3:47 AM
No one spoke for a long time.
Alyx lay on her side, her head resting on Marshall's chest. Lily was curled against him, one leg tangled with Alyx's. Marshall had an arm around each of them, holding them, protecting them.
"Are you okay?" he asked finally.
"Mm," said Lily, eyes closed.
"Better than okay," said Alyx.
Marshall smiled in the darkness. "Me too."
Lily sat up just enough to look at them both. Her eyes were bright, but not with sadness.
"You know what the best part of all this is?"
"What?" asked Alyx.
"Tomorrow isn't going to be weird. We're going to wake up, and everything will be the same. But better."
"Because it's ours," said Marshall. "This is ours."
Alyx smiled. "It always has been."
They kissed, the three of them, in a way that was more promise than desire. Then they settled into bed, finding comfortable positions, finding places to fit.
Marshall stayed awake a little longer, listening to the breathing of the two women he loved. One on each side. Their heartbeats, almost synchronized.
He thought about how far they had come. About the breakup, the pain, the distance. About how Alyx had left to find herself, and how she had returned to find them. About how Lily had asked for forgiveness, and how they had learned to forgive. About how he had learned to be strong and soft at the same time.
And he thought he wouldn't change anything. Not the pain, not the waiting, not the sleepless nights. Because all of it had brought them here. To this bed. To this moment. To this.
He closed his eyes and let himself drift to sleep.
The Next Morning – 9:15 AM
Alyx woke first.
Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the room. To her left, Lily slept deeply, her hair tousled, an expression of absolute peace on her face. To her right, Marshall snored softly, an arm still around them both.
Alyx smiled.
She remembered the night before—every kiss, every caress, every word whispered in the darkness—and felt her chest fill with something warm, something she didn't have a name for but recognized as home.
Lily stirred, mumbled something unintelligible, and curled closer to Alyx.
"Shhhh," Alyx whispered, stroking her hair. "Sleep."
"Mmmmm."
Marshall also moved, drawing them closer.
"Is it daytime yet?" he murmured.
"Yes. But it's okay. You can keep sleeping."
"You too," said Marshall without opening his eyes.
"I can't. I'm too happy."
Marshall smiled. He opened one eye, looked at her. "Me too."
Lily grumbled again. "Can you stop being happy out loud? I'm trying to sleep."
They laughed, quietly so as not to fully wake her, but Lily was already awake, even if she didn't want to admit it.
"Okay," she said, sitting up on an elbow. "Since we're all awake..."
"Yes?" asked Alyx.
Lily smiled—that mischievous smile Marshall loved so much. "Someone make coffee, and then... we can pick up where we left off."
Marshall sat up so fast he almost fell out of bed.
"I'll get the coffee."
Alyx and Lily laughed as he practically ran out of the room.
"I love you," said Alyx, looking at Lily.
"I love you too."
"And him."
"And him."
They kissed—a slow, warm kiss full of promises.
When Marshall returned with three steaming mugs, he found them in bed, waiting for him, the sheets slightly fallen, with conspiratorial smiles.
"Have I ever told you that you're the best thing that ever happened to me?" he asked.
"Several times," said Lily.
"But it never hurts to repeat it," said Alyx.
Marshall set the mugs on the nightstand and climbed back into bed.
And the morning continued.
Living Room, 2030
"And so, kids, that night and that morning, three people remembered why they were together. They didn't need to say it. It was in every glance, every caress, every shared heartbeat."
Ted smiles, eyes bright.
"I never asked them exactly what happened that night. I didn't need to. You could see it on their faces. In the way they looked at each other. In the peace that enveloped them."
"And how did you know, Dad?" asks Ted's daughter.
"Because the next day, when I saw them at MacLaren's, they were different. More relaxed. More complete. As if they had found something they'd been searching for a long time."
Ted raises his imaginary glass.
"To the nights that aren't told. To the mornings that change everything. And to love, kids, that comes in all shapes and sizes. Even in threes."
