. Hearing the order, he didn't waste time and immediately barked at the pirates to get moving.
In the blink of an eye, the group began the trek back to the boat.
"The heart in that box belongs to a man who was heartbroken. Many years ago, for the sake of a woman, he cut it out himself."
"The man thought that without a heart, he wouldn't feel the pain anymore."
"Have any of you heard this story?"
Gibbs reacted the fastest. He stopped dead in his tracks, clear terror written all over his face. "Captain! Are you talking about Davy Jones?"
Hiss~~~
The other pirates stopped walking in perfect unison.
Davy Jones?
The Davy Jones who kept a Kraken as a pet?
We just dug up Davy Jones's heart?
If Davy Jones comes looking for his heart, what happens to us?
We're dead!
Instantly, two of the pirates looked ready to bolt.
There was no other reason for it.
It was Davy Jones.
