Chapter 161: The Sea of White Bones
"Indeed, we must set out immediately. This matter concerns the thousand year future of the Snake People Tribe," several elders agreed with solemn expressions. However, one of them voiced concern:
"But given the gravity of this situation, we cannot afford to send all of our forces. We don't know what dangers lie within these ruins."
"The elder's words hold merit." Medusa nodded slightly, her gaze sweeping over the gathered crowd.
"Yue Mei, Hua Rou'er, the two of you will accompany me. That will suffice."
"Your Majesty!"
"Your Majesty!"
The other leaders of the Snake People Tribe turned pale.
"The call is so powerful, it will surely attract other strong individuals. There may also be dangers inherent in the ruins themselves."
"No more objections," Medusa said, shaking her head gently.
"If it is truly dangerous, sending more people will not help. Focus on guarding the Holy City."
With that, a pair of magnificent Dou Qi wings spread behind her.
"Your Majesty, in that case, allow this old one to accompany you." One of the four Grand Elders stepped forward and spoke with reverence.
"Very well," Medusa agreed after a brief pause. She transformed into a radiant streak of light and flew toward the source of the call.
Following her lead, two other graceful Snake People women and the elderly Grand Elder also took to the skies. Thus, the group comprising two Dou Huangs and two Dou Wangs set out together.
Ripples Across the Land
As Medusa's figure disappeared into the distance, a group of male Snake People looked on with worry etched across their faces. However, three powerful presences barred their way.
"Focus on your duties. Her Majesty's orders are not to be questioned," said one of the Grand Elders coldly.
"We wouldn't dare!" The Dou Wang ranked Snake People exchanged helpless glances and eventually withdrew.
The towering beam of seven colored light, however, drew more than just the Snake People. Across the surrounding regions of the Tagor Desert, countless strong individuals set out toward the source of the phenomenon.
Though the strongest of them were only at the Dou Huang level, news of the event quickly spread far beyond the desert. Forces from the southern regions of the Magic Beast Mountain Range and neighboring powers began mobilizing their own experts.
Xiao Yan, the cause of all this commotion, remained unaware of the stir his actions had caused. By now, he had reached the ancient city.
Entering the Ancient City
The city was vast, its area nearly ten times that of the Jia Ma Empire's capital. Walking through it on foot would have taken days. Unwilling to waste time, Xiao Yan flew directly to the city's center.
Upon arriving, even with his wealth of experience, Xiao Yan couldn't help but shiver at the scene before him.
The central area of the ancient city was covered in an endless expanse of white bones a sea of skeletons stretching as far as the eye could see.
At the very heart of this grisly display lay a massive serpent's skeleton, over a thousand meters long. Its bones bore deep claw marks and other scars, as though it had suffered catastrophic attacks. One particularly severe slash had nearly split the skeleton in two.
Despite the passage of thousands of years, a primal and desolate aura radiated from the colossal remains. The scars told of a titanic battle that had once raged here.
Surrounding the serpent's skeleton were countless other beast remains. These bones filled the entire central area of the city, with even the smallest of them stretching dozens of meters. Several massive skeletons exceeded one hundred meters in length, indicating their owners had been at least seven tier magical beasts equivalent to Dou Zong level human experts.
Altogether, there were hundreds of such remains, including nearly ten from eight tier magical beasts.
An Ancient Cataclysm
"What could have happened here to cause the deaths of so many powerful magical beasts? And that colossal serpent skeleton could it be the remains of the Seven Colored Demon Saint?" Xiao Yan muttered, his voice tinged with disbelief.
Even Xiao Wen and Xiao Wu, the two semi saints standing behind him, couldn't hide their shock.
Hundreds of seven tier magical beasts, nearly ten eight tier beasts, and the skeletal remains of a five star Dou Sheng level entity such a force would rival the top ranking powers of even the Xiao Clan's royal branches.
"I had thought the Seven Colored Demon Saint died a natural death," Xiao Yan said, his expression somber. "But it seems that both the Demon Saint and its followers perished in a battle of unimaginable scale."
The Truth of the Ruins
"Yu Mo, explain this to me!" Xiao Yan flicked his finger, and a black lotus appeared before him. Slowly, a black robed man emerged, his face eager to please.
"Yu Mo, what happened here?" Xiao Yan demanded.
"Ah, Young Master, what are you referring to?" Yu Mo started with a flattering smile but froze as he noticed the eerie atmosphere. A chill crawled up his spine, and he turned around hesitantly.
The sight of the skeletal sea caused his face to pale instantly. With a trembling body, he collapsed onto the black lotus in shock.
"Young Master... Is this... the Seven Colored Demon Saint?" Yu Mo stammered, his voice quivering with disbelief.
"The size of that skeleton makes it unmistakable. In the entire northwest, how many ninth tier magical beasts have ever existed?" Xiao Yan said coldly.
"You told me the Demon Saint had perished, but you failed to mention that it fell in such a manner. Judging by this scene, the Demon Saint must have fought an earth shattering battle before its death."
"I... I didn't know... I swear, I didn't know!" Yu Mo babbled, his expression dazed.
For someone like him, the Demon Saint represented an unimaginable level of strength. The thought that even such a being could fall in battle left him in turmoil.
Realizing Yu Mo truly knew nothing, Xiao Yan sighed and shook his head.
"Forget it. Perhaps only your ancestors knew what happened here."
"My ancestors? They passed away a thousand years ago!" Yu Mo muttered blankly.
"..."
Xiao Yan opened his mouth but found himself at a loss for words.
Toward the Inheritance
"Though these high tier magical beasts have perished, the city itself and the remains are surprisingly well preserved. The Seven Colored Demon Saint's inheritance must still be intact," Xiao Yan concluded.
Raising his gaze, he saw a vibrant seven colored orb of light glowing atop the serpent skeleton's skull. The orb radiated both danger and allure.
"Let's hope the inheritance is still there," Xiao Yan murmured. He took a step forward, heading toward the massive remains.
Yet, after only a few steps, an invisible barrier rippled in the air.
Suddenly, the once dead magical beast skeletons stirred. Bones shifted, and hollow sockets seemed to lock onto Xiao Yan.
The sea of white bones was awakening.
