Chapter 499 - Psychic Calamity

Led by members of the Ordo Sinister, the procession rode the heavy lift platforms up to the surface of the permafrost.

The Eight-Legs drifted in a neat, compliant chain behind Axion, their grasping manipulator claws drawn tight against their chassis. A ferocious polar gale howled across the barren expanse.

From the hull of Calamity's Judgment, a faint, churning luminescence of oily black empyrean energy pulsed uncontrollably, bleeding an aura of absolute, suffocating despair into the air. While the Custodians possessed the spiritual fortitude to withstand the pressure, the baseline mortal tech-adepts were seized by a profound, paralyzing dread. Desperate to maintain their composure, they retreated as far from the Warlord Titan as possible, setting up their heavy logic-pict arrays for long-range observation.

Axion, entirely unburdened by a mortal soul, remained utterly immune to the warp-born desolation.

At its silent command, a detachment of Eight-Legs swept out across the snow-choked waste. Utilizing the raw elements of the environment, they constructed several targets measuring over ten meters in height out of compressed ice and hardened permafrost within a matter of minutes.

Axion established a direct uplink with the comm-arrays of Calamity's Judgment.

The directive was issued, and the trials began.

For the primary trial, Calamity's Judgment discharged its Hand of Darkness through conventional methodologies. A sphere of abyssal energy coalesced within the barrel of the weapon mounted to the left arm before lancing across the flats like a localized comet.

The distant ice-construct was instantaneously engulfed in a shroud of absolute blackness. Destructive, violently volatile psychic energies erupted within the target, tearing open microscopic fissures in the fabric of reality, stripping the matter of its molecular bonds and casting the broken residue into the Warp.

Following Axion's next sequence of data-commands, the Titan's Princeps manipulated his neural interface to open a previously locked sub-menu.

He toggled the warp-conduction systems to draw directly from the newly installed psychic crystals.

The newly integrated manifold arrays and secondary dampeners immediately severed the torrent of raw, churning energy being siphoned from the captive psykers. In its place, the pure, pale-blue empyrean essence of the psychic crystals began flooding the war engine's internal power channels.

The nearby Custodians instantly felt the psychic pressure radiating from the Titan skyrocket, yet the terrifying, mind-splitting aura of malicious dread that had previously clung to the machine vanished. The shroud of black light enveloping the chassis shifted into a magnificent, radiant sapphire hue.

The localized warp-lightning and psychic storms that crackled across the Titan's cranium and rear carapace flared into brilliant blue-white arcs, their visible intensity surging by several magnitudes. The power was so volatile that the outer armor plating began to suffer minute structural stress fractures, unable to seamlessly contain the sheer density of the power.

Simultaneously, a counter-current of empyrean energy channeled through the Necrotechica systems worked frantically to stitch the armor back together, locking the hull into a bizarre, hyper-stressed state of perpetual structural equilibrium. This violent balance caused the crown and upper back plates of the Titan to burn with a blinding, pristine white radiance, imparting a surreal, terrifying sense of the divine.

At Axion's command, the Princeps unleashed the Hand of Darkness a second time. The pale-blue energy condensed and struck the next target.

Yet, despite harboring a raw psychic density that far eclipsed the previous shot, the manifestation yielded a radically different result. Frost and crackling lightning detonated across the target simultaneously, but the sheer, reality-ripping kinetic destruction was far inferior to the first output.

The final phase of the trials was slated for the hybrid-conduction mode.

The raw, unfiltered warp-essence harvested from the captive psykers and the purified currents drawn from the psychic crystals were channeled to merge within the newly reinforced power manifolds. This was the critical nexus of the entire experiment.

The failure was instantaneous.

The purified psychic energy acted like a highly reactive, volatile chemical catalyst upon coming into contact with the raw warp-bleed. It expanded exponentially, the cascading surge tearing through Axion's newly installed containment field rings and dampener modules.

Axion immediately commanded a hard-cutoff of the Titan's internal power routing, but the energy within the psychic crystals had already been compromised by several deep-blue glyphs that manifested out of the void. The crystals continued to violently bleed energy until they disintegrated into glittering, ash-like shards and vanished.

The runaway pale-blue psychic backflash surged up the primary conduits and breached the Titan's command cockpit, slamming directly into the Alpha-grade psykers who were already howling in chemical agony.

Boom!

A catastrophic explosion detonated before the observers could even register the threat.

The colossal mechanical head of the Warlord Titan shattered from the inside out. Within the command deck, the Princeps was instantly reduced to a fine red mist by a storm of supersonic shrapnel. Deprived of all containment, a towering column of raw psychic energy erupted from the three psykers, converging into a single, blinding geyser of light that punched into the heavens.

"WE WILL HAVE OUR VENGEANCE!!!"

