Chapter 155 - Chunin Exams #14

Konohagakure No Sato :

Forest Of Death :

The clouds finally parted, peeling back to let the pale, silver moonlight spill into the clearing. It illuminated the wreckage—shattered timber, churned earth, and the smell of ozone and pine. Shizuka stared up at the figure standing before her, his Black-red cloak catching the light like a beacon.

Even with his voice still echoing in her ears, it felt like a dream, the kind of hazy, beautiful hallucination you have right before the end.

Suddenly , she saw a familiar puff of smoke nearby. But before she could even find her voice, she felt herself being lifted. It was gentle, effortless—a classic princess hold that made her breath hitch for an entirely different reason. She looked up and

(A shadow clone?)

She realized then that the real Naruto hadn't moved an inch from his spot in front of the beast. As the clone carried her away toward the safety of the treeline, she couldn't take her eyes off his back.

Naruto watched the clone retreat out of the corner of his eye. Once he was sure Shizuka was clear, he finally let out a long, ragged breath of relief and turned his full attention toward the monster. Now that the moonlight was hitting it directly, he could see the thing in all its terrifying glory.

It was a mountain of fur and spite, standing nearly seven meters tall on its hind legs. Shuriken and kunai were peppered across its chest like steel thorns, and shallow red lines marked where Shizuka's wind blades had tried—and failed—to bite deep. Its frame was a chaotic mix of explosive muscle and thick, defensive fat.

( The Chakra is at Jonin level )

Soon Naruto reccognised the Beast , which was

(...A Grizzly. A huge, chakra-mutated Grizzly.)

The second Naruto recognized the species, the bear seemed to return the favor. Its massive head tilted, and then it let out a roar that practically shook the marrow in Naruto's bones.

*ROARRRRR!*

Naruto's body tensed, his instincts screaming. Suddenly, a flood of information rushed into his mind—a memory transfer from the clone he'd left with Karin.

(A Jonin-level beast. Strength and speed that shouldn't belong to something that big, and a hide that can tank C-rank Ninjutsu like it's nothing and finally the senses that keeps targeting with pin-point accuracy ..... My only edge here is agility...)

Dealing with a bear was always a nightmare. They were relentless, and with Shizuka and the others still so close, a full-scale brawl was risky.

(First, I'll let the clones finish the evacuation. Once Karin and the guys are clear, I can just Hiraishin out of here. There's no point in a death match—)

*ROARRRRRR*

The thought died in his head. The bear dropped onto all fours, but it didn't charge. Instead, its massive snout twitched. Naruto watched through his heightened dynamic vision as the bear's expression shifted. The raw, murderous rage seemed to evaporate, replaced by a strange, sniffing curiosity.

(Wait... what's with this guy?)

Naruto stayed perfectly still, his hand tight on his kunai, ready to Body Flicker at a moment's notice. If the beast wanted to waste time sniffing the air, that was fine by him; it just gave the clones more time to get the team to safety.

Then, the bear stopped. Its entire body coiled with tension before it rose back onto its hind legs, towering over the clearing.

*ROOAAAAAARRRRRRRRRR...!!*

This roar was different. It was deafening, a primal blast of sound that left Naruto's ears ringing and his skin crawling. But as the echoes faded, Naruto didn't feel an attack coming. Instead, his "Hound Senses" and "Wild Survivor" passives began to tingle. His intuition, in the wild, translated the beast's intent with a startling clarity.

(A.... challenge?)

Naruto's eyes widened. ( And what the hell do you mean, you "won't lose again"?)

Naruto stopped looking at the bear as a threat and started looking at it as an individual. shifting his gaze From Bear's Legs , paws and torso , Naruto focused on the beast's head, squinting through the moonlight.

And there they were. Faint, jagged scars running across its forehead. And one eye..... milk-white and useless .

( Hmm , ....this Bear .....wait ?? )

The memories came rushing back, unbidden and vivid. A riverbank. The sound of rushing water. A much younger, smaller version of himself fighting for his life against a Bear .

"You're the bear..." Naruto whispered, an absurd expression touching his lips. "From three years ago.... At the Naka River."

