Chapter 2 - EPISODE 2: SECOND GLANCE

Maple Valley — Morning (Two Days Later)

Maple Valley unfolded its mornings slowly.

Light didn't rush into the city—it settled.

It slipped through curtains, rested on rooftops, and lingered on quiet streets where shopkeepers lifted shutters with familiar ease.

A bicycle bell rang somewhere in the distance. The faint aroma of tea and fresh bread drifted through the air.

Near the university gates, the small roadside tea shop was already alive.

Steam rose from kettles, cups clinked, and a muted television flickered above the counter—talking about a world that felt far away.

Maple Valley listened… but never hurried.

Inside the Westridge boys' dorm—

Silence.

AUSTIN'S DORM ROOM — MORNING

Austin Carter opened his eyes.

No alarm.

No sudden movement.

Just awareness.

He lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling, as if finishing a thought that had followed him out of sleep.

Then, quietly, he sat up.

The room was minimal.

Ordered.

Predictable.

He stood and walked toward the mirror.

Each step carried no urgency—only routine.

He stopped in front of it.

And looked.

Not with pride. Not with doubt.

Just observation.

His hoodie hung loosely over a frame built with quiet discipline.

Beneath it, his body carried structure—lean muscle, controlled strength, the kind shaped through consistency rather than display.

His posture was naturally aligned, shoulders relaxed but steady.

Everything about him felt measured.

Composed.

Except his eyes.

They held something deeper—something that never fully rested.

A shift in the room broke the stillness.

The bathroom door opened.

Steam rolled out.

Kevin stepped out, a towel wrapped around his waist, another thrown over his shoulder as he dried his hair.

Energy followed him like a second presence.

He caught Austin's reflection and smirked.

"Are you planning to attend class today," Kevin said, "or is this a long-term staring contest with yourself?"

Austin didn't react immediately.

Kevin stepped closer, leaning slightly toward him.

"You've been looking at that mirror like it said something offensive," he added.

Austin blinked once.

"Just standing," he said.

Kevin laughed.

"Yeah, because you do everything like it's a philosophy."

He grabbed his shirt and pulled it on.

Kevin moved easily—confident, effortless.

The kind of presence people noticed without trying. A known face across campus.

A soccer player. Social gravity seemed to follow him.

"Go shower," Kevin added. "You look like you woke up mid-thought."

"I did," Austin replied, already walking past him.

Kevin grinned.

"That explains a lot."

BATHROOM

Water fell steadily.

Steam filled the air again.

Austin stood under the shower, letting the silence return.

For him, mornings didn't begin with noise.

They began with stillness.

DORM ROOM — LATER

Austin stepped out, dressed simply. Clean lines.

No excess.

Kevin was already ready, scrolling through his phone.

"Match this weekend," Kevin said. "You should come."

Austin picked up his bag.

"I've seen you play."

Kevin looked up.

"And?"

Austin paused.

"You're good."

Kevin smirked.

"That sounded painful for you to admit."

"It wasn't," Austin replied. "It's factual."

Kevin shook his head, amused.

"Same thing, coming from you."

CAMPUS PATHWAY — DAY

The campus pulsed with life.

Students moved in clusters. Conversations overlapped.

Laughter echoed across pathways lined with trees just beginning to turn gold.

Kevin walked ahead, greeting people with ease.

"Hey!"

"Practice later!"

"Don't skip again!"

A few girls waved. Some smiled longer than necessary.

Kevin responded naturally, like he belonged everywhere.

Austin walked beside him—

Present.

But separate.

ELECTIVE CLASSROOM — COMMUNICATION STUDIES

The room carried a mix of students from different departments. Conversations floated lightly as people settled in.

Austin took his usual seat—corner row. Controlled space.

He opened his notebook.

Wrote the date.

Nothing else.

The door opened.

Lisa walked in mid-conversation, her energy arriving before she did.

"…I swear, if I get lost again, I'm blaming the campus map," she said, laughing softly to someone behind her.

She scanned the room.

Looking for a seat.

Then—

She saw him.

The empty chair beside Austin.

She walked over and sat down, placing her bag beside her.

A quick glance.

Recognition.

A smile.

"Well," she said lightly, "no collision this time. That's progress."

Austin looked at her briefly.

Then back at his notebook.

"…Statistically."

Lisa laughed softly.

"I'll take it."

She looked around, then back at him.

"Wait… you're not in Journalism, right?"

"No."

"Then how are you here?"

A small pause.

"Elective."

Lisa nodded.

"Communication Studies?"

A slight nod from him.

She smiled, studying him.

"That's interesting. You don't really seem like someone who'd take communication."

"I don't."

She raised an eyebrow, amused.

"Then why?"

Austin closed his notebook.

"Understanding something doesn't require participating in it."

Lisa paused.

That… stayed.

She smiled again, softer this time.

"Okay… that's either deep or slightly concerning."

No response.

"I'm Lisa," she said. "Properly this time."

"Austin."

"I know," she replied easily.

He looked at her—just for a second.

"I remember things," she added. "Especially people who don't talk much."

A pause.

Then she smiled again.

"Easier to notice."

Austin didn't respond.

But he didn't withdraw either.

And that, in its own way, was something new.

CAMPUS — AFTERNOON

Classes ended.

Students spilled out into sunlight and conversation.

Lisa walked with Sophie, mid-laugh.

"So?" Sophie asked. "Interesting class?"

Lisa thought for a second.

"Yeah… actually."

There was a small pause.

"There's this one guy—"

She stopped herself.

Sophie immediately turned.

"Oh, we're already at 'this one guy' stage?"

Lisa shook her head, smiling.

"No, not like that. He's just… different."

They walked toward the street outside campus.

TEA SHOP STRIP

The familiar row of small shops buzzed with quiet life.

The tea shop stood at its usual corner—crowded, warm, constant.

Austin stood at the counter.

A cup of tea placed in front of him.

Above, the television played softly:

"New Atlantis update… authorities continue investigating the recent incident involving unidentified advanced technology…"

Austin glanced at the screen.

Just briefly.

Then back to his tea.

Across the road—

Lisa and Sophie walked past.

Lisa didn't notice him.

She was laughing at something Sophie said, her voice carrying lightly through the air.

Austin heard it.

Looked up.

Just slightly.

Not enough to call it attention.

But enough to register.

Lisa continued walking.

Unaware.

Austin watched for a moment—

Then looked away.