In that singular, horrifying instant, a multi-layered, overlapping roar echoed directly within the souls of over half the population of Holy Terran soil. The sheer weight of the malice, hatred, and unadulterated agony carried in that psychic voice was staggering.

The immense column of psychic light twisted into a violent vortex against the polar sky as the three Alpha-grade psykers were burned down to cinders within the glare.

Under normal circumstances, a single Alpha-class psyker possessed the catastrophic potential to bring an Imperial world to its knees, their unbridled thoughts capable of warping the localized physical laws of an entire planet. Calamity's Judgment had been housing three of them.

Worse still, the psychic crystals engineered by Axion possessed an apocalyptic energy density. Under the kinetic and spiritual impact of the backflash, the physical vessels of the Alpha psykers ruptured, unleashing their collective warp-potency in a singular, unrestricted blast.

Deep beneath the bedrock of the Imperial Palace, the withered husk resting upon the Golden Throne flared with a blinding, majestic golden brilliance.

A singular, transcendent consciousness within the Immaterium worked with monumental effort to anchor and stabilize the psychic shockwaves ripping through Terra's sub-space.

The tempestuous psychic shockwave rolled across the face of Holy Terra. Within the Hollow Mountain, the unfortunate Kindling of the Astronomican were incinerated wholesale, bursting into raging pyres of warp-flame as the psychic backlash washed over them. Only the most veteran, highly trained Master Kindling, those who possessed absolute, microscopic control over their own psychic thresholds, managed to avoid being instantly consumed by their own igniting power.

The light of the Astronomican, which had burned uninterrupted for ten millennia, suddenly exploded in brilliance.

Its searing, blinding radiance within the Immaterium practically pierced through the suffocating occlusion of the Great Rift. Even along the northern frontiers of the Dark Imperium, that impossibly bright, holy beacon could be seen cutting through the warp-murk.

On the polar flats, the sky-piercing column of pale-blue psychic light abruptly corrupted into a sickening, visceral crimson.

The veil of reality was violently torn asunder. A colossal warp rift split open across the polar sky, its edges knitting into the unmistakable, jagged geometry of the eight-pointed Star of Chaos. The profane brand was so massive it could be seen clearly from low orbit.

The concentrated fury and desire for vengeance of three dying Alpha psykers had been more than enough to draw the personal gaze of Khorne, the Blood God.

"KILL!!!"

A soul-shattering bellow reverberated from the depths of the warp rift, triggering a wave of uncontrollable, murderous rage and bloodlust within the hearts of every mortal present. Thick, boiling crimson fog poured out of the rupture, cascading toward the frozen earth below.

Within the rolling mist, a countless host of Khornate daemons began to manifest.

Through its energy-spectrum vision, Axion could see the phenomenon with absolute clarity: dense currents of pale-gold energy were flooding the atmosphere, desperately attempting to compress and suffocate the expanding crimson tides.

A pack of Bloodletters came shrieking out of the rift, violently hurled from the deeper mist by a massive, towering silhouette that loomed within the red fog. The moment these Bloodletters stepped beyond the perimeter of the crimson mist, they erupted into agonized shrieks.

The gold-hued atmospheric energy began eating away at their unnatural flesh like a virulent acid, pitting their bodies with gaping holes until they crumbled into ash and vanished into nothingness.

Axion panned its ocular sensors across the immediate perimeter.

The mysterious tech-adepts were shrouded in a faint, protective shimmer; their heavy robes were clearly outfitted with specialized warding matrices. A vanguard of Custodians was already moving with synchronized precision, forcefully evacuating the adepts from the immediate hot zone.

The remaining Custodian warriors brought their golden Guardian Spears to bear, opening fire into the churning red fog with devastating, synchronized volleys of bolt-fire. The thunderous, rhythmic roar of exploding kraken-bolts tore through the freezing air behind Axion.

Deep within the subterranean vaults below, the remaining four Warlord-class Psi-Titans were already being brought to emergency ignition.

A combined strike force consisting of the Imperial Fists, the Legio Custodes, the Adepta Sororitas, and the Lucifer Black regiments was already mobilised, roaring out from the hive cities of Terra toward the northern polar wastes at maximum speed.

The catastrophic anomaly triggering across Holy Terra had thrown the high command of the Imperium into absolute panic. Huge swathes of the Astra Militarum stationed throughout Segmentum Solar were issued immediate, overriding decrees to redeploy to Terra with utmost urgency.

Roboute Guilliman, while frantically coordinating the Ultramarines and ordering several of his Primarch brothers to race toward Terra with reinforcements, boarded his command transport and charted a direct course for the North Pole. As the Son of the Emperor swept toward the war zone, his mind was utterly consumed by a bitter, crushing weight of self-reproach.

Axion did not waste a single microsecond, instantly establishing a command link to its heavy carriers still loitering in low orbit, ordering them to drop its mechanical legions directly into the fray.