*ROARRR!*

The bear huffed, its single good eye locking onto Naruto's with an intensity that was almost human.

Realization washed over Naruto. The bear was massive now, easily triple the size it had been back then. Its body was a map of scars from three years of surviving the Forest of Death, but those marks on its face—the ones Naruto had put there with a well-placed shuriken and a desperate calculation —were still there.

He remembered blinding the creature and knocking it off a Tree , thinking there was no way it could survive. But then the Bear stood up , broke the Ninja wires and then went away limping .

( Damn to think we will meet again.....But How does a normal animal hit Jonin-level in just three years? What have you been eating,?... Standard forest predators don't turn into kaiju this fast.)

*ROAR*

The bear let out a short, sharp bark of a roar. Its battle intent was radiating off it in waves, but it wasn't the messy, chaotic bloodlust of a wild animal. It was focused. Honest.

Naruto looked at the beast, his thoughts of retreating slowly dissolving.

(Challenging me..... fair and square. No traps, no hidden agendas. Just you and me.) He felt a pang of something complicated in his chest.

(Just what kind of impression did I leave on you all those years ago?)

The bear's eyes were so full of innocent, singular purpose. It didn't care about the Chunin Exams, or Orochimaru, or village politics or Any Manipulations , It just wanted to settle the score with the human who had changed its life and defeated him three years ago.

( *Sigh*.. I really am a sucker for this kind of stuff. Heartfelt honesty and pure stupidity )

Shaking his head Naruto sighed , The plan to run was gone. He had the Hiraishin; he could leave whenever he wanted, but looking at the "straight" feelings of this beast, something inside Naruto started to burn. If this were a shinobi looking for glory or other stupidity , he would've walked away.

But this? This was personal. This was different And

( Animals .....are so pure & Stupid......or Is this Youth )

Naruto adjusted his stance, ignoring the ache in his ribs and the stiffness in his legs. He gave the bear a sharp, grin.

"You really are One stupid bear ?" He putted the kunai back in his pouch , raising his fist as it glinted in moonlight. "Alright then. Let's finish this properly.."

Naruto locks eyes with the bear. Neither moves. The tension builds until the bear charges first, forcing Naruto into pure instinctive defense.

" It's a duel then... Man on Man "

Somehow the message was understood as the bear swiped His hand against Naruto , If it was the previous Naruto , he would have used Substitution Jutsu or any other way to dodge and then Counter but Now

Naruto widened his stance, dropping his center of gravity. His left arm was practically dead weight, his chest was sewn shut with fragile medical thread, and his legs felt like they were made of lead , but a feral grin stretched across his face anyway.

Naruto didn't dodge. He pushed every ounce of available chakra into his functioning right arm, the air whistling around his knuckles.

[Monster Punch!]

BOOM!

Fist met massive paw in a dead-center collision. The shockwave visibly warped the air, blasting the surrounding bushes flat and kicking up a cloud of debris. The sheer kinetic force of the impact forced both combatants to skid backward, the ground tearing under their feet.

But Naruto didn't stay still. Using the recoil of his backward step, he instantly shifted his weight, pivoting hard to approach the bear's blind flank.

Swoosh!

But A massive, fur-covered shadow suddenly eclipsed the moon. A backhanded paw was already sweeping toward his face with terrifying velocity.

( Fast!) Naruto contorted his spine, rotating mid-air to avoid decapitation. He swung his right leg up, his heel crashing into the underside of the bear's forearm.

BOOM!

The kick redirected the massive paw upward, sending it crashing through the thick canopy above. Hitting the ground, Naruto instantly dashed toward the bear's exposed hind legs, intending to shatter a knee.

But before he could even plant his foot, the bear—a creature weighing several tons—did the impossible. It planted its front paws and vaulted into the air, performing a flawless, acrobatic backward leap to put distance between them.

Naruto almost stopped fighting to rub his eyes. Did he just hallucinate?

( Those senses... and now this? Didn't Karin say this thing wasn't agile? ...Or was it just toying with them earlier? .....)

