Chapter 4 - EPISODE 4 : PARALLEL LINES

Maple Valley — Afternoon

The city carried two different energies at once.

On one side—movement, laughter,

conversation spilling into streets.

On the other—stillness, observation, thoughts left unspoken.

Maple Valley didn't choose between them.

It held both.

And today—

So did they.

— LISA & ETHAN STREET STRIP — DAY

Lisa walked ahead, scanning the street with curiosity.

Small shops lined the road—bookstores, cafés, a flower stall with fresh marigolds.

Ethan walked beside her, hands in his pockets, completely at ease.

"So," he said, glancing around, "what's the plan, journalist?"

Lisa smirked slightly.

"Observation. Real people. Real reactions."

Ethan nodded once.

"Or," he added, "we could just talk to them."

Lisa stopped walking and turned to him.

"That's not observation. That's interference."

Ethan smiled.

"Exactly."

She shook her head, amused despite herself.

"You're not going to take this seriously, are you?"

"I am," he replied calmly. "Just not the way you expect."

CAFÉ CORNER

They paused near a small café.

A couple sat across from each other—silent, tense.

Lisa leaned slightly forward.

"See that?" she said. "They're not talking, but everything's happening."

Ethan watched for a second.

Then—

"They're done," he said simply.

Lisa frowned.

"That's a big conclusion."

Ethan shrugged lightly.

"Look at their hands. No movement. No effort. That's not a fight—that's the end."

Lisa looked again.

This time—

She saw it.

A pause.

"Okay…" she admitted softly. "That's… actually good."

Ethan glanced at her.

"I know."

Not arrogance.

Just certainty.

FLOWER STALL — MOMENTS LATER

A vendor handed flowers to a girl, smiling warmly.

Ethan stepped closer casually.

"Do people smile like that because they mean it," he asked Lisa, "or because they're supposed to?"

Lisa considered it.

"Both," she said. "But you can tell the difference."

Ethan looked at her.

"And you always get it right?"

Lisa smiled slightly.

"I try."

Ethan held her gaze for a second—

Then looked away first.

AUSTIN & PHILIP RIVERSIDE WALKWAY — DAY

The river moved quietly, reflecting sunlight in broken fragments.

Austin stood near the railing.

Philip stood beside him, notebook already open.

"I've categorized non-verbal communication into three layers," Philip said.

"Physical gestures, spatial positioning, and behavioral repetition."

Austin didn't respond.

He was watching.

A man sat alone on a bench, staring at the water.

"What do you see?" Philip asked.

"Nothing," Austin said.

Philip blinked.

Then looked again.

"…He's alone."

"No," Austin replied.

"He's choosing to be."

Philip paused.

That shifted something.

He wrote it down.

PARK BENCH — LATER

A group of students laughed loudly nearby.

Philip looked slightly uncomfortable.

"They're communicating through noise," he said.

Austin shook his head slightly.

"They're avoiding silence."

Philip looked at him.

"That's… different."

Austin didn't elaborate.

He didn't need to.

LISA & ETHAN MARKET LANE — DAY

The street grew busier.

More people. More sound.

Ethan greeted someone casually in passing.

Another girl waved at him.

Lisa noticed.

"You know a lot of people."

"People know me," Ethan corrected.

Lisa raised an eyebrow.

"That sounds dangerous."

Ethan smirked.

"It depends on the person."

They walked a few steps in silence.

Then—

"You don't react much," Ethan said, glancing at her.

"To what?"

"To anything," he replied.

"Most people would've formed an opinion by now."

Lisa smiled faintly.

"I don't rush conclusions."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"Good."

A pause.

"You'll last longer that way."

AUSTIN & PHILIP TEA SHOP — EVENING

They stood near the familiar tea shop.

Steam rose from cups.

Conversations overlapped.

The television above played softly:

"New Atlantis authorities continue investigating the unidentified tech-related incident…"

Philip glanced up briefly.

"Strange," he said.

Austin's eyes stayed on the screen a second longer.

Then—

"Not really."

Philip looked at him.

"You think there's more to it?"

Austin picked up his tea.

"There always is."

Lisa and Ethan approached from the opposite side of the street.

Austin noticed first.

Just a glance.

Then—

Ethan laughed at something Lisa said.

Easy. Effortless.

Lisa smiled—not wide, but real.

Austin looked away.

Philip didn't notice anything.

LISA & ETHAN WALKING BACK - SUNSET

The light softened.

Shadows stretched longer.

"So," Ethan said, "we actually got work done."

Lisa nodded.

"Surprisingly."

Ethan smiled.

"You expected less."

"I expected chaos," she replied.

"That comes later," he said lightly.

Lisa glanced at him.

For a moment—

She studied him.

Not emotionally.

Just… observing.

Then she looked ahead again.

AUSTIN & PHILIP CAMPUS PATHWAY — SAME TIME

They walked back in silence.

Philip finally spoke.

"You don't say much," he said.

"No."

"But you notice everything."

Austin didn't respond.

Philip adjusted his glasses.

"That's… efficient."

Austin looked ahead.

"It's necessary."

Lisa walks under falling leaves.

Ethan beside her, talking lightly.

Austin walks through the same path moments later.

Philip beside him, flipping pages.

Same place.

Different timing.

Different worlds.

FINAL SCENE — AUSTIN'S ROOM (NIGHT)

Austin sat at his desk.

Notebook open.

He wrote—

"Some people speak to be heard…

some speak to be followed."

A pause.

Then he added—

"…and some don't need to speak at all."

He closed the notebook.
