Cherreads

Chapter 367 - Chapter 367 - The Weight of Words

Location: The Crucible Grounds - Arena Floor

Time: Present Day - Tournament Quarterfinals

The arena hummed with anticipation as Caspian Jerkins and Jace Torrent stepped onto the floor. The holographic banners flickered, displaying their names in bold, shimmering script. The crowd's roar was a mixture of cheers and jeers—two fighters, each with something to prove.

Caspian moved with a mechanical precision, his body operating like a well-oiled machine. His aethernova suit pulsed with a dull, earthen glow—warm and heavy, like the soil after a rain. The light radiated from his core in steady pulses, each one accompanied by a faint hum that seemed to vibrate through the air. He had no idea what the suit truly was—to him, it was simply a tool that released power outward, a blast of energy that erupted from its core.

Jace Torrent was his opposite. He moved with a chaotic energy, his body crackling with barely contained power. His aethernova suit flared with erratic bursts of light—sharp and unpredictable, like a storm wind that changed direction without warning. The energy around him was wild, untamed, a reflection of the man himself.

They stood across from each other, their gazes locked.

Caspian's voice was calm, almost condescending. "I'll go easy on you. If you find yourself struggling, just accept defeat. I don't want to make you start crying."

Jace's laugh was sharp, cruel. "Oh, please. Jerkin brat. Just because your other brother is on some fairy tale winning streak doesn't mean you're in it. Eventually, you and him will both be sent back home packing to your papa darling."

The crowd erupted in laughter. Some pointed at Caspian, their voices carrying a note of mockery.

"Look at him! He thinks he's hot stuff!"

"Another Jerkin who can't back up his words!"

Caspian's jaw tightened. His eyes blazed with barely contained fury.

The Stands

Elijah sat beside Grace, his hand resting on hers. She was sitting stiffly, her gaze fixed on the arena floor, her expression one of dull emptiness. She had barely spoken to him since the revelation of his true identity.

Won't you talk to me? Elijah thought, his internal voice carrying a note of quiet frustration. Won't you even look at me?

He squeezed her hand gently, his voice soft and earnest. "I know I never intended to be in a relationship right now. But I'll take care of you. I promise."

Grace's gaze remained fixed on the arena. But her hand tightened around his—a small, almost imperceptible gesture of acceptance.

VIP Section

Brenna's lips curved into a knowing smile. "Your brother—I didn't know he was those romantic types."

Jericho's gaze was fixed on Leo and Grace, his expression one of speechless shock. His mouth hung slightly open, his eyes wide with disbelief.

Nikolai Morozov leaned forward, his voice carrying a note of dark amusement. "You need to be careful, Jericho. Or you might swallow a fly." He paused, his grin widening. "It appears your brother has more game than you."

Dhivya Rana nodded, her voice carrying a note of playful agreement. "Yeah, if we're at it—if he ends up getting more attention than you to the point where he starts being the new base golden child, I'd be down with it."

Nikolai laughed. "Me too. What about you, Valerik?"

Valerik forced out an awkward smile, his eyes darting away from Jericho's gaze. "I... I mean..."

Jericho stared at him, his expression one of cold expectation. Valerik's smile faltered, his voice dropping to an apologetic murmur.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I didn't mean—"

Jericho's gaze shifted back to the arena, his expression unreadable.

The Arena

The music that began to play was dark and haunting, its melody carrying a note of desperate longing.

"Take me to the place where the shadows fall,

Where the weight of the world is a heavy shawl,

They drag me down to the gutter and call,

But I won't give a damn, I won't give at all..."

The lyrics wove through the arena, each word a reflection of Caspian's struggle.

"The fire within me will run and tie,

Will burn through the lies, will never die,

They can take my name, they can take my pride,

But they'll never take what's deep inside..."

Caspian's voice was sharp, a warning. "Careful now. I did warn you."

Jace's laugh was cruel, mocking. "Oh, please. I know you cry in your bed all night, wondering why you're so lame compared to your brothers."

Caspian's face flushed. His hands clenched into fists, his voice carrying a note of raw fury.

"Hey now! Who told you that?!"

The crowd laughed, their voices a chorus of mockery.

Caspian's body moved before his mind could catch up. He lunged forward, his voice carrying a note of desperate rage.

"Now you want some candy?!"

---

Caspian's front right leg swung toward Jace's left leg, the kick slow and clumsy. Jace's body shifted, his left leg sliding back just enough to avoid the impact.

Caspian's right front punch arced toward Jace's left chest. Jace twisted, the punch grazing his side but missing its mark.

Caspian's right front punch followed, aimed at Jace's face. Jace bent backward, the punch passing harmlessly over his head.

And then Jace moved.

His legs wrapped around Caspian's torso, his body coiling like a snake. He twisted, using his momentum to flip Caspian upward. Caspian's body spun through the air, his arms flailing, his aethernova suit flaring with erratic bursts of earthen light.

He crashed into the ground with a sickening thud. The impact sent shockwaves through the arena floor, dust rising in spiraling clouds.

Jace was on him in an instant. His fist connected with Caspian's chin, snapping his head to the side. Another punch to his ear, followed by a brutal hold that pinned him in place.

Jace's hands grabbed Caspian's waist, lifting him off the ground. He arched backward, his body bending like a bow, and flung Caspian over his head in a devastating arc.

Caspian crashed into the ground again, his body limp, his aethernova suit flickering weakly.

The crowd erupted. Their cheers were deafening, their voices carrying a note of bloodthirsty excitement.

"Finish him!"

"Yeah! Kill the bastard!"

Jace stood over Caspian, his boot pressing down on the fallen man's chest. His voice was cold, triumphant.

"Stay down," he said, his words sharp and cruel. "That's where you belong. In the dusty ground."

---

Caspian's eyes were open, staring at the sky. His breath came in short, ragged gasps. His aethernova suit flickered and died.

Jace's boot remained on his chest, a symbol of his complete dominance.

The crowd's cheers continued, a relentless wave of sound that seemed to wash over the arena.

And somewhere in the stands, Elijah watched. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes held a flicker of something—concern, perhaps, or calculation.

What just happened? he thought. What did I just witness?

The music continued to play, its melody a haunting backdrop to the scene.

"The fire within me will run and tie,

Will burn through the lies, will never die..."

---

The arena was silent, save for the hum of the music. Caspian lay on the ground, his body broken, his spirit crushed.

Jace removed his boot, turning to the crowd with a triumphant grin.

"Anyone else want some?" he shouted, his voice carrying a note of arrogant challenge.

The crowd's roar was deafening.

And somewhere in the VIP section, Jericho Jerkin watched, his expression one of cold calculation.

What have I done? he thought. What have I allowed to happen?

But the thought was fleeting, buried beneath the weight of his own ambitions.

The game continued.

And no one was safe.