Naruto surged upward, channeling chakra into his soles to ricochet between the towering trunks of the red pines. He moved like a pinball, testing his vertical mobility, trying to find an angle.

Below him, the bear didn't bother climbing the trees. It dropped its head and charged straight through the forest like a runaway siege engine. Trunks thicker than a house shattered into splinters as the bear plowed through them, the ground shaking with every step.

( Damn what strength )

Instead of bracing for a block, Naruto started using rapid footwork, dropping from the canopy and weaving through the falling timber and analysing the beast with his senses .

(Hmm, so that's how it is... The bear's straight-line charge is incredibly fast, but it's only truly agile when you step into its immediate Strike zone. As for its base speed, it's about Chunin-level.....But It's the sheer mass that makes it overwhelming.)

Finding a microscopic opening in the beast's swinging frenzy, Naruto slipped inside its guard. He twisted his hips, throwing a brutal, chakra-laced punch straight into the bear's jaw.

THUD!

The bear's head snapped to the side, but Naruto hissed in pain. His knuckles felt like they had just struck solid titanium.

( Hard )

The impact barely fazed the beast, and before Naruto could retract his arm, the bear retaliated.

Five razor-sharp claws ripped through the air. Naruto hastily mooved back, but the claws sheared right through front of his shirt, leaving shallow, bleeding tracks across his chest.

( Timing is way more important here ..... and This Bear's raw defense and reactions ) Naruto realized, leaping backward.

(Damn. If I could just use my breathing techniques, I could overpower it with pure physical strength. But right now...)

He stepped in again, attempting to match a downward swipe with a rising fist. The moment they connected, Naruto's knees buckled under the crushing weight and force that was carrying the momentum with it , He was instantly overpowered, thrown backward into the mud.

( Damn , I just wanted a muscular and manly fight but it seems like .....I should Stop trying to muscle a mountain.....let's Calm down. Think.)

Seeing Naruto distance himself, the bear dropped on all fours and initiated another terrifying, straight-line charge.

This time, Naruto didn't back away. He waited until the absolute last millisecond. As the bear became a blur of fur and fangs, Naruto sidestepped, dropping low to the ground. He slid entirely under the creature's massive sweeping arm, planted his feet, and exploded upward, slamming his Monster Chakra -enhanced shoulder directly into the bear's exposed ribs.

CRACK!

The bear slid sideways, growling in discomfort, but didn't go down.

(Dude I heard a crack ....why ain't you going down )

Naruto tried backed off, taking a moment to sync his normal breathing.

But as he Tried to moved in for another strike, the bear stumbling did something entirely unexpected. It didn't swipe. It swung both massive arms wide, enclosing Naruto in a lethal cage of muscle and bone.

The paws came together like massive steel doors—a point-blank clap with Naruto caught dead in the center. There was no time to duck.

( Wha----)

Gritting his teeth, Naruto was forced to do the one thing he was trying to avoid. He threw both arms outward—including his shattered left shoulder.

BANG!

He caught the crushing paws with his palms, his muscles screaming, his bones bowing under the sheer, hydraulic pressure of the beast's clap. He had to reinforce his entire body just to keep from being instantly pulverized. Agony flared through his chest as his sutures tore open, hot blood spilling down his stomach.

(Get off!)

Using the momentary stalemate, Naruto focused on the flickering Hiraishin seal he had left on a nearby tree.

*Blink!*

He vanished from the crush, reappearing ten meters away. He fell to one knee, coughing violently, clutching his left side. The escape had cost him; his chest and shoulder were severely reinjured, the muscles screaming in protest. If not for Hiraishin , He would have ended there , after all His Monster Punch Taijutsu was only Level 4

( ALL Right..... A Man fights with everything , let's stop acting like some Reckless-blood pumping Protaganist )

Naruto tried to breath , He couldn't use the high-pressure lung techniques, but he could still regulate his standard chakra flow, improving his stamina and reaction time without bursting his stitches.

The bear didn't pause to wonder where naruto went. It spun, locating him and charging towards him instantly, and unleashed a flurry of rapid-fire swipes.

Naruto couldn't block anymore. He relied entirely on sudden, violent bursts of chakra to the soles of his feet, narrowly blasting himself backward and sideways just millimeters ahead of the lethal claws.

Naruto griited his Teeeth and did the hand-signs , and slammed them on ground on the first opening

[Earth Release : Earth Flow River ]

The solid earth beneath the bear instantly liquefied into deep, clinging mud. The beast's movements bogged down, the fight shifting from a battle of speed to a deadly game of timing.

(Attacking from the front is suicide. I need its blind spots.) Naruto circled to the bear's rear, launching a strike toward its hamstrings. But the beast's wild instincts were too sharp; it tracked him without even looking

*Boom*

The Punch Connected , but something strange happened , The Bear pivoted and Using Naruto's punch's force and his own leg's reaction , The Bear Rotated his whole body , it used the slippary mud to turn around on one leg like a top , and then came face to face with Naruto in an instant

( Huh ??? )

the bear reared back its head and unleashed a point-blank roar.

*ROARRRRRRRR!*

It wasn't just loud; it was a physical shockwave of compressed air and wild chakra. The sound hit Naruto like a physical wall, completely disrupting his focus. His chakra network flared and stuttered, and a wave of intense dizziness washed over his brain.

His vision swam and For a split second, his guard dropped.

The bear didn't miss. using the momentum of falling dowen , A massive, fur-covered fist slammed squarely into Naruto's battered chest.

[ Earth release : Rock Armor ]

Bones groaned. Naruto was launched through the air like a cannonball, . But even through the dizziness and the agonizing pain, his battle instincts fired , It was only thanks to his MindHub skill That he kept calm but even then It was dangerous .

( ...Did this Bear Trained in circus or something ?? )

Using Halo eyes , MIndHUb and other skills ,Naruto regained his calm as he saw himself flying backward toward a jagged rock outcropping .

Just before his spine could snap against the stone, he inhaled deeply through the pain and blew out a burst of wind chakra from his mouth—[Wind Breakthrough]—using the recoil to rapidly decelerate his body. He hit the rock hard, coughing up a wad of blood, but he hadn't broken any ribs or bones thanks to the Rock armor . Still, the impact of the paw had rattled his organs.

Naruto slowly pushed himself off the rock, his armor crumbling , His breath was ragged. His body was reaching its limit. He looked at the bear. It was panting heavily, its stamina finally waning under the constant movement and the heavy mud.

( Alright .... Let's see who breaks first.)

Naruto's eyes went cold. The playful, testing demeanor vanished. He activated his [Lone Wolf] passive skill and

[ Hyper Reflexes ]

The world slowed down. The chaotic movements of the bear distilled into predictable lines of force and intention.

He stopped aiming for the body and started targeting the architecture.

Naruto pushed off the rock, abandoning all defense. He engaged his [Level 7 Dynamic Vision], his eyes tracking the microscopic twitches in the bear's muscles. He stepped into the beast's guard, weaving through a flurry of swipes without a millimeter to spare.

He unleashed a close-range barrage, but every single punch was calculated.

Crack! A knuckle to the left kneecap.

Thud! A palm strike to the right elbow joint.

Smack! A precise kick to the base of the neck.

He used the muddy terrain to trap the bear's feet, limiting its movement, while he abused his Chakra Burst Flicker to warp around the beast, completely disregarding the searing pain in his own overtaxed legs. He was dismantling the bear's mobility piece by piece.

Slowly, the massive beast grew stiff and wobbled . Its strikes lost their snap. Its legs trembled under its own immense weight.

( It's over )

Just as Naruto decided to deal the finishing blow , The Beast shifted

*ROARRRRRR*

Knowing it was losing its mobility, the bear dropped onto all fours. The air around it suddenly grew heavy. The faint shimmer of chakra on its fur exploded into a visible, roaring aura of dense, wild energy. The earth beneath its paws cracked under the pressure.

( .....THis Beast ...with his senses , he should have understood the difference by now ...Isn't it natural for animals to run by now ?? )

Naruto felt the shift. He stopped moving. The Bear stood ten paces away, his chest heaving, blood dripping from his chin and Body , It was pooling every last drop of its energy into a final, suicidal reinforcement Charge

( A cornered Beast is the most Dangerous .....was what they say )

Naruto took a slow, deep breath, forcing his raging heart to calm ,He raised his functioning right hand.

Chakra swirled, violent and blue, condensing rapidly in his palm. It didn't just form a sphere; it expanded, feeding on his exhaustion and responding to the Bear's Unyielding will, growing into a massive, shrieking orb of pure destruction.

[Odama Rasengan!]

The Bear watched The swirling Ball of destruction , full of chakra and the menacing rotation , All the beast's senses screamed about the danger , His brain telling it to run . BUT

* ROAAAAARRRRRR *

The Bear let out one final, earth-shattering roar and charged . In an Instant The Bear was in front of Naruto , But It didn't swing its claws. It tucked its head and threw its entire, chakra-reinforced mass into a devastating shoulder tackle, moving at a speed that defied physics.

( COME ..!! )

Naruto didn't dodge. He planted his feet, screaming through the pain, and thrust the Odama Rasengan forward to meet the mountain of fur and muscle head-on.

*BOOOOOOOOOOM....!*

The collision was apocalyptic. A dome of displaced air and chakra erupted from the epicenter, instantly vaporizing the mud and snapping the surrounding trees cleanly in half.

The stalemate lasted for two agonizing seconds.

Then, the kinetic energy backfired from the collision.

Naruto's right shoulder dislocated with a sickening pop. The muscles in his arm literally burst from the strain, blood spraying into the air as the sheer force of the bear's tackle threw him backward. He tumbled wildly across the ruined earth, finally coming to a stop in a broken heap, his right arm throbbing in pain.

( What a pain .... I hope This will be last time I am swayed by my emotions )

But the bear fared worse.

The Odama Rasengan ground through its reinforced Hide , The internal destruction of the spiraling chakra ripped through the beast's shoulder and back, shattering its already weakened joints. The massive grizzly was thrown through the air, crashing down hard enough to leave a crater.

Silence descended on the destroyed clearing.

For a long time, nothing moved.

Then, slowly, agonizingly, Naruto shifted. He dragged himself up, his left arm useless from the surgery, his right arm dislocated and bleeding profusely. He practically dragged his feet across the dirt, limping toward the crater.

The bear lay on its side. It was breathing—shallow, wet breaths—but it couldn't move. Its single good eye tracked Naruto as he approached,The Beast was waiting for Death , tired but devoid of fear

" Why ...!!! Why not run away ?? "

Naruto stopped right in front of the beast's massive snout. He looked down at the creature that had pushed him to the brink of death , First time in his life , A feeling that not even Orochimaru gave.

Naruto saw the scars from three years ago, and the new wounds from tonight.

And then he heard a whimper or a roar or a Growl , but with his senses Naruto got the meaning

*growl*

( I won't run .......NOT AGAIN ...!!! )

Hearing this response, Naruto fell silent ,He didn't gloat of his victory , afterall If Naruto wanted to win there were plenty of options to finish this fight easily , shadow clones , rasengan , chidori , destructo disc and many more .

Naruto looked at the beast silently . and after a while , He slowly lowered himself, sitting cross-legged in the dirt next to the bear's head. He reached out with his trembling, blood-soaked right hand, ignoring the agony in his shoulder, and gently rested his palm against the thick fur of the beast's forehead.

A bloody, exhausted grin spread across his face as He spoke

" Be my son."

Author's note :

At first I wanted to introduce Grass Nin , Gaara or even Orochimaru , because of Karin's Uzumaki physique .

But then I changed to this bear , As you see , Naruto was not going all out and was taking the fight light-heartedly .

Andthen he got careless and got injured in his arrogance , without hiraishin he would have become meat-paste even .

The chapter was just to show that Naruto is not some cold-blooded machine and can also make mistakes.

whether it's forgetting healing the legs , over-confidence in his strength , underestimation of others who he deemed weak and many other things .

A character Development For Our MC .

Personally , after reading this chapter , I felt a little lackluster compared to others though . Like a forced plot or something?
